New Default Ballcap Template for OOTP13

Hi Folks!

With the release of OOTP13 just days away, I wanted to pass along some information regarding the new default ballcap template that will be included in the game.

One of the nagging issues with the present ballcap template were the visible 'gaps' where the individual panels of the ballcap met when used by facegen within the game. As shown in the OOTP12 snapshot below, a gap is evident where the front and side panels meet.

To fix this, Aurelio of the OOTP Team has revised the default ballcap template. Behold the new template:

A little different, isn't it? But I'm happy to say that the new template eliminates the nagging gaps completely!

This will be especially valuable since OOTP13 now features profile pictures in addition to the standard player pictures.

Obviously, this could have an impact on how we create our customized ballcaps, since the ballcap panels are no longer 'sharply' defined. Perhaps the applying of texures will not change so much, but maybe the placing of logos, as well as eyelets and seams that many mod makers add, will.

For myself, I found it useful to incorporate the new template along with the previous one into one photoshop (or gimp) template. That way, you can locate the logo, squatchee and other customizations using the old template as a temporary guide that can be turned off when finished with. But I eagerly look forward to see how others will use it (so I can copy it! )

Anyway, just thought I would pass this information along for the benefit of my fellow mod makers. Just another of the myriad ways OOTP is constantly improving!

Happy modding!

Just to add: all the logo/ballcap/jersey images shown were community created. They are not included in OOTP13.

Personally, I always thought those gaps were no mistake but the actual stitching on the caps.

So does this render all the the previous template obsolete? Will the old style cap still work in 13?

The old style cap will still work in 13. This revision was done simply to address an old bug. Using the old style cap just means that you will still see through them at the seams.

The gaps never bothered me anyway.

Sorry Aurelio, I must admit that I liked it the other way better because it looked like a seam. Although I guess we can now create a seam layer to make actuall seams on the hat.

Sweet, thank you Reds. I love the evolution of the template. I may use the old template for a historical/older league and then switch to the new version for a modern league.

I really like the facegen picture with the logos behind the player.

I completely understand, cj. But with OOTP13 now using profile pictures utilizing a bright background, the gaps can become even more noticeable, so a revised template was made.

One of the reasons I wanted to put this out to the mod community as soon as we learned that the template was revised was because of the massive Nickname Project that is currently underway - just in case this was going to impact all your efforts thus far.

If not, then that's great!

I didn't even think about the bold. That makes sense, since we haven't used bright background before. Do you know if we can simply paste old templates onto the new ones (with matching background, obviously) and have them turn out okay?

Like this

Thanks for thinking of us, btw.

Seams or gaps?

Wow, I have over two dozen caps at home and every one of them has "gaps" in it. Where can I buy some of these "gapless" baseball caps that are depicted in the new template! I have never seen a cap like that in my life. The old style no-flap batting helmets, yes, but caps, no. Caps have seams.

Man, if this had been posted yesterday I would think it was an AFD prank.

I don't see why that wouldn't work. That should 'close the gap' as it were. I going to try that when I get home later today and check the results.

I would really appreciate that! I see the potential for this and totally understand the reasoning for it. We might be able to swing some cooler looking shading and seam layers... who knows. Thanks!

question

Thanks for the info reds, but I do have a quick question.

Using the "new" template how would one create a tri-colored hat such as the Baltimore Orioles? Orange bill, black back and white front?

What I did when I updated the ballcap (for a certain mod that's in the works) is I kept the front white panel & orange squatchee from the older template and placed them on a layer above the new template in photoshop. I then made the default blue box on the new template to be orange & the rest black.

Since I had already created the ballcap using the previous template, it was just a matter of inserting the new one as a separate layer and keeping the panels I wanted and erasing what I didn't want.

Cool, that makes sense, and seems easy enough.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So is that template layer just one layer or different ones for the different colors? Are you just including that one image into past templates and coloring the different portions of the one layer or are there different layers?

Ugh, I wish I had known about this before I did over a hundred fictional caps. At first glance, the new template doesn't make much sense, but I'll have to play with it.

Will it work in 12?

Here are a couple of snapshots in OOTP13. Looks pretty good!

It is just one layer and I've been coloring the different portions using the paint bucket tool as needed.
