MLB Career Startup with 3 Levels of Minors?

I'm considering taking the plunge back into OOTP13 (especially with these incredibly pretty screenshots) after a couple years hiatus and have a question about MLB startup.

I realize that most MLB teams have about 5-7 levels of minor leagues but that's just a lot to manage.

Would it be possible to start a MLB career but designate just 3 levels of minors (AAA, AA, A) or maybe include 1 rookie league? If so, is there some kind of consequence I am forgetting.

I've been playing with 3 minor league teams for the last 9 seasons and haven't had any problems. As you mentioned, I considered playing with a rookie league but decided against it.

Three minor league teams works just fine.

One follow-up, is there an easy way to set this up from startup? I realize that we do not have OOTP13 , but could this be done in 2012 using the real rosters?

Yes, just start the mlb quickstart or new mlb 2011 game, delete the teams you don't want. When you get 13, you can import with no problems at all. Imports been testing fine in 13. Trust me, your gonna want 13 it's incredible.

THe only issue I can think of is that you would probably want to decrease the number of rounds in the amateur draft.

Keep in mind that if you do this, all players on the deleted teams will become free agents. I too find that I like to have only 4 levels of minors, but I don't want the teams to lose their lower level "prospects", so I will usually go in and do mass select and move anyone with at least a full star potential to the lowest level minor league team I intend to keep. It's about a half hour's worth of work (for all teams) in an MLB setup, but it's worth it.

Also, don't forget to set the roster size of your lowest level to either "unlimited" or at least something very large like 45. At least with previous versions this was fairly important in helping the AI with organizational movement, etc.

I see what you mean about teams potentially losing prospect type players.

So, if I understand this correctly, you would setup the MLB league as is...move the players with 2* or better on potential and then delete the remaining leagues (short season, 2nd rookie, etc)?

Correct. I tended to keep any player with 1 full star potential, particularly if he's an SP, but the main point is to do it before you delete the teams/leagues.

I'd also advise playing w/Ghost Players on, but that's just me. I find that it helps the AI with organizational management.

im a newb and have never played OOTP, but wouldnt multiple minor league teams (more than 4) allow you to see how players play? Or say your scouting is off and the player how unexpected potential? Does the player starting impact his developmental progress vice riding the bench?

Where do I enable ghost players? I have a feeling that's not turned on because the game won't let me continue because I have a minor league team with only 1 player. I'm looking through the league setup menus but cant seem to find it.

Under Game Setup, League Setup, Options, under Player Options is "Allow incomplete minor league rosters (ghost players).

Need to have that box checked.

Thank you...even after you posted it this took a little while to see. I thought it was referring to foreign players Anyway, thanks...

BTW - decided to just delete the SS leagues but did move the multi start players before deletion.

So can you 'mass select' all players from a team let's say rookie ball and transfer them to single a with one click?

My not aware that you can mass select, but would be curious to know the mechanics if possible. I went into each team and moved those players 2 stars or better to another league (SS to Rookie) and then deleted the rookie leagues. It really didn't take that much time.

On the roster screen, just above the roster list and on the far left, is a dot. Click on it to mass select all of the players on the roster.
