Todo's Major League Career

2012 Colorado Rockies

March 29, 2012

I have become the General Manager of the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies are a team with a short history that hasn’t really lead to a whole lot of success. Only 3 playoff appearances in nearly 2 decades just aren’t the signs of a great dynasty.

I take over the team after a 73-89 2011 season where the team had to worst team batting average in team history, claiming 4th place in the National League West Division.

The owner is a little crazy expecting us to make the playoffs this year, I will definitely have my work cut out for me as I just don’t think we have enough talent to get there. Arizona is probably the class of the division with Los Angeles, San Francisco and our Rockies are probably interchangeable from the 2nd to 4th place positions depending on which team can stay healthy and perform throughout the season. At the end of the division is San Diego who really lacks pitching talent, but could surprise offensively. Everyone in the division has holes though so it will be an interesting chase.
So now on to the introductions to the Staff and Players…

March 29, 2012 Extended (1) Scouting Director, Team Owner and Coaching Staff

First up is meeting with Bill Schmidt, my scouting director. He seems to be really good at what he does, with his strength being his eye for scouting Amateurs. He has no weaknesses. I have decided to cut back $800,000 on international scouting and split the $4 Million dollar budget evenly between Majors, Minors and Amateurs. We will continue to scout Japan and the Dominican Republic for foreign talent as well.

Scouting will definitely be important for us as we don’t have a huge budget. Ours is ranked 21st in the league, so we are in the bottom 3rd.

Next up was meeting with the Team’s Owner Charlie Monfort. He seems to be a penny-pincher, and won’t be very patient with me, he demands success right away. He explained that he wants this team in the playoffs this season, and that he was worried it wasn’t going to happen. I wanted to agree with him, but thought that would leave a bad first impression, so I gave him my plan for the team to get them to a competitive level. Mostly we need to upgrade our pitching staff without sacrificing too much of our offensive strength, since we don’t have a whole lot to give up.

Last up was a meeting with our coaching staff. Jim Tracy seems to be alright as a Manager. He is great at handling players, but lacks the ability to really train the team. Bench Coach Tom Runnells isn’t really anything special, but he will do for now. Bob Apodaca and Carney Lansford our Pitching and Hitting Coaches respectively seem solid choices. Lansford our Hitting coach really seems to be able to get through to the players and should be able to improve our offensive game. Team Trainer Keith Dugger is average at best at this level. He is outstanding with leg injuries, but otherwise he isn’t great.
We all felt the team had a weakness in the Starting Rotation as well as in the Bullpen. We need to find some better pitching talent. Our fielders are a solid group, but we could use an upgrade at 3rd base.

March 29, 2012 Extended (2) Starting Pitchers

1) Jeremy Guthrie – RHP, Age: 32, 9-17 4.33 ERA 130 k 66 BB
2) Jhoulys Chacin – RHP, Age: 24, 11-14 3.62 ERA 150 k 87 BB
3) Juan Nicasio – RHP, Age: 25, 4-4 4.14 ERA 58 k 18 BB
4) Drew Pomeranz – LHP, Age: 23, 2-1 5.40 ERA 13 k 5 BB
5) Jamie Moyer – LHP, Age: 49, None

We lack a true Ace pitcher for our rotation. In fact we lack a true #2 starter as well. Guthrie, Chacin and Nicasio have the talent to be middle to end of the rotation guys, while Pomeranz and Moyer are fringe starters at best, but hopefully they can hold down a spot for us and eat up some innings.

Other starters of note are Jorge de la Rosa, who will be out for the next couple of months injured, and probably isn’t good enough to unseat Moyer for the 5th spot, but he has a decent track record here in Colorado.

We also have Tyler Chatwood and Christian Friedrich in AAA, both are up and coming youngsters who I hope can develop into average starters for us.

March 29, 2012 Extended (3) Relief Pitchers

1) Matt Belisle– RHP, Age: 31, 10-4 3.25 ERA 58 k 14 BB
2) Rex Brothers – LHP, Age: 24, 1-2-1 2.88 ERA 59 k 20 BB
3) Guillermo Moscoso– RHP, Age: 28, 8-10 3.38 ERA 74 k 38 BB
4) Matt Reynolds– LHP, Age: 27, 1-2 4.09 ERA 50 k 18 BB
5) Josh Roenicke– RHP, Age: 29, 0-0 3.78 ERA 12 k 7 BB
6) Rafael Betancourt– RHP, Age: 36, 2-0-8 2.89 ERA 73 k 8 BB

Rafael has potential to be a great closer for us this season. He has all the tools to succeed. The rest of our bullpen is fairly average. We don’t have any superstars that we can count on. With all these guys we will see good outings and bad ones. It will be pretty inconsistent.

There aren’t any other options that I can really count on in AAA or elsewhere. I may have to watch the waiver wire and see if a decent arm shows up over the coming months to either improve our pen or add depth in AAA.

March 29, 2012 Extended (4) Infielders

1) Wilin Rosario – C, Age: 23, .204 3 HR 8 RBI .228 OBP
2) Ramon Hernandez– C, Age: 35, .282 12 HR 36 RBI .341 OBP
3) Todd Helton– 1B, Age: 38, .302 14 HR 69 RBI .385 OBP
4) Jason Giambi– 1B, Age: 41, .260 13 HR 32 RBI .355 OBP
5) Marco Scutaro– 2B, Age: 36, .299 7 HR 54 RBI .358 OBP
6) Brendan Harris– 2B, Age: 31, None
7) Chris Nelson– 3B, Age: 26, .250 4 HR 16 RBI .280 OBP
8) Jonathan Herrera– SS, Age: 27, .242 3 HR 14 RBI .313 OBP
9) Troy Tulowitzki– SS, Age: 27, .302 30 HR 105 RBI .372 OBP

Our teams offensive leader is Tulowitzki at the Short Stop position. The guy has developed into a star player that we will definitely build the team around. Ramon is a good hitter and Rosario is young guy who with a little more development could become a great Catcher, hopefully this season will see Rosario come into his own and take over the starting catcher role, until then Ramon gets the nod. The Helton-Giambi combo would have been killer 10 years ago, now they still both have some solid bats that will be useful to produce some offense for the team. Scutaro isn’t a long term solution at 2B and Nelson just isn’t good enough for the starting nod full time at 3B, but with no other option we will have to let due for now.

In AAA we have 1B Chad Tracy who could fill in ok, but with Helton and Giambi, chances are pretty low that he will see the Majors this season. Nobody else really seems ready for the jump to the big leagues this season.

March 29, 2012 Extended (5) Outfielders

1) Carlos Gonzales– LF, Age: 26, .295 26 HR 92 RBI .363 OBP
2) Dexter Fowler– CF, Age: 26, .266 5 HR 45 RBI .363 OBP
3) Michael Cuddyer– RF, Age: 33, .284 20 HR 70 RBI .346 OBP
4) Tyler Colvin– RF, Age: 26, .150 6 HR 20 RBI .204 OBP
5) Eric Young Jr. – RF, Age: 26, .247 0 HR 10 RBI .342 OBP

Gonzales is a great hitter, Cuddyer can bring some offense and Fowler gets on base, and brings great speed. Young is a borderling backup and Colvin seems fairly useless, but he is all we really have.

We have Charlie Blackmon will be a decent replacement in a pinch when he gets back from injury in a few weeks. Our AAA team continues to be fairly useless, there isn’t much to choose from to bring up to the majors this season.
