Your idea to organize the two Texas teams into one is great. I think Tony Gwynn on the Angels fits really well too.

As a Cardinals fan, I have to nit-pick your choice of Andujar over Bob Forsch. However, you are right on to put Brock in CF given the corner outfield choices. I always used Slaughter in right and Musial in left, but getting Medwick into the lineup is a good call to give them another RH bat. **

I have derailed your thread enough, but I will be reading.

** EDIT: It just dawned on me that these were probably the AI's choices and not yours. Still interesting.
You are not derailing my threat by any means! Comments by everyone makes it more fun and keeps it fresh for everyone.

I am making slight changes as I go along like adding Joe Wood and Eddie Plank to rotations because of days of old. Also if anyone is really struggling I am trying to make the changes.

I remember and loved Tony LaRussa baseball!

BOSTON A SIGHT TO SEE

The Boston Red Sox are hitting the baseball in a league with elite pitching better then anyone could have imagined. The offensive explosion has come at the hands of the KC Royals at Royal Stadium berating the confidence of the hopeful Royals.

Doerr is batting .520 this season

To be more specific the Red Sox have scored 44 runs in three games with an incredible 58 hits. Boston is batting .353 as a team and is leading in almost every offensive catagories. Bobby Doerr is leading the way batting .520 so far this young season. Anyone who may have thought that Boston did not have the lineup to match the Yankees may be very mistaken.

For the Royals they still have to face the Sox again on Sunday.

Feller Blanks Twins

Bob Feller won his second game in as many starts with his effort at Progressive Field against Minnesota. Feller went the distance and beat Bert Blylaven 3-0. Rapid Robert struck out nine men and was in control from start to finish.

The Indians offense on the other hand isnt hitting the ball very well with the likes of Manny Ramirez hitting .111. Cleveland in last in the AL in hitting at .232.

Plank The Man For Mack

Athletics manager Connie Mack doesnt wait very long to make changes to his team. Mack made a change in the first week of the season by bringing forward starter Eddie Plank as an addition to the rotation.

Plank won over 300 games in his career and will be replacing Vid Blue in the rotaion who was rocked in his first start this season in a loss.

The Athletics are also trying to play through a big injury to another Mack favorite in Home Run Baker who is out 2 months with a fractured fibula. The A's are 3-3 to start the season.

Players of the Week and Power Rankings

The American League player of the week comes of course from the team that has been smoking the baseball and enjoyed a clean sweep of the KC Royals this weekend. Bobby Doerr of the Red Sox batted .517 for the week and drove in 8 runs while scoring six. Doerr also played a steady second base and has benefited greatly from the Boston hitters around them.

The Red Sox are batting .354 as a team and still havent played a game at Fenway Park in front of their home fans. Doerr is one of many stars in the lineup including two other players batting over .400, and none of them are named Ted Williams who is batting a modest .346.

Rose Looks Fresh

Few players had more to prove then the competitor that is Pete Rose. Rose started the Cooperstown league in the most prolific of ways hitting everything in site to top the league with a .524 average and the player of the week award in the National League.

Rose has stole a base and scored five runs while taking the role at first base well and leading his team any way he can. As the a team the Reds have only won 2 of 6 games but Charlie Hustle has no intention of slowing down.

Rose appears to be determined to show that he is the hits leader for a reason.

Angels Mean Business

To start the Cooperstown league many were questioning if the LA Angels had the horses to compete at this level. Manager Mike Scioscia however took the task as a challange and had his roster and team ready for the fight.

The Angels won five of their first seven games this week including a weekend sweep of the Cubs that showed they can win the close ones. With Reggie Jackson and Tony Gwynn the stars of the roster, the Angels have been getting contributions from many to start off hot on top of the NL West.

On Monday it was Troy Glaus who hit two towering home runs to keep the Angels in the game against the Pirates. It all lead to the bottom of the ninth when Jackson took a Deacon Phillipe pitch out of the yard with a man on for the walk off win. Reggie's first home run of the season could not have come at a better time and the Angels are forcing many to take notice.

Royals In A Struggle

On the other end of the spectrum the Kansas City Royals and manager Dick Howser are looking for a break. The Royals have the worst record in the league after about a week and have lost their last six ballgames, five of those at home.

The Royals were embarassed and battered by the Red Sox over the weekend and today took a swing from the Texas All Stars who beat them 6-4. The pitching staff has an unbelievable ERA of 11.02 and the confidence level of everyone on the team is fading fast.

This time it was Juan Gonzalez who homered to break a tie game and keep the Texans in control to win the opener of their series.

"Our confidence is simply lacking right now" says ace Bret Saberhagen, "we have alot to prove still and to have a slump right out of the gate isnt the worst time to have it with so many games left."

Still changes in the rotation may be coming very early.

Top performer of the day:

Wade Boggs BOS - 4-5, 2 2B, HR, 5 RBI

Manny Breaks Slump In Big Way

The Indians depend on the middle of their order to surge their teams. Going into their game against the Blue Jays on Tursday night Manny Ramirez only had two RBI and no home runs. Ramirez had already started to feel some of the pressure of his inability to get going. On this night however Manny was being Manny and showed the league and his team why he always seems to be near the center of attention.

Ramirez hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the Indians ran away from the Blue Jays in an 8-4 win. He did it all against Roy Halladay who is no easy target, the Tribe hopes this is the emergence of a hot Ramirez which the team needs as they have started strong on top of the AL Central.

"Did you really think Manny wouldnt start to hit?" said manager Lou Boudreau about his slugger.

Verlander Looking For Respect

The Detroit Tigers have a number of strong arms to go to but Jim Leyland knows Justin Verlander very well. In his first two starts the right hander had a mixed bag of results and some were calling for the insertion of Mickey Lolich to the staff. Verlander did have the answer however as he took the mound against the Twins.

Verlander threw with confidence and left the game with only one out remaining in the 9th. Verlander struck out five and only walked two as his team took home a 4-0 win at Tiger Stadium. Verlander now has gained the confidence of some of his mates who are less patient with poor performances, players like team leader Ty Cobb who is batting .353. The real hitting star of the team has been Allen Trammell however who is off to a .438 start.

Willie Hernandez notched his third save of the season and the Tigers sit with a 5-4 record behing the Indians.

Ibanez And Mariners Embarrass Yankees

The Seattle Mariners walked into Yankee Stadium with a swagger and played like it as they put away the big favorites. The Yankees have been having pitching issues thus far this season which is making many wonder if they are the lock to win it all that everyone thought they were.

Ibanez 4-5 HR 4 RBI

Ron Guidry didnt have much of anything coming out of his lighting arm and the Mariners made him pay. Seattle cracked 17 hits and scored 14 runs to overwhelm the home team and send the home team home with a taste of their own medice. The game as a whole saw seven home runs hit, four of them hit by the Mariners.

Raul Ibanez went 4-5 in the win with 4 RBI and a long home run. Young Felix Hernandez didnt have his best stuff but was carried by his offense and won his first game of the season.

Pitchers are finding out quickly in the Cooperstown lerague that if you dont have your best stuff on any given day, the results could be disasterous.

Four Run 9th Inning Carries Tigers

The Detroit Tigers appeared headed for defeat as they trailed the Minnesota Twins and Bert Blyleven 4-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Blyleven gave in to Joe Nathan in the inning but a triple by Hank Greenberg scored the first Tiger run to cut the lead to one.

Al Kaline drew a walk and up came Darrell Evans with no men out. Evans has had some trouble getting atbats in the Detroit lineup and wants to make the most of all of his chances. Evans loves the short porches in right field of Tiger Stadium and took advantage. Evans lofted a fastball over that short porch that plated three men and ended the game.

The Twins dropped their heads and their record as now the club 3-6 and has some serious issues in their bullpen. As for Evans, he can only hope that Jim Leyland is taking notice and will give him more of a shot in the everyday Tiger lineup.

Pedro Dazzles

In the early spring air of Arlington, Pedro Martinez made his statement as the ace of the Boston Red Sox and anyother team for that matter. Pedro was electric tonight against the Texas All Stars and threw a two hit shutout in a tight 1-0 win.

Kevin Brown was strong as well for the All Stars but Pedro had something extra in this game and was in the groove of dominance. Martinez had been knocked around a bit in his first two starts making some speculate if his focus was where it needed to be; where his mind was became unimportant as it became evenident where his arm is.

Tris Speaker scored the only run of the game on a bases loaded walk as the Red Sox offence for one of the few times this young season was held down. Boston still leads the league in average at .308.

Manager Terry Francona loved what he saw, "I hope people now once and for all realize what he can do."

Cardinals Set Early Pace

The St. Louis Cardinals, lead by Rogers Hornsby, held off the Washington Nationals 9-6 to give them the temporary best record in the league. The Cardinals have won 8 of their first 11 games showing that their team is deep both with the bats and the gloves.

Stan Musial is batting .444 so far this season and Bob Gibson has his ERA right where he wants it at 2.05. Lou Brok has stolen six bases at the top of the order and the team average of .302 is best in the National League.

Hornsby drove in three runs on a day when John Tudor was not at his strongest but still kept his record perfect with another win at 3-0.

Notable Injuries

Tim Wallach of the Nationals will miss some time with an undisclosed injury while Pat Borders of the Blue Jays had a collision at the plate and hurt his knee.

Borders will miss 2-3 weeks of time leaving the catching duties of the 4-7 Jays to Ernie Whitt.

Barry Bonds Lights Up Phillies

It took about ten days, but Barry Bonds showed what everyone expects from him for the first time this Friday in Philadelphia. Bonds was a nightmare for the Phillies and drove in six runs to back a 10-5 Giants win. In a single game Bonds took the RBI lead for the team with 13 and has put some life into a team that has only started 5-6 for John McGraw this season.

Bonds hit a grand slam in the fourth inning off Phillies starter Robin Roberts. The left fielder would also drive in two more runs with two more RBI singles to end his night 3-4. Willie Mays behind Bonds scored four runs and was on base at everstep as the two big bats in the lineup looked like everyone expects them to.

Tim Lincecum won hi firt game of the season while Roberst took the loss and is one of may pitchers who are seeing their ERA's soar as hitting is the trend so far this season.

Ripken First Man to 20 RBI

Cal Ripken Jr has gotten off to the start that has many taking notice as the Baltimore short stop drove in another two runs on Friday in Kansas City and is the first player to get to 20 RBI's this season. Ripken has accumulated the total in only 12 games and even more impressive has been the fact that he has done it mostly as the leadoff man of the team.

"Im just making the most of the opportunities in front of me" said Ripken, "we have such a deep lineup that it seems there are men on the pond everytime I come up there."

Ripken is batting a ridiculus .727 with men in scoring position having come through 8 out of 11 at bats. Ripken seems to be making a strong statement that he is the best of the best at short stop and talk of the likes of Honus Wagner and Derek Jeter cant hold a candle up to him thus far.

Where's Chase Utley on the Phillies? How did you get the photos - they look really good -- part of the Quickstart or Template?

Chase Utley is doing just fine as the starting second baseman for the Phillies. Here is his stat line:

12 AB 16 H 2 2B 2 3B 1 HR 5 RBI 1 BB 10 K .356 AVG .383 OBP 1 SB

Also this game can be set up from OOTP 12 quickstart, everything you need is there to start and then I made my own customizations from there. The photos are also from the historical facegen project that is on the OOTP add on.

Thanks for following.

23 Inning Marathon In DC One To Remember

Some games stick to the memory more then others but few could even remember by the time the game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Washington Nationals was over when it had started. The game in Nationals ballpark was a total of 23 innings and took 8 hours and 15 minutes if you couple it with a rain delay. Over 8 hours of baseball lead to less drama then one would have thought, as the Cardinals scored 9 runs in the 23rd and put this marathon game away.

In the game Lou Brock and Johnny Mize came to the plate 12 times while 15 pitchers were used in the game. The game started with a heck of a pitching matchup as Walter Johnson took on Bob Gibson. Gibson seemed to have the edge but Bruce Sutter blew the save late and the game went into extra innings tied at 4. The game also had 10 total errors, eight of them by the home team with Al Oliver setting a record with five errors of his own.

Rogers Hornsby drove in four runs including two in the winning inning while the Cardinal bullpen did a great job with Ryan Franklin going almost four innings and getting the win.

The Cardinals remain in first place in the NL Central while the Nationals drop to one game under .500.

Deer Lifts Brewers

Rob Deer of the Milwaukee Brewers may be known best for his consistency of striking out. At Wrigley Field however tonight the big slugger came through in a big way in the clutch to help the Brewers get off the mat and beat the Cubs in extra innings.

Deer 2 clutch HR's

The Brewers were down a run and had Don Sutton on the hook for a loss while facing Lee Smith. Smith however went away to Deer who took the pitch the other way and tied the game in the 9th inning. The game would stay tied until the 11th when Charlie Root came on for the Cubs. Deer this time crucshed one over the bleachers in left and his two late homers were the difference. Root has a tendency of allowing big home runs.

The Brewers have won two in a row and now are only one game under .500 and two games behind the Angles in the NL West. As for Deer his playing time has been limited but he may see much more action now, especially late in ballgames again power pitchers.

Aaron Wows The Sunday League

Hammerin Hank Aaron wasnt off to the best of starts to the season and had many wondering if the calm slugger would get hot in time to help the Braves beat their inconsistency. On this calm Sunday afternoon at Angels stadium the superstar broke through in only the way he can with three long home runs in an 8-3 Braves win.

Hank went 3-4 and homered in three straight at bats, two of them coming off of Angels loser Frank Tanana, to open up a lead that Greg Maddux would not relent. Maddux finally won his first game of the season and got the support he hasnt seen in his previous starts.

"I never try to hit the ball out of the park" said Aaron of his big day, "rather when you make solid contact good things like this happen."

Aaron drove in four runs and now has five home runs on the season and has upped his average to .308. The Braves are actually in first place in the NL East with only a 7-6 record. The entire division in fact has seven wins to their name in what is a very intense and even race.

If Hank gets hot however, look for the Braves to rack up the wins much more quickly.

Hernndez And Bonilla Save Mets

The Mets had a hard fight on their hands against Bob Friend and the Pirates. Chase field saw a back and forth game as Doc Gooden looked to avoid his first loss of the season.

Things looked bleak for the Mets however as they were down a run in the 8th inning when Keith Hernandez came through with a home run that jsut cleared the fence, his third of the season, to give the Mets a tie.

The Pirates retook the lead however in the top of the ninth and Kent Tekulve came on in the bottom of the frame to close things out. Jeff Kent however drew a walk and up came Bobby Bonilla who has been fighting for playing time. Bonilla was not fooled by the side arm delivery of Tekulve and got hold of one that was destined to leave the park the moment he hit it. The home run gave New York a dramatic walk off win and keeps their record at .500 with a 7-7 record.

For Tekulve this is the third blown save he has suffered in the young season and many are wondering if he can handle the job. Unfortunately for Chuck Tanner and the Pirates there is little help in the bullpen as the franchise hasnt been know for having dominant closers.

The Met always seem to be a team of momentum and there seems to be some of that old magic back for the queen team of New York.

Babe Saves Yankees

In the most dramatic moment we have maybe seen thus far this Cooperstown season, Babe Ruth showed why he is considered a legend with a vintage performance against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday that will not be forgotten.

In a back and forth game, Ruthg had homered but the Yankees were down by two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Greg Olsen was on the mound for the Orioles to try and close things out and help the Orioles win a crucial opening game of the series.

With one out Craig Nettles walked and was followed by Derek Jeter who singled. With the winning run at the plate Yogi Berra flied out to right for the second out and Babe Ruth came to the plate. With Gehrig on deck the Orioles were not going to walk the Babe and as expected Olsen tried to get ahead of the slugger with the first pitch.

2 HR and 4 RBI

Ruth ripped the first pitch 406 feet over the right field wall to score three and give the Yankees the victory. The Babe has been a bit under the radar for the Yanks this early season but after tonight the Bambino and his legend are as real as ever.

"I told the boys to just give me a chance" said the smiling Babe, "I knew he would start me with heat and I was ready for it."

Many are already saying that the Yankees are just too strong for any of their competition.

Mags Shows He Belongs

In Chicago the White Sox and Royals are in a tough battle that would carry over into the 13th inning. The Sox had battled back from two runs down to tie the game at 2-2 going into the 10th.

Magglio Ordonez recieved a rare start in this game as the right hander has only had four atbats this season. In his first start Ordonez wanted to show that he belonged in Tony LaRussa's plans. In the 10th down a run Ordonez came up with a man in scoring position and came through with a single to left that scored Luke Appling.

The game remained tied until the 13th when again Maggs came up to face Joakim Soria to lead off the inning. Ordunez crushed the second pitch he saw and gave the win to the Sox. The White Sox are trying to turn their season around after a slow start and a game like this one could do just that. Ordonez may very well see more action after this heroic effort.

The Royals still are slipping and have the worst record in the game.

Dodgers Starting To Heat Up

After a very suspect start where they Dodgers lost 7 of their first ten games, the proud franchise have gotten their acto together and are riding a five game win streak. In their latest win the Dodgers beat their cross town rivals from Anaheim who just happen to be in first place.

Don Drysdale kept his record perfect by winning his third game as his teamates picked him up after he fell behind at Dodger Stadium by three runs early. Gil Hodges and Pedro Guerrero both hit two run home runs as in the end the home team would do enough for a 6-3 win. Chuck Finley was the losing arm on the night and didnt have much luck challanging the Dodger sluggers.

The Dodgers turned their season around in aig way over last weekend when they swept at four game series at Great American Ballpark from the Red Machine Reds.

"It was time to get our season back on track" said manager Tommy Lasorda, "now we are playing with confidence again and are more relaxed."

The Dodgers are in a virtual tie with the Angels for first place and the two teams will finidh their series at Dodger Stadium this week.

Jeter Struggles At Top OF Yankee Order

The New York Yankees have found a good stride and have won five games in a row. The Yankees defeated the Baltinore Orioles 4-2 as Joe Gordon hit a home run and Red Ruffing struck out six for a complete game win.

In the middle of their current run and their spot atop the AL East with a 11-4 record, one player isnt having the best of times at the plate. Many thought that with the power in the Yankee lineup and Jeter batting as leadoff that he would easily score over 100 runs and be the starter of the offense. After a decent opening week however the Yankee short stop has hit a cold spell.

Jeter slumping at the plate

Jeter is in the suffering of an ugly slump and only has two hits in his last 36 at bats. He is batting only .208 for the season and has scored only 11 runs while getting on base at a ,230 pace. Jeter may not be used to all the Yankee legends around him and some are saying either he is in awe of his mates or jelous of them. The New York press of course is loving the drama.

Winning solves everything however, and with the Yanks going well it is very unlikely that Joe Torre will tinker with anything. It is in after all a long season and a number of stars around the league have started slow; Willie Mays has only 2 RBI for the Giants and Joe Jackson is only batting .222 for the season.

Grove May Be Best Of Best

It is not an easy task to find the best at anything when one is dealing with so many great legends and stars. However as the first weeks of the season are moving along a few players have begun to shine, in the pitching ranks this star is Left Grove who won again for the Oakland A's and is helping pace their league leading 13-4 record.

Joss won his fourth game of the season by helping to beat the Texas All Stars and Nolan Ryan 9-3. Grove actually let up three runs in this game which was more then he had in any of his previous starts but his offense backed him with five runs in the first inning and the margin was more then enough. Grove struck out 11 and went the distance, only once this season has Lefty gotten a no decision and today was not the day.

This was a season high in strike outs and he has 32 of them for the season. He is holding hitters to a .216 OAVG and has allowed only six runs in his 44 innings of work. Grove has also only walked seven men. Another advanatge is working with catcher Mickey Cochrane who Grove knows very well and feels at ease with, familiarity in this league can be an issue.

"I think people are seeing just how good he is" says his loyal backstop, "his array of pitches may be as deep as many others, but the way he thorws all of them surpises hitters. All of his pitches are dominant."

The Athletics have opened a four game lead in the AL West and some are whispering that they may be poised to run away with the division.

Old School Pitching In Vogue

Some of the older franchises are beginning to lean on their older generation talent as the season starts to take its course. Many of the modern day arms arnt faring so well and seem to lack the durability that is needed at this level. Most teams dont want to go to their bullpens in game since many of the bullpen arms are considersbly less talented then the starters.

The Cleveland Indians this week called up Addie Joss for his first start of the season, Joss had been originally out of the plans of Al Lopez but now will get his chance.

Other stars like Rube Waddell and Smoking Joe Wood had been called up earlier by other teams and have faired quite well so far.

"The older pitchers tend to give up less mistakes as games in their era were often close." says Terry Francona of Boston who uses both Wood and Cy Young. "There is also a feeling that they may get away with more including their spitter."

League officials have denied reports that they are looking the other way when it comes to the popular pitch that was such an important weapon in the deadball era.

Cardinals Keep Reds In Misery

The St. Louis Cardinals came frombehind to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 in 10 innings in a game that the Reds appeared to have in hand. For Sparky Anderson and the Reds the loss is the 11th of the season and sees Cincinnati in the cellar of the NL Central.

The Reds had rallied in the top of the ninth in this game when down a run Barry Larkin hit a two run home run off of Bruce Sutter to give the visitors an emotional lift. Rob Dibble came on to close out the ninth however and a clutch Ozzie Smith double with two out tied the game to waste a winning effort by Reds starter Eppa Rixey.

Dibble would stay in the game in the 10th where he would lose it walking Ken Boyer with the bases loaded to score the winning run. The win for the Cardinals keeps them in in first place now a full 5 1/2 games ahead of Cincinnati.

"We have to close out ballgames and maybe Dibs isnt the man" said Anderson dejected after the loss. Dibble has been decent this season but has two blown saves, none more painful then this one.

Seaver Already Thtree Shutouts

Tom Seaver has taken the Cooperstown league by storm and is the early favorite as the games best pitcher in the best of leagues. On Friday night Seaver took the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies and their ace Steve Carlton.

Both teams would combine for only six hits in this game but it was Seaver who made the big pitches when he had to and ended up shutting out the Phillies to get the 2-0 win. Seaver struck out nine and has now thrown three shutouts so far this season, an incredible acomplishment against this talent.

Howard Johnson hit a two run home run in the third inning and it was more then enough for the win. Seaver leads the league in strikeouts with 46 as well as innings pitched with 45. The question is how many teams will Seaver shutout this season?

The Mets are 9-8 and tied for first place in the NL East.

MADDUX HANDLES YANKEES

In the Atlanta Greg Maddux took on the New York Yankees as Interleague play began for the first time in the Cooperstown League. It can still get hot in April in Atlanta but on this day Maddux had the Yankee bats on ice.

The crafty right hander held the visitors to only four hits and one run on the night to get the better of Whitey Ford and start the series off great for the Braves. Maddux struck out four and only walked one showing his typical control for his second win of the year without a loss.

The Braves scored three in the bottom of the first as Hank Aaron and Chipper Jones drove in runs. Mickey Mantle was the only Yankee to have more then one hit on the night with Lou Gehrig the only extra base hit.

The only imperfection on the night for Maddux is that he could not finish what he started and John Smoltz came on to earn his third save of the seaoson.

With the Red Sox winning in Philadelphia, the Yankees are now out of first place.

Boggs Unstoppable In Boston

Wade Boggs is off to the kind of start that many had expected from his teamate Ted Williams. Williams however is the one in an early season slump while Boggs is making a claim for early MVP honors. None of it should really matter in the end of course as long as Boston keeps on winning.

Boggs is white hot leading the league with a .436 average and a league leading 34 hits. Boggs is also tops in RBI with 27 thus far and is outperforming all of the sluggers throughout the league. Boggis is just coming through when his team needs him with men on base going 13/26 with men in scoring position.

"He is just in a groove and seeing the ball so well right now" said manager Terry Francona, "but then again when isnt Wade Boggs seeing the ball well?"

Williams on the other hand is only hitting .225 and has three hits in the last week. Williams hasnt been available for comment but the fact that the slugger is facing numerous pitchers he has never seen before on can study, may have something to do with it. No one expects Ted to stay cold for any prolonged time.

And again as long as the Red Sox are above the Yankees in the standings, no one really cares much.
