Expanded MLB

If you were to expand MLB by adding two teams. To level them of at 16 teams each. What would be ideal settings for expansion to try to resemble real life. I know it cant be perfect....thought I would ask.

Number of Rounds?
Number of Protected Players for each team (traditional teams)?
Auto-Protect players less the "x" pro service years?
Limit on Picks from a Single Team?

I've been struggling with this same thing!! Here's where I am so far:

Limit to 3 players drafted per team, so 45 rounds.

Limit to the default of 2 of more yrs. In the past few expansion drafts, players drafted in the prior 2 years were not eligible.

Protect 21. This is the one i've been struggling with. If you protect 21, each team loses their 22st - 24th best player. In the 1992 / 1997 expansion drafts, each team has protected 15. then after each round, you can pull 3 more back. So, theoretically, each team lost their 16th, 20th and 24th best players. in real life, 1 player was chosen per team per round, then the teams got to regroup and pull 3 more back, so the teams could do a little more to protect themselves. So, I think losing players 22, 23 and 24 in the game, is close enough to losing 16, 20 and 24 in real life.

What would be nice, and I dont' have time for, would be to test it. In 1998, tampa won 63, AZ won 65. In 1993, FLA won 64, Colorado won 67. So, the avg is 65. It would be great to test samples of PC drafts with different protection levels to see how many games are won year 1, but you'd have sim 10+ seasons at each draft scenerio, and I just don't have time / don't care that much!

Similar to the 1992 expansion draft, both expansion teams selected 35 players.[4] The draft was divided into three rounds. Each team would select 14 players in round 1, 14 players in round 2, and 7 players in round 3. Tampa Bay general manager Chuck LaMar and Arizona general manager Joe Garagiola, Jr. oversaw their teams' selections.
The Devil Rays and Diamondbacks could pick any player not on the protected lists of the 28 other teams, although no team could lose more than one player in a given round. The protected list for each team consisted of:
  • For the first round, 15 players from the rosters of their entire organization—both their 40-man roster, plus all minor league affiliates.[4]
  • Each team could add three more players to its protected list after each round.[4]
  • In addition to the above, players chosen in the 1996 and 1997 amateur drafts were automatically protected, plus players who were 18 or younger when signed in 1995.
  • Players who were free agents after the end of the 1997 season need not be protected.
As with the 1992 expansion draft, the order was determined by a coin toss. The winner of the toss could choose either: (a) The first overall pick in the expansion draft or (b) allow the other team to pick first and receive both the second and third overall expansion draft picks and the right to pick first in the subsequent rounds of the expansion draft. Tampa Bay won the toss and chose to select first.
It would be better to check 1997 expasion draft. 3 rounds, 14-14-7 players.

I have to take a close look at it, but how about 15-15-8 players in 3 rounds?

You cant do that in the game. The expansion draft aint set up that way with 3 rounds. So we were trying to find the right numbers to make the expansion teams first year record similar to what they were in the two previous expansions in MLB. Also I think I got a decent center of numbers. I was able to tweak your settings (chriskelly) and they are:

Number of Protected Players for each team (traditional teams)? 23 Players
Auto-Protect players less the "x" pro service years? 3 Years
Limit on Picks from a Single Team? 4 picks per team (60 picks)

produced these records for the first year for both teams: 62-100 and 68-94.

I haven't messed with the settings in 13 yet, but based on prior experience I suggest that if you're concerned with having the expansion team(s) be immediately better, don't let the existing teams protect as many players. If you want to be really hardcore I imagine you could limit the protected list to 4 or 5 players.

couldn't you draft for both teams and that way keep it close to real life?

yea i could but im setting it up to be an online league. So two people will be drafting and 30 other teams have to submit a protection list. So wanting it to be close to real as possible so its fair for teams on both sides of the draft.
