SO49 Crowns 1954 Champs....

Congrats to Paul Woodworth, the OOTP Forum's own Woody5254, and his Philadelphia Phillies on their 1954 World Championship and second title in three seasons...

The Phillies shocked the world by sweeping the heavily favored AL champion Boston Red Sox who posted a SO49 record 108 regular season wins.

Recaps to follow later, but some of the highlights:

- Games One, Two and Three were all decided by 1 run...

- The Red Sox outhit the Phillies 20-7 in the first two games at Shibe Park

- Game Three ended on a questionable strike-three call with Red Sox on base. Game Two also ended with a perennial .300 hitter taking a called third strike...also with Sox on base.

- Game Four was a 10-inning duel that featured a disastrous error by the Red Sox rookie 3B in the top of the 10th inning setting the stage for the homerun that put the Phils on top for good...

- Phillies stars included Del Ennis (2-HR, 7 RBI), Matt Batts (.412 BA), Ted Williams (.364 BA) and P Andy Varga (3 games, 2-0, no runs allowed, 1 save)

- Red Sox sluggers Frank Thomas (1 HR), Wally Post (0 HR) were outslugged by light-hitting SS Roy McMillan (2 HR)

Well the Phillies got a lot of good breaks and were lucky to pull it out against a very good team. Everytime I thought I had a game won, I had to deal with one last surge from the Red Sox.
