Washed Up Superstar/Fan Favorite?
At what point do you just let a former superstar a long time favorite walk at free agency or even bench him?
He continually asks for much more money than we he is worth...He has not had a very productive season in a few years and seemingly refuses to retire. I sometimes feel obligated to keep them around if I originally drafted them and even start them. |

When you figure out this answer please email it to Jim Leyland and Dave Dombrowski.

lol I have always thought DJ was overrated/overpriced simply bc he plays in NY...( I am a Braves fan)
![]() I was just curious how others handled these situations. I hate not signing them and them finishing their career with another team. I guess I am an old timer(despite being 26) in that I like to see players stick with one team throughout their career. I am glad Chipper stuck with the Braves

After the contract he still didnt retire...he potential and ratings were horrendous. I figured if I released him he would eventually retire but another team signed him lol... |

at least he is producing still...It is just hard when you have a former stud now washed up....and you have another star in the making in the minors waiting to be called up....
I guess that is what being a GM is all about... |

Draft location question
All,
I am getting ready to do the amateur draft and I noticed I have 2 picks in the first round. Is there someplace that explains why you have those picks? I know one is because of position in last years schedule but no clue why I have another. BTW, I am playing with the 2012 CBA if that matters Thx, jonpfl |

You probably lost a Type A free agent and received another teams pick as compensation. |

Posada and Rivera both took me to the cleaners. Although FWIW I think Jeter-bashing has now jumped the shark, in general.

Experience has taught me to dump them mercilessly when they start to lose a step.

Thats what I end up doing...Around the time they reach 30, i start thinking about moving on without them and start actively seeking replacements either from the minors, drafts, or even possibly trading for a younger average guy to fill in temporarily until a long-term solution comes up through the farm

As a general rule, I don't sign players to extensions further than their 31st birthday. I save money, but I don't win very much.

I usually dont either...but i do get attached to some players...not a specific player type either...could be anyone from a leadoff man to a cleanup hitter...even the backup who filled in a season or two and did pretty good but in reality is not everyday starting material. lol

I have only done that for two players and they were McGuire and Chipper. Both retired and were my team's only HOFs.
I generally dump them at the first sign of decline, but there is always an exception to the rule. |

I only recognize numbers, not names. So that's how I play.

It all depends. I do whatever I can to keep them around as long as possible if they have high leadership skills. Especially if they are satisfied with their playing time. Brian Roberts flat out won the World Series for the Orioles when he was 38 and only had about 200 ABs during the season. He still didn't retire (I hate that) and I let him go.
