Koana Baseball Association - Season 2012
![]() ![]() Click map to enlarge (Big image!) Koana Baseball Association The Koana Baseball Association, also known as the baseball pyramid, is a series of interconnected leagues for baseball clubs in Koana Islands. The system has a hierarchical format with promotion and relegation between leagues at different levels, allowing even the smallest club the possibility of ultimately rising to the very top of the system. There are currently 6 tiers of baseball with the 6th being the start of amateur level. Leagues below level 6 can only gain entry to the 6th tier with the correct license which costs too much for the vast majority of amateur teams to afford. With approximately another 6 levels below tier 6, the exact number of clubs varies from year to year as clubs join and leave leagues or fold altogether, but an estimated average of 10 clubs per division implies that more than 2,000 clubs are members of a league in the Koana Baseball Association league system. About the system The system consists of a hierarchy of leagues, bound together by the principle of promotion and relegation. Clubs that are successful in their league can rise higher in the pyramid, whilst those that finish at the bottom can find themselves sinking further down. In theory it is possible for a lowly local amateur club to rise to the pinnacle of the Koanian game and become champions of the Super League (Koanian: Toppe Ligan). While this may be unlikely in practice (at the very least, in the short run), there certainly is significant movement within the pyramid. The number of teams promoted between leagues or divisions varies, and promotion is usually contingent on meeting criteria set by the higher league, especially concerning appropriate facilities and finances. The top four levels contain one division each. Below this, the levels have progressively more parallel leagues, which each cover progressively smaller geographic areas. Many leagues have more than one division. At the lower levels the existence of leagues becomes intermittent, although in some of the more densely populated areas there are as many as eight layers. There are also leagues in various parts of the country which are not officially part of the system as they do not have formal agreements with other leagues, but are recognized at various levels by state baseball associations. Clubs from these leagues may, if they feel they meet the appropriate standard of play and have suitable facilities, apply to join a league which does form part of the system. The four levels immediately below the Super League are known as the National League System and come under the direct jurisdiction of Koana Baseball Association. It evolved over many years. In the most recent major re-organisation, two new leagues were entered at levels five and six - the Combined States Super League and the Nationwide League - shifting the top divisions of each state to tier seven. The Koanian baseball league system does not include the vast majority of amateur baseball known as Weekendball (Koanian: Weakene ball). These leagues are independent entities with no promotion or relegation involving the baseball pyramid. However, some weekendball clubs have been known to join pyramid leagues if they desire to progress higher. Structure At the top is the single division of the Super League (which is often referred to as the "top flight"), containing 20 clubs. Below the Super League is The National League, which is divided into three divisions of 20 clubs each: First Division (Level 2), Second Division (Level 3) and Third Division (Level 4). The 80 clubs in the Super League and National League are all full-time professional clubs. They are often referred to as 'National' clubs because clubs outside this group are referred to as 'Local' clubs, although they too play most of their baseball in nation-wide competitions. The top tier of 'Local' baseball is the Combined States Premier League, which contains two conferences of 20 clubs each split between two divisions of 10 (Level 5). The clubs are placed in a division and conference depending on there geography (for example, the Northern-West Division). The CSPL is the lowest tier of professional baseball. Next down from the Combined States Premier League is the Nationwide League, the highest tier of amateur baseball (Level 6). 20 teams are split up geographically between 4 divisions and play only on weekends. The Nationwide League is also the highest league where a Designated Hitter is not used. Below the Nationwide League are state-run baseball leagues which encompass as many as 8 divisions (the state of Megopolis) to as little as two (the state of Hollyoak). The winner of each state's top flight baseball league is granted entry into the Nationwide League if they purchase a license, which most teams can't afford. Another problem arises because the gulf between the Nationwide League and State-run leagues is enormous making the purchase of a license almost pointless. Promotion and Relegation 1. Super League (level 1, 20 teams): The bottom three teams are relegated. 2. First Division (level 2, 20 teams): Top three automatically promoted; The bottom three are relegated. 3. Second Division (level 3, 20 teams): Top three automatically promoted; The bottom three are relegated. 4. Third Division (level 4, 20 teams): Top three automatically promoted; The bottom team is relegated. 5. Combined States Premier League (level 5, 40 teams): 16 teams compete in playoffs, with the winner gaining promotion. The team with the worst win-loss record in each conference are relegated to either conference in the Nationwide League as appropriate. 6. Nationwide League (level 6, 24 teams): Eight teams compete in playoffs, with the winners of both conference's gaining promotion. The worst placed teams in each conference are technically relegated on the proviso that newly promoted teams have a license to compete. Last edited by Nugget699; 03-26-2012 at 01:56 AM. |

![]() Click map to enlarge (Big image!) The Koana Islands Koana Islands (pronounced Co-AHNAH Islands), officially the Republic of Koana Islands is an Oceania country situated in the middle of the Indian Ocean. It's closest neighbours are Australia to the east, Madagascar to the west and Indonesia to the North. The capital city is Megopolis. The Koana Islands is made up of 32 islands, of which 11 are uninhabited and are national parks. The biggest island, Koana Island has an area of approximately 574,925 square kilometres and is home to the vast majority of Koanians. All up, the 32 islands provide an area of 931,223 square kilometres, roughly the size of Spain and Sweden combined. Around 93.4 million people reside in Koana Islands, with the majority concentrated in the central part of the mainland. The native language of most of the population is Koanian, which is part of the North Germanic language family and is most closely related to Swedish and English. The second official language of Koana Islands – English – is the native language of 5.5% of the population, although most people under the age of about 30 can speak very good English. Koana Islands is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in Megopolis and local governments in over 10,000 municipalities. A total of about five and a half million residents live in the Greater Megopolis area (which includes Megopolis, Black Island and Jonestown), and a sixth of the country's GDP is produced there. Other major cities include Bayside, New Auckland, Humoor, Embleton, Vizhune and Conneaut. Koana Islands was historically always independent from the rest of the world. With historical ties to the Vikings and early British explorers, the Koana Islands is a unique example of two different cultures sharing the land together. As a result, place names and locations are a mix of both British and Swedish names. During World War Two, in which the Koana Islands remained neutral, the Islands opened their doors to many Finnish, Polish and even German refugees. Approximately 4% of the Islands' population are now descended from the refugees. The Koana Islands joined the United Nations in 1955, and has been ranked the most stable country in the world, in a survey based on social, economic, political and military indicators. Koana Islands was a relative latecomer to industrialisation, remaining a largely agrarian country until the 1950s. Thereafter, economic development was rapid, and the country reached the world's top income levels in the 1970s. Between 1970 and 1990, Koana Islands built an extensive welfare state. In the aftermath of the country's severe depression in the late 1980s, successive governments have changed the Koanian economic system through some privatisation, deregulation and tax cuts. Koana Islands is well placed in many international comparisons of national performance such as the share of high-technology manufacturing and health care. The country was ranked 4th in the 2005 Legatum Prosperity rating, which is based on economical performance and quality of life. Contents States There are 13 states in the Koana Islands: # Dolphin Island - Located about 200km east of the mainland from Megopolis, Dolphin Island is home to 6,608,803 people. # Eveleigh - On the north coast, but located more centrally, Eveleigh is one of the most populated states with 600 officially recognised towns. # Henry Island - Located south-east of Mortdale, Henry Island is best known for it's Nelson Mountain, which extends over 1.3km in height. # Hollyoak - A small island to the west of Conneaut and the Northern state where. # Long Island - The most south-eastern state in the Koana Islands. # Megopolis State - Home to the Koana Island's capital city also by the same name and the highest population per area # Mortdale - Extends over 550km from east to west sharing borders with Megopolis, Eveleigh, and Wilkes. # North Island - The most northern part of the Koana Islands is located here (Wingrove) where the weather can become almost tropical. # Northern - A sparse area filled with few settlements and vast deserts. Some of the largest mountains in the Koana Islands can be found here. # Princeton - A group of 4 small islands located north-west sperated by the Inner Sea. # Snowy Island - The coldest state by weather, Snowy Island regularly sees snowfall throughout much of winter. # Western - The most western point of the Koana Islands, home to the second settlement in the Koana Islands (Bayside). # Wilkes - Separates the state of Western from the rest of the Koana Island, extending from the Inner Sea to the Great Southern Strait. Cities Many cities and towns in the Koana Islands are of interest to travellers. Following is an alphabetical selection of ten - others are listed under their specific states: # Bayside - Residents of Bayside are known as "Baysidites" and include a diverse mix of university professors, students, politicians, musicians, state employees, high-tech workers, blue-collar workers, and white-collar workers. The main campus of the Western University is located in Bayside. The city is home to enough large sites of major technology corporations to have earned it the nickname "Silicon City." Bayside's official slogan promotes the city as "The Live Music Capital of the World," a reference to its status as home to many musicians and music venues. In recent years, many Baysidites have also adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Bayside Weird"; this refers partly to the eclectic and progressive lifestyle of many Bayside residents but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses and resist excessive commercialisation. # Embleton - With many colleges and universities within the city and surrounding area, Embleton is a centre of higher education and a centre for medicine. The city's economy is also based on research, finance, and technology - principally biotechnology. Embleton ranks first in the country in jobs per square mile ahead of Megopolis and Humoor. The city has been experiencing gentrification and has one of the highest costs of living in the Koana Islands, though it remains high on world livability rankings. Embleton is also one of the birthplaces of the hardcore punk genre of music. Embleton musicians have contributed greatly to this music scene over the years. Embleton neighbourhoods were home to some of the leading local ska and ska punk scenes in the 1990s. # Gold Coast - Gold Coast City is renowned for its sunny subtropical climate, popular surfing beaches, expansive waterway and canal systems, a skyline dominated by high-rise apartment buildings, a peaceful rainforest hinterland in the west of the city, active nightlife and its wide variety of tourist attractions. Tourism is the region’s biggest industry, directly contributing more than $4.4 billion into the city economy every year and directly accounting for one in four jobs in the city. # Hollydale - Hollydale is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement in Hollyoak, which is said to have established around 1630. Until 1800 there was no urban development in the city location. The city was founded as an official trading town and grew steadily over the next decades, as it transformed into a regional and later national centre of commerce, population and governmental activities. Hollydale is a regular tourist destination for Koanians who want to get away from the big cities without leaving Koana Islands. # Humoor - Humoor is a major centre of commerce, education, tourism, the arts and cultural activities, and also industry. It is consistently ranked one of the most liveable cities in the world. The city is recognised as Koana Islands' 'cultural capital' and it is home to many of the nation's most significant cultural institutions. Humoor is notable for its mix of Koanian and contemporary architecture, its extensive parks and gardens, as well as its diverse, multicultural society. It has long been a running joke amonst the local population that despite being one of the largest cities in the country, Humoor is not recognized as a sporting city. The Humoor Hawks, Humoor's baseball team hasn't won the Super League since 1904. # Megopolis - Megopolis is a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the Koana Islands and the world. Being the Capital of Megopolis State and Koana Islands most major radio, television, and telecommunications companies are based here, as well as many news, magazine, book, and other media publishers. Megopolis has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. Megopolis has the largest central business district in the Koana Islands. Megopolis is a megacity built up around a bay. You won't find a downtown area here because this city has grown with virtually no planning over the course of time. # New Auckland - New Auckland, situated in the Wilkes mountains, is the capital of the Wilkes State. In the course of many years a large city developed from a small settlement around a fish pond. Apart from a small central lake, New Auckland has no real city centre. Nearly the whole city is a mixture of apparently haphazardly built office-buildings, shopping centres and residential buildings. Because of this the traffic situation is very poor. # Saphire Coast - The original city was actually built on the sands of the beach along the coast, but over time, the central business district has moved back inland, and is now situated either side of an island, surrounded by the Emerald Lake. Part of the main business district of Saphire Coast is on the narrow island, so the traffic on the bridges is quite heavy. # Vizhune - Vizhune is the largest city in the Northern State. Popularly known as "the Viz" or simply "Viz", Vizhune is situated in the geographic centre of the Great Desert. It was the fourth-fastest-growing large city in the nation from 2000-2006. Vizhune's weather is alternately dry or humid depending on prevailing winds, turning hot in the summer, mild to cool winters subject to descending northern cold fronts in the winter with cool to cold nights, and comfortably warm and rainy in the spring and fall. Vizhune receives about a dozen sub-freezing nights each year, occasionally (about once every couple winters) seeing some sort of wintry precipitation (i.e. sleet/freezing rain), but accumulation and snow itself is not very common. # Xyport - Xyport (formerly Xiport) is the cultural, scientific, economic and governmental centre of Long Island. Xyport is an important centre of maritime knowledge in the Koana Islands and is home to approximately 980 companies and 8,500 employees within the maritime sector, among which are some of the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers, and insurance brokers. The metropolitan area of Xyport has a population of 686,171, and it is the fastest-growing Long Island city. Other destinations # Nacka - Home to the museum that details the design and construction of the Ingatorp Strait High Speed Rail tunnel # Edhem Island - A small island that is part of the Long Island State. Contains many trails and bikepaths. # Nelson Mountain - A 1.3km high Mountain near the city of Mount Nelsondale. # Hugstetten - A small village located in a desert canyon in the state of Northern. Many helicopter tours usually stop here for a few hours, too. # Gladsax - A small fishing village near the cities of Gold Coast and Myrtle Beach that is home to "The Big Dolphin" tourist attraction. # Tolg Mountain - The largest mountain in the Koana Islands that stands at over 2800 metres. Many tours take you up the mountain to see the scenic view from various locations. Get in All travellers visiting the Koana Island, except citizens of Sweden and the United Kingdom, require a visa in advance of travel unless in transit for less than eight hours. For tourists, immigration problems can occur if they have a shady past, carry any documents not normally brought-in by genuine tourists (e.g. a resume), cannot demonstrate pre-arranged travel plans (e.g. hotel), sufficient funds to support their desired length of stay, or have an egregiously bad credit history. If you are staying with a friend or family member bring an invitation or their contact details and make sure you let them know that they are expecting you on your date of arrival. Australians may not stay in the Koana Islands any longer than 2 months from point of having a visa issued (upon arrival and subject to character tests). Overstaying or violating any terms of your visa can result in deportation and an indefinite entry ban. Should this happen and you ever want to return to the Koana Islands, you will need written authorisation from the Ministry of Justice in addition to a visa. Customs and quarantine Koana Islands has strict quarantine requirements regarding importing animal and vegetable derived products (any food, wooden products, seeds, etc). You must declare all such material, and all baggage is scanned and examined by dogs prior to entry. If you accidentally fail to declare an item you may incur an on-the-spot fine of KK220, which must be paid immediately. The law has the possibility of extremely heavy penalties including fines (in the order of 1,000s of Kronors) and even a possible jail term if you deliberately try to evade quarantine regulations. It is Koanian law that you must sign a Custom and quartantine form within 14 days of booking travel to the Koana Islands. By plane Approximately half of all international travellers arrive first in Megopolis, the largest city, (IATA: MEG; ICAO: YMGO). After Megopolis, significant numbers of travellers also arrive in Bayside, Conneaut and Ivywood. There are also direct international services into Ocean Point, Lexington, Mount Nelsondale, the Gold Coast, Humoor and Stondon though these are largely restricted to flights from New Zealand or Australia. To Megopolis it is a 5-hour flight from Perth, Australia, a 10-12 hour flight from eastern Australia, a 15 hour flight from New Zealand, a 14 hour flight from Johannesburg, South Africa, a 13-16 hours flight from Japan, and up to a 24+ hour flight from western Europe and the United States. On account of long journey times from some destinations, some travellers from Europe opt to have a stop-over, commonly in Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. If you have to change to a domestic flight in a gateway city, Megopolis, Bayside and Conneaut all have distinct domestic terminals, requiring some time and complexity to transit, check the guides. Ivywood, Ocean Point, Humoor, Stondon and the Gold Coast have all gates in the one terminal building or within easy walking distance of each other. Discount airlines There are only 2 routes into and out of the Koana Islands that are operated by discount airlines. The Koana Islands has the strictest airline safety regulations in the world, and as such, many budget airlines fail the tests despite having an impeccable safety record. # V Australia flies between Sydney, Melbourne and Perth to Megopolis, Ivywood and Bayside (the later of which requires a stopover in Megopolis) and is competing strongly with Qantas and Koana's own airline Airex for the route. # South African Airways flies between Johannesburg and Bayside twice a day. There have been calls to allow more flights into and out of the country with budget airlines due to V Australia, Qantas, Airex and Air New Zealand having to turn people away at the door due to high demand for flights to and from Australia and New Zealand. By boat November to February is the cruising season, and there are usually about 10 ships that arrive in the Koana Islands from other countries during this time. You can cruise to Koana Islands, and then fly home. Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Carribean, all offer cruises to Koana Islands stopping at Ocean Point, Tranent and Crawfordleigh on the east, and either Hydewaters or Saphire Coast on the west depending on who you travel with. Get around Travelling long distance in the Koana Islands is best done using the excellent and reliable train system. For tourists on time constraints and money being no object, all major cities have excellent and regular flights to and from that can shave several hours of the usual train journey. By plane Domestic flights are mainly used for business, with the train being a simpler and often (but not always) cheaper alternative for other travel. The boom of budget airlines and increased competition has made some flight prices competitive with trains to some major cities. Make sure though, that you get where you want go to. Unless you are travelling from island to island air travel is not recommended for the average tourist who is just city hopping. KoanaAr, Virgin Koana and SilverJet all operate domestic routes to major cities and towns with the latter mainly flying to smaller towns and less travelled routes. Generally, all airports are located close to central business districts and/or have good transportation options be it bus, train, tram or even monorail. In some rare examples however (for example Jaxon City), the airport is sometimes located a considerable distance from the CBD with no decent transportation options other than a taxi. So plan your trip accordingly. By train The Koana Islands has an excellent, reliable, and affordable railway system, which reaches almost every part of the country. Unless you travel by car, rail will be your major mode of transportation. All high speed services and most regional trains are operated by Koana Tag ("Koana Rail"), the national railway company. Megopolis, Conneaut, New Auckland and Bayside have extensive Subway systems that reach all major tourist hotspots. Tickets can be purchased in stations, from vending machines in the stations and via Koana Tag's website. In addition to a ticket, some trains require a seat assignment. Most trains have 230V power outlets. Services not operated by Koana Tag do accept Koana Tag tickets, but NOT the other way around. Bare this in mind when travelling on trains. Koana Tag's high speed rail line, the Hih Speed Lynk ("High Speed Connection") or HSL for short, is a must do whilst staying in the Koana Islands. With trains travelling upwards of 420km/h, you can go from Megopolis to Bayside in a little over 2 hours. The line connects Bayside, Grenada and Humoor from the west, through Cherry City, New Auckland, Blanchester, Thomasburg to Megopolis. From the state of the Northern, Vizhune connects to Megopolis via Erana Hills and usually forms the West service to Humoor. Southern destinations include Uckford, Ocean Point, Xyport, Lyndbank, Lexington and Saffron. The HSL runs under the Ingatorp Strait for 96km, connecting Koana Island with Dolphin Island, making it the longest train tunnel in the world. All up, the Koana Islands has over 28,778 kilometres of railway track, with a further 3,360km worth of high speed railway track, of which 794km is underground. By bus Local bus services (a categorisation which also includes many medium-haul inter-urban services) cover the entire country, but are of variable quality and cost. Rural bus services are in general better than in France and the USA, but not so good as in Italy or Germany. Services range from deep-rural village services operating once a week or less, to intensive urban routes operating every few minutes. All communities except the very smallest villages have some kind of bus service. All buses in the Islands are required to display the route number and destination clearly on the front. Almost all are "one person operation", ie. there is no conductor and you must pay the driver as you board. The vast majority of bus stops are "request stops", meaning that you must put your arm out as the bus approaches to signal that you want it to stop. Likewise once on the bus, you must ring the bell in advance of the stop you want to get off at. By car On the smaller islands such as Princeton and Hollyoak, driving takes you quickly from one place to the other. On other Islands the distances tend to be bigger between the different sites so the time spent driving may be long. Unless you really like driving, it is often more convenient to take the train or fly to the sites, particularly on the main land. Travelling by night can be dangerous due to unexpected animals on the roads and the cold nights during the winter. Collisions with wildlife are not an uncommon cause of car accidents. Despite this, the Koana Islands has 17,734km of Motorways with a further 45,752km of A-Roads, 26,031km of B-Roads and 61,252km of Local Roads (although sometimes known as C-Roads). If you stick to these roads you should have no problems as they are all well sign-posted and generally well lit. If you drive onto D, E or even U-Roads you may have a tougher time navigating as they may be poorly maintained or even unmarked on most street maps. By thumb Koana has a reputation for being a pretty difficult country to hitch in, though it's still quite possible to hitchhike (but not assured to be risk-free). Ordinary people are often reluctant to pick up strangers... Truck drivers are probably most likely to pick up hitchhikers, so target them. Asking at gas stations works pretty well. Bus stops are common places to attract attention, position yourself before the actual bus stop so the vehicle can stop at the stop. This works best if the road is widened at the bus stop, allowing cars to pull off easily. By bike Most Koanian cities have excellent bike paths, and renting a bike can be a quick and healthy method of getting around locally. Bike rental exists in some major cities such as New Auckland, Cherry City and Peanut Valley and is spreading fast across the country to other major cities. Urban cycling varies city-to-city. Most cities have designated cycle-lanes although they are routinely ignored by drivers and are often shared with buses, motorcycles and taxis. Some major roads will have split-pavements for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst other times cyclists are expected to ride in the traffic. This can be dangerous if you're not a skilled cyclist and general traffic rules should be adhered to. It's a legal requirement to have reflectors and a bell, and front & rear lights must be used at night. Also many cyclists use standard arm-signals to alert motorists - if you are turning left or right you should raise your left or right arm respectively, and if you wish to stop then you should wave your left arm up and down. Cycling is banned on certain roads - all motorways and many A-roads - a sign will indicate this. By foot Cars are by law required to stop at any unattended crosswalks (zebra stripes in the road without red-lights) to let pedestrians cross the road. But keep in mind that you are required to make eye contact with the driver so that they know that you are about to cross the street. Talk Hegh (hay) is the massively dominant greeting in Koana, useful on everyone. You can even say it when you leave. If you need to get someone's attention, whether it's a waiter or you need to pass someone one in a crowded situation, a simple ursekka ("excuse me") will do the trick. You will find yourself pressed to overuse it, and you sometimes see people almost chanting it as a mantra when trying to exit a crowded place like a bus or train. Koanian is one of the hardest languages to learn due to the fact it has next to no grammar rules, forcing any visiting tourist to memorise each word as it comes. However, people who are fluent in Swedish and English should be able to understand a handful of words. Generally speaking, Koanian words are either Swedish words spelt phonetically, or English words spoken phonetically. When approaching a stranger with a question, attempt to use Koanian at first and ask if they speak English, Koanians are very proud of their language and people will be noticeably more aloof if you approach them speaking English or Swedish. Even just using the Koanian equivalents of 'hello' and 'thank you' will make a noticeable difference to people. Here are some basic phrases for you to remember for your stay: Hello. Hegh. (hay). Also heghsan (hay-sahn) How are you? Hou och du? (Hoor orc doo?) Fine, thank you. Gud, thack du. (guud, tahk doo) What is your name? Vort ist dur nam? (Vort ist der nAm?) My name is ______ . E nam ist ______ . (E nAm ist _____ .) Nice to meet you. Trevlet att meet du (Trev-LEET aht meet doo) Thank you. Thack du. (Tahk doo) You're welcome. dur welcome (der welcome) How old are you? Vort ist du heur? (Vort ist der he-WHERE) Yes. Ja. (YAH) No. Ney. (NAY) Maybe. Marbe. (Mar-be) Excuse me. Ursekka (Ur-sek-kah) I'm sorry. E leadson (E led-sen) Farewell. Adjo (A-juuh) Goodbye. Hegh dor (Hay door) I can't speak 'Koanian' [well]. E cart tagh 'Koanian' [brog] (W cort taah 'Koe-AH-knee-an' [bro]) Does anyone here speak English? Dra enee oct tagh Englisk? (Dra, Eh-nee oct taag Eng-lisk?) Help! Hjawlp! (Yawlp) Look out! Se Ort (Say ort) Good morning. Gud morghon (Guud Morhon) Good day. Gud dagh (Guud daag) Good afternoon. Gud efternay (Guud efter-nah) Good evening. Gud kvahll (Guud ker-VICK-ah) Good night. (to sleep) Gud natt (Guud natt) I understand. E ungerdagh (E un-ger-dah) I don't understand. E cart ungerdagh (E cort un-GER-dah) Do The Koana Islands is great for outdoor life - skiing in Snowy Island, hiking in the mountains dotted throughout, canoeing, cycling and many more. All major cities have great night-life and shopping opportunities. Most cities have well-preserved pre-industrial architecture and places like New Auckland have picturesque views of the mountains surrounding the city. The year in Koana Islands Koanian weather is best during summer (late November to early March). If you like snow, go to Snowy Island and southern Henry Island in May to July. Be aware that daylight varies greatly during the year. In winter, the sun sets at 5 PM in June. The major holidays are Easter, Christmas (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are all considered holidays), and the "Islands Day" on the second of May. Expect closed establishments, heavy traffic (for the holidays) and crowded tourist resorts (for July). Opening Day in the Baseball (around the beginning of April) is considered an unofficial holiday with most small shops and businesses shutting down for the day. Though this is mainly only in smaller towns and cities. Buy The national currency is the Koanian Kronor (KK, plural kronore). Automatic teller machines take major credit cards. Most stores, restaurants and bars accept all major credit cards. You usually need an ID card or a passport when shopping with a credit card, regardless of the amount involved, though usually not in supermarkets and such where PIN code is king. It is not common to bargain in shops but it might work in some instances, especially when buying more expensive products. Bargaining is also okay at flea markets and in antique shops. When dining out, a service charge is often included in the bill, and there is generally no reason to tip, unless you're very satisfied with the service. Most shops, at least down town, are open all week, even on Sundays. Closing times are rigid, most often on the minute. The future coin series will consist of 1, 2, 5 and 10 kronor, and the banknote series of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 Kronore. You will have no problems finding or using ATMs and nearly all machines regardless of operator will accept MasterCard, Maestro, Visa, Visa Electron and American Express. In some ATMs you can withdraw Australian Dollars if you have a card issued by an Australian bank. Though, you will usually only find these in Airports. Costs Compared to the rest of Asia and Oceania, the Koana Island's is notoriously expensive. For example: Sundries like a 33cl bottle of Coca Cola costs KK10, a beer in a bar will cost you around KK45 (nearly double the US price). Stay safe Koana Islands enjoys a comparatively low crime rate and is, generally, a very safe place to travel. Use common sense at night, particularly on Friday and Saturday when the youth of Koana Islands hit the streets to get drunk and in some unfortunate cases look for trouble. It is statistically more likely that your home country is less safe than Koana Islands, so heed whatever warnings you would do in your own country and you will have no worries. Racism is generally of minor concern, especially in the cosmopolitan major cities, but there have been a few rare but highly publicized incidents of black or Arab people getting beaten up by gangs. The average visitor, though, is highly unlikely to encounter any problems. Pickpockets are rare, but not unheard of, especially in the busy tourist months in the summer. Most Koanians carry their wallets in their pockets or purses and feel quite safe while doing it. Parents often leave their sleeping babies in a baby carriage on the street while visiting a shop, and in the countryside cars and house doors are often left unlocked. On the other hand, you have to be careful if you buy or rent a bicycle. Bicycle thieves are everywhere, never leave your bike unlocked even for a minute. In Case of Emergency 777 is the phone number to dial in case of fire, medical or criminal emergency. It does not require an area code, regardless of what kind of phone you're using. The number works on any mobile phone, with or without a SIM card, even if it's keylocked. Police officers are rarely on patrol, and might be too busy to head out for minor crimes. To report a theft or getting in contact with the police in general there is a national phone number 717 171 that will bring you in contact with an operator at a police station (usually nearby, but not always). Respect Koanians generally have a relaxed attitude towards manners and dressing, and a visitor is unlikely to offend them by accident. Common sense is quite enough in most situations, but there are a couple of things one should keep in mind: Koanians are a famously taciturn people who have little time for small talk or social niceties, so don't expect to hear phrases like "thank you" or "you're welcome" too often. The Koanian language lacks a specific word for "please", so Koanians sometimes forget to use it when speaking English, even when they don't mean to be rude. Also lacking in Koanian is the distinction between "he" and "she", which may lead to confusing errors. Loud speaking and loud laughing is not normal in Koana Islands and may irritate some Koanians. Occasional silence is considered a part of the conversation, not a sign of hostility or irritation. All that said, Koanians are generally helpful and polite, and glad to help confused tourists if asked. The lack of niceties has more to do with the fact that in Koanian culture, honesty is highly regarded and that one should open one's mouth only when it is really to mean what one is about to say. Do not say "maybe later" when there is no later time to be expected. A visitor is unlikely to receive many compliments from Koanians, but conversely, they can be fairly sure that the compliments they do receive are genuine. In the more remote areas of Koana Islands, many locals will be glad to talk to tourists to find out what they think of the country. Koanians take immense pride of their country, and don't like unwarranted criticism. A good talking point is Baseball, in which the majority of Koanians support feverishly. Taking in a Super League game whilst staying in the Islands is a must-do. Another highly regarded virtue in Koana Islands is punctuality. A visitor should apologize even for being late for a few minutes. Being late for longer usually requires a short explanation. 15 minutes is usually considered the threshold between being "acceptably" late and very late. Some will leave arranged meeting points after 15 minutes or 30 minutes (maximum). With the advent of mobile phones, sending a text message even if you are only a few minutes late is nowadays a norm. Being late for a business meeting, even by 1-2 minutes, is considered bad form. The standard greeting is a handshake. Hugs and kisses, even on the cheek, are only exchanged between family members and close friends. If you are invited to a Koanian home, the only bad mistake visitors can make is not to remove their shoes. During the winter months, particularly in Snowy and Henry Islands shoes will carry a lot of snow or mud, and therefore it is customary to remove them, even during the summer. During the wet season you can ask to put your shoes somewhere to dry during your stay. Very formal occasions at private homes, such as a baptism (often conducted at home in Koana Islands) or somebody's 50th birthday party, are an exception to these rules. In the wintertime, this sometimes means that the guests bring separate clean shoes and put them on while leaving outdoor shoes in the hall. Bringing gifts such as pastry, wine, or flowers to the host is appreciated, but not required. In Koana Islands there is little in the way of a dress code. The general attire is casual and even in business meetings dressing is somewhat more relaxed than in some other countries. Contact Koana's international calling code number is +98. Payphones are available, with older models only accepting cards (special smartchip phone cards as well as credit cards), and newer models that accept coins (Koanian as well as Australian Dollars). Collect calls are possible by dialling 2# on a pay phone. Koana Islands has excellent wireless GSM and 4G coverage, even in rural areas except in the Northern state outside of major roads, cities and towns. The major networks are Telcom, 3, Sonexia and Koatel. Swedish GSM operates on the European 900/1800 MHz frequencies (Americans will need a triband phone), with 4G on 2100 MHz (currently with 7.2-14.4 Mbit HSDPA speeds). Only the Sonexia network supports EDGE. Prepaid USB 4G modems can be bought cheaply (around KK150) in many shops. They are a good alternative to WiFi in the Koana Islands. They cost around 100 KK/week and 300 KK/month to use. Data limits are high (typically 20 GB/month). Koana Islands is the world's third most Internet connected country (third to Iceland and Sweden). The Koanian postal system ("KIPost") is often considered efficient and reliable, with locations placed inside of supermarkets and convenience stores (look for the Blue envelope logo). Stamps for ordinary letters (to anywhere in the world) are KK12 and the letter usually needs 2 days within Koana. Stamps can be purchased in most supermarkets, ask the cashier. |

Season 2011 - Year in Review
![]() The New Auckland Warlocks won their second Super League title in a row thanks to some stingy defense and excellent pitching staff, finishing 8 games ahead of the Megopolis Titans who improved from their 4th place finish in 2010. Andor Wiik, third in rotation for the Warlocks, led from the front going 24-6 in 32 games played whilst Li Dryden also finished the season on a high for New Auckland, finishing the year 22-3 with an ERA of 1.91, striking out 284 in the process. Zak Bradley batted .286/.367/.547 and led the team in HR, RBI and led the league in Sac Flys with 13. 23-year old RF Christo Nolan, in only his second professional year led the team with a batting average of .297, which included 36 doubles and 7 triples. Otherwise, it was a predictable top 5, with the big spenders all finishing as they were predicted,. Nicky Loxton of Rothes won his 6th Outstanding Pitcher Award after leading the league in Wins, Walks/9, K's and WHIP. His K/BB ratio of 16.33 is double that of second placed Li Dryden (7.10). At the opposite end of the standings, the Saffron Knights were the only team who won promotion to the top flight in 2010 to survive the dreaded first season, finishing 6 games ahead of Downtown Metros, 63-99 in 16th place. Ivywood Thunder and the Blanchester Wild, the former of which has recently been bought by billionaire businessman Erasmus Crawford Jr. found the going tough. Ivywood in particular suffered from inexperience, with all 5 members of their starting rotation having never played in the Super League before. Blanchester, who last played in the Super League in 1982 were doomed right from the start when they went just 5-15 for the month of April. The Downtown Metros finally succumbed to relegation after 4 years in the top flight. The Megopolis-based club had a slim chance to survival after winning 3 straight (2-1 and 6-4 @ Blanchester, and 11-9 @ Saphire Coast) with two to go before the Sharks proved too strong. The result means that the Hollydale Islanders remain in the Super League for a fourth straight year, including two consecutive 17th placed finishes. Awards Hitter: Johannes Hjertstedt (VIZ) - .326/.427/.557, 37 HR, 145 RBI, 89.2 VORP This 32-year old just can't seem to stop. The LF picked up his third straight Hitters Award as he helped his Vipers to a 3rd place finish in 2011. He led the team in Average, HR and RBI and led the league in the latter two, plus WAR, BB and VORP. Batting clean-up ahead of ever present Domenic Loetzsch, Hjertstedt will look to continue his fine form for Vizhune where he has two years left on his contract. Pitching: Nicky Loxton (ROT) - 24-3, 2.01 ERA, 255.2 IP, 294 K, 92.7 VORP A deadset freak on the mound, Loxton helped keep Rothes competitive throughout the season. The Long Island team struggled offensively but defensively were sound, and much of the credit needs to fall on this mans shoulders. With a repertoire of pitches that include the best Changeup in the league, and a killer Sinker, Loxton walked just 18 batters all season (and that's not even his record! In 2003 he walked just 13!) whilst striking out 294. He boasts an impressive Groundball ratio of 74% and at age 32, Rothes have many great years ahead with this guy on the mound. Rookie: Andrew Vincent (RID) - .293/.356/.436, 13 HR, 84 RBI, 27.1 VORP The Ridgewich Falls Pride wrapped up their 8th season in the top flight with an impressive 8th place finish (87-75) having struggled on the field for the last few years, finishing no higher than 10th. They have Andrew Vincent to thank for that. The First Baseman hit impressive numbers in his first professional year to help the Pride cement their place in the Super League. Only LF Tom Gazard, a player the Megopolis Titans have been hunting, and Catcher Lorenz Lauchart hit better numbers for Ridgewich Falls this season. If 23-year old Vincent can avoid striking out as regularly as he did last season, you can expect the Arbordale native to be in the top flight for many years to come. |

News - Spring Training 2012 has drawn to a close this evening, with all 20 teams starting their final games at 7:05pm. Grenada topped the Spring Standings with New Auckland, Vizhune and Dyce following close behind. - Rookie Pitcher Matthaus Clemens is being hunted by the Port Redhill Raiders. The 23-year old is one of a few hot prospects who has yet to sign with any team so far this off-season. Rumours are persisting that he will sign with Port Redhill "in the next few days" for a deal expected to be around KK6,700,000 for the right-hander. Nyhaven and Lyndbank are also said to be interested. The Princeton-born native is expected to walk straight into a starting rotation due to his excellent control and stamina. His stuff still needs some work and some of his pitches are still quite poor, but assuming he doesn't go to one of the 'Big 5' he could well be the difference between relegation and safety and is a certain Super League-caliber player. - The start of the KBA Cup kicks-off tomorrow, with all but 8 of the professional teams in action. The KBA Cup is in it's inaugural season this year, and consists of all 120 professional clubs taking part in a knock-out style cup competition. The winner of the competition wins KK10,000,000 with the runner-up set to bank half of that. The top eight teams in the Super League last season receive a BYE in the first round. The 32-year old, who hasn't played in the Super League since the 2003 season for Cruden Bay went 2 for 2 including a walk as he scored twice and batted in a run. He tripled on his time at the plate. Rothes' Alfie Odhe homered for the fourth time this Spring with 1 on in the 3rd, whilst Oliver Trana hit a solo shot in the 4th to tie the scores. ![]() ![]() Vizhune thrashed Tranent 13-4 after a 9-run 1st inning against former Hollydale pitcher Anthony Prescott who was pulled after two-thirds of the inning. Ever-present Domenic Loetzsch went 1 for 4 with including a 2-run HR in the first. ![]() ![]() Saphire Coast wasted little time opening up a 3-run lead against the Bobcats, before ultimately falling 7-3. Ryan Sperring hit a 2-out triple to bring runners home before scoring himself of a Burnell single to give the Sharks a 3-0 lead. Madison Harbour retaliated in the 6th, scoring 5 thanks to a handful of Sac Flys. Pitcher Jyri Nousiainen got the loss and the blown save after giving up 4 runs on 3 hits in 1.2 innings. ![]() ![]() A last day win for the Pride meant little as they finished last on the Standings with a 4-15 record. Ridgewich Falls fell behind to a Marcus Tegner single which brought home Tuukka Ryti in the second, before the Pride saw there first three hitters make contact, including a triple from Patrick Crimp, who later scored to give his team a 2-1 lead. Crimp scored again in the fourth to give the home side a 3-2 victory. ![]() ![]() Dyce edged past the Cardinals 7-6 with Kauto Reynolds and Marcus Dhu going 3 for 4 with 2 runs and an RBI each. The latter of two homered in the 4th for his fourth HR of Spring. Bryan Gilder pitched 6.1 innings in the loss, allowing 7 runs on 11 hits striking out 5. Third Baseman Jeckel Gögler was the best batter for Independence, going 2 for 5, scoring both times. Last edited by Nugget699; 03-26-2012 at 05:11 AM. |

Clippers fear upset to underdogs
![]() ![]() Hydewaters Clippers manager Jake Nesling (pictured, left) is expecting the Berlin Guards to get "stuck into his team" in the KBA Cup first round clash. Berlin Guards, arguably one of the richest clubs in the Combined States Premier League, travel to Golden Ballpark tonight on a mission to carry out a huge giant-killing act. "Every manager will tell you, you don't want to be a casualty," said Nesling. "We don't want to be embarrassed in the inaugural season of this event. Berlin will get stuck into us, there's no other way for them." About 1,000 supporters are expected to travel from the small Henry Island town, which is located near Palmont Hills and Ulster. The Berlin Guards, amongst the favourites to win the division, have just completed a strong Spring Training, where they finished with a 12-8 record, which included Jonne Niiranen pitching a shutout victory over the Wingrove Hornets, giving up just 3 hits a walk whilst striking out 4. Nesling believes their run of form during Spring has underlined the strengths of the team. "They talk about the KBA Cup being a waste of time but it won't die as long as you've got these giant-killing potential games that the Berlin Guards have in their first season," stated the 65-year old. "We respect the fact that Berlin are one of the best Local sides for quite a while. "They seem to have a lot of money invested in their players and are in with a chance to finish near the top of the league, so they have every chance of becoming a National team. "There is always room for ambition and they could do well when they get into the National League, given the kind of money they have behind them and the ambition they have got." Berlin Guards were nearly KK 3m in the red until businessman Bartholomous Udall became the owner. Udall announced that the club were debt-free in July 2010 shortly before their acceptance into the newly formed Combined States Premier League. Some bookmakers have made Berlin Guards 33-1 to win the game against the Super League outfit but Guards 3B Eduard Bartelot (pictured, right) feels his side can pull off an upset. "It's unbelievable. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," enthused the 26-year-old. "I might not be able to play at Golden Ballpark again so we have to take our chances when they come. "Whatever team they put out it will be a good one but we have to go there thinking we can win. "There's no point in going there expecting to get hammered is there? "If we did that then there would be no point in turning up. We all think we have got a chance." |

News - Round 1 of the KBA Cup started today with 112 teams in action. Upsets were few and far between, although lowly Lanaya City Blackhawks upset the Zion Mercury, who are three divisions above them, 8-1. A masterclass performance from Bailey Hollinshed who gave up 1 run on two hits in his complete game helped the Megopolis State team into Round 2 where they face the Nyhaven North Stars in what will be a difficult task. - All Super League teams progressed except for Sandford City who were thumped 14-3 by the Lumberjacks. Harrison Doolittle the stand0out for the Jacks, going 1 for 3 with an RBI, 3 Runs and 3 BB. 19-year old Rick Morrow, who will most probably have a spot in the rotation for the Bulldogs looked shaky before being pulled midway through the 5th. - Megopolis Titans LF Gerry Calleson strained his back during light exercises. The 29-year old suffered an oblique strain in his teams 17-4 victory over Hollydale in pre-season. He is now expected to miss the first 4 games of the season. Last year, Calleson played mainly in RF, and batted .307/.350/.533 in 118 games for the Titans. He joined the Titans as a rookie in 2003 but made his breakthrough in 2006, making 19 appearances. KBA Cup Round 2
The 'Big 5' enter the fray tomorrow, and most have simple tasks ahead of them. Only current league champions the New Auckland Warlocks face the difficult task of traveling to Ivywood to face the Thunder who dispatched Prywynne Astros from the small island of of Knista. The Thunder are already tipped by many to be runaway winners of the First Division. Megopolis and Vizhune are home to Arbordale Power and Springside Thrashers from Divisions 3 and 2 respectively whilst Rothes should avoid complacency when they host the Yewside Rockies from Wilkes. Independence City has the tough game of tackling fellow Super League team Saphire Coast at the Shark Tank. The two sides met in Spring Training on the 11th of this month, with the Sharks winning 7-4 after Pitcher Mark Wainwright walked 5 and allowed 1 hit to concede 6 in the second inning. Elton Amphlett is expected to get the nod to start tomorrow. Other mouth-watering clashes include Port Redhill hosting Saffron with the latter winning 8-0 in a Spring game on the 17th, whilst the Conneaut Spartarns meet fellow First Division side Cruden Bay. Nyhaven North Stars (1) @ Lanaya City Blackhawks (5) Eulera Revenants (5) @ Downtown Metros (2) Tempest Lake Skyhawks (1) @ Cape Orchardhill Lumberjacks (2) Jonestown Broncos (4) @ Xyport Vikings (2) Waterford Avengers (4) @ Ruysdael Generals (3) New Auckland Warlocks (1) @ Ivywood Thunder (2) Paradise Lake Warriors (4) @ Bryankeld Panthers (3) Yewside Rockies (5) @ Rothes Blue Jays (1) Glenton Hills Chiefs (3) @ Cosby City Capitals (2) Clayfield Blaze (3) @ Cumberland Jets (3) Claystead Blues (4) @ Riverburgh Claymores (4) Thomasburg Eagles (3) @ Stondon Steelers (2) Springside Thrashers (3) @ Vizhune Vipers (1) Caron Chargers (4) @ Erana Hills Wolves (2) Saffron Knights (1) @ Port Redhill Raiders (1) Cape Coral Crushers (4) @ Blanchester Wild (2) Uckford Ducks (2) @ Dyce Whalers (1) Roggered Heat (5) @ Shettleston Blue Sox (3) Grenada Kings (1) @ Port Humoor Fleet (4) Aslow Redbacks (5) @ Dunnport Rhinos (4) Pointborough Huskies (4) @ Hollydale Islanders (1) Greenborough Wildcats (2) @ Lyndbank Phoenix (1) Arbordale Power (4) @ Megopolis Titans (1) Madison Harbour Bobcats (1) @ Algona Seahawks (5) Hydewaters Clippers (1) @ Cherry City Devils (3) Water Valley Hurricanes (2) @ Ridgewich Falls Pride (1) Conneaut Spartans (2) @ Cruden Bay Tribe (2) Humoor Hawks (4) @ Portlethen Mariners (2) Farming Falcons (4) @ Gold Coast Tigers (3) Ind. News - Ivywood Thunder provided the biggest shock of the Cup so far, defeating the New Auckland Warlocks 4-1 in front of 17,652 fans ecstatic fans. Zak Bradley gave the visitors the lead in the second before the Thunder leveled the scores when David Gross singled to send David Loosemoor home. Alfred Westermark hit a double in the 5th to bring home 2, before Loosemoor hit an RBI-doubled to bring Westermark home 1 out later to give Ivywood a shock victory. - Elsewhere, Vizhune, Megopolis, Rothes and Independence City all breezed past their respective oppositions with relative ease whilst Dyce were soudnly beaten by First Division team the Uckford Ducks, 5-0. The Jonestown Broncos, currently plying their trade in the Third Division, smashed the Xyport Vikings 11-2, having fallen 2 runs behind heading into the top of the 8th when Oliver Wessel gave up 8 runs on 5 hits to all but condemn the Vikings to a second round exit. - The Third Round of the KBA Cup provides some tantalizing clashes. The Hydewaters Clippers travel to Megopolis to face the Titans, along with fellow Super League team Nyhaven, who face First Division side Downtown. Saffron has to overcome another top flight team, as they square-off against the Vipers whilst the only 5 tier team, the Aslow Redbacks have the near-impossible task of facing the Rothes Blue Jays. ![]() ![]() Noah Bloomberg had a night to forget in the Round of 32 of the KBA Cup, giving up a walk-off Homer to see the Lexington Wasps through to Round 4. Michael Ahlquist walked Marten Wilander (0-3, BB, K) in the bottom of the 9th with the Bobcats leading 2-0 before Bloomberg surrendered a 2-run homer to right field from Sulo Kuikkonen (1-4, RBI) on an 0-2 count. Efraim Fasjovik (2-4, Run, K) then tripled from a line drive that slotted between Right and Center Field to keep the pressure on the young pitcher. 3B Olle Hanssen (1-3, Run, BB) was intentionally walked but it backfired when Iestyn Hodgson (2-4, Run, 3 RBI, 2 LOB) belted a 3-run HR that just fell inside the foul pole in right field for the victory. Bloomberg, in his first season in the Super League after singing a minor league deal with the Bobcats was optimistic for the future, despite a poor showing. "I'm not devastated. Everyone has bad days and mine was today. Life goes on, sh*t happens, right?". Earlier, Martin Paxman (1-4, RBI) hit an RBI single to left field to bring Stefan Engen (1-4, Run) home at the top of the 3rd, giving the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. Lindsay Kjellsson (1-1, RBI), who pinch hit for Rutger Funnell (1-3) doubled the lead in the top of the 9th when he hit singled Quintin Hornby (2-3, Run, BB, K, 2 LOB) home. Lexington will now host Division 2 surprise team the Bryankeld Panthers who smashed Super League outfit the Lyndbank Phoenix 12-2. Bloomberg joined the Pointborough Huskies in 2005 but didn't find his form until they were relegated to the Third Division, where he went 14-10 with 11 saves and an ERA of 2.94 from 152 games. in 2010, the 26-year old signed a 1-year deal with the Shettleston Blue Sox valued at KK 1,593,000 and went 2.25 from 36 Games, including 71 K's and a WHIP of 1.23. Season 2011 was a drop in form for the Megopolis-born reliever, when he played 49 Games, starting 10, posting a 4-5 record wih 5 saves for an ERA of 4.52. Results ![]() |

KBA considers London Series The Koanian Baseball Association hasn't ruled out playing a Super League series in London in 2013, following the huge success of the Japan Series over the last two days in Major League Baseball. The Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics played a two-game series in Japan to start the MLB season and was widely regarded a huge success. With a large Super League following in the United Kingdom, KBA commissioner Ian Sovijaarvinen hasn't ruled out playing top flight games overseas: "Britain has a fairly large group of baseball fans who support not just MLB teams, but also Super League sides, too. "We could really capitalise on that, and it's something [The KBA] are looking into". English-born Carl Helland doubts whether staging a series in London will have a major impact on the sport's popularity in the UK. Sandford City Catcher Helland told KBA.tv: "People will show up, even if it's just out of curiosity. "The hardcore Super League fans will also be there, but I know the kind of hold soccer has over sports fans in the UK. I don't think that one game or series is really going to convert people". Helland, 35, lived in Portsmouth, England until his family moved to Blanchester, Eveleigh when he was 7, and joined the Claystead Blues in the Second Division in 2000, aged 23. He predicted players on the two teams chosen for the series would also need to be convinced of its value to their league. "It all depends on how it's handled," he said. "For me, it would be paramount to have at least a few days off after the game because of the long flights. There's also the question of how many days beforehand do the teams arrive in London, and what other stuff will they have to do while they're there. I know how guys in the Super League are about where and how they prepare for a game - players are really particular about these things. You are also taking away a teams home series, and that's a huge thing in the top flight. Each team only has 81 games in the season and it's really hard to win on the road". The Bulldogs, who are widely tipped to battle against relegation this year, are one of six teams in the frame for London, although everything at this stage is just rumour. Helland added: "I guess I'm a little sceptical, but I want it to go well for the league, and it will be interesting to see how it all works out. Heck, if the Doggies get to go, I might be the most popular guy on the team!" ![]() ![]() CF Damon Pengilly (2-4, Run, RBI, BB, 1 LOB) scored off of a Helmer Hjelm (4-5, RBI) double in the top of the 10th to allow the Grenada Kings a safe passage into the Quarter-Finals of KBA Cup. Grenada's Eddie Schultz (7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K) and Pride's Valio Jokela (7.1 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K) played outstanding with the first run not coming until the 5th when Damon Pengilly hit an RBI single, allowing 1B Kristian Tinney (1-3, Run, K, 1 LOB) to score which was how the score remained until the bottom of the 8th when Ridgewich Falls equalised. Shortstop Saku Dulihanty (0-2, Run, BB, 2 K, 2 LOB) was walked on a 9-pitch at-bat forcing the Kings to bring in relief pitcher Sakari Lehtoranta (1 IP, 1 H, Blown Save). Right Fielder Joseph Meriken (0-3, K) hit a sacrifice bunt moving the runner to second who was waved home on a Nikolaus Johnson (1-5 RBI, K, 2 LOB) double to left field 3 pitches later. The Kings now face giant killers the Bryankeld Panthers, who defeated the Lexington Wasps, 5-1. ![]() ![]() The Rothes Blue Jays squeezed past Cumberland this evening, defeating the Cumberland Jets, 3-0. Nicky Loxton (7.1 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K) is now 2-0 in the Cup, following a good night on the mound when run support was lacking. Douggie Deverell (2-2, Run) scored after tagging up from 3rd on a Chris Oxenstierna (0-3, RBI, 2 LOB) Fly Out to center field in the 3rd. Alfie Odhe (0-3, BB, K, 2 LOB) could have extended the lead when Heinrich Holstein (1-4, Run, RBI, 2 LOB) reached on a Manfried Abley (2-4, K 1 LOB) error but hit a lame groundball straight back to pitcher Alastair Herzfeld (8 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 5 K) who threw a complete game. Third Baseman Deverell was involved again in the bottomn of the 7th, Sac Bunting 1B Oliver Trana (1-3, Run, 1 LOB) to second who singled on a 3-1 count straight between First and Second Basemen. Liam Zetterlund (2-3, RBI, 1 LOB), the Designated Hitter, singled on a line driver to short center field bringing Trana home to double the lead. Henrich Holstein hit a solo blast on the second pitch of the 8th inning to complete the rout. Results ![]() |

Rothes, Ind City, Megopolis and Rothes all progress Only four teams remain in the hunt of the KBA Cup. Rothes defeated fellow Super League outfit the Tranent Fury 3-1 to progress to the Semi-Finals to face the Grenada Kings who thrashed Bryankeld Panthers, 14-3. Meanwhile, Megopolis Titans have become firm favourites to win the Cup following a 9-2 demolition of the Vizhune Vipers this afternoon. The Titans will host the Independence City Cardinals, who defeated the Uckford Ducks in the blazing sunlight, 9-1. Fagerstedt surprises many, and not just in baseball Port Redhill Raiders Right Fielder Tuukka Fagerstedt has a second string to his bow that defies the typical baseball players stereotype: he loves science. When the New Aucklander puts his glove away for the day, the study books are opened for his course in social science, which will hopefully one day lead to a degree in physics. He may be building a reputation as one of the top outfielders in the Super League but the smart money is on him enjoying similar success in the world of academia. Originally part of the Waterford Avengers in the Third Division, the 33-year-old joined Xyport Vikings in 2007 where he made over 788 appearances in First Division baseball. Raiders Manager Markus Martinsen made him one of his main targets over summer and since Spring Training the left-hander Fagerstedt has hardly looked back. "I've enjoyed my first few months at Port Redhill so much," he said. "I used to watch the Super League Show when I was in Xyport and think how I wanted to play in the top flight. Now that I'm here, every single second is so enjoyable". While enjoying his baseball in Division 1, Bobby is also looking to a possible new career when he finally hangs up his glove, and his love of science is very much to the fore. "I am on a course from the Open University and it's sort of a foundation year, basically something you have to do in order to pursue any degree," he said. "The course covers all the basics of social science, such as geology, biology and physics, which is the subject I'm most interested in. It teaches you the basics of equations and once you know that you can pursue your favourite area. I enjoy numbers and I finished a course in maths just after I signed here at Port Redhill. Numbers have always fascinated me and that ties in with physics". There should be few problems in closing angles or judging the flight of a ball but if the dressing room banter at Lionel Road ever turns to astro-physics then Tuukka will feel right at home: "My girlfriend's brother has a degree in astro-physics and the whole family is involved. My girlfriend has a masters in biology and another brother has a masters in journalism. My brother also works in a really difficult chemistry school in Vienna. I used to watch a lot of documentaries but I haven't had a lot of time lately. My evenings are spent reading books and working on the computer. My assignments are just uploaded to the Open University website and they assess it from there. You get sent eight or nine books and then the course gives you a month to work through each book. "It is so different from professional baseball and that's why I like it. I can take my mind away from a bad run of form or even if you're doing well, it stops you for getting ahead of yourself". Born in New Auckland, the six foot outfielder had his family visiting for Spring Training and is quick to pass the credit for his academic success on to his father: "My Dad is really into baseball and he was here for most of Spring Training. My Dad was also an outfielder back in the old Wilkes Top League but had to stop playing because of injury. His views are very much the same, enjoy your baseball but also make sure you have some sort of education because that's what happened to him. He stopped playing baseball at 24 and took the education path". That education should stand Bobby in good stead in later years but for now he is totally committed to his baseball and loving life with the Gulls. His form is catching the eye of many shrewd judges including Megopolis Titans manage Casper Tennant. "Both my parents are from New auckland and I do see myself as an Aucklander. I was born and raised there, but if I was given the chance to play for the Titans, it would be amazing". Premier League starts tomorrow The Combined States Premier League, the fifth tier of professional baseball in the Koana Island's kicks off tomorrow. All 40 teams are in action, with all games starting at 2:30pm. Amongst some of the favourites to win promotion to the Third Division include the Linktoria Ravens, Gnarp Reds, Eulera Revenants and the Tyle Gators. Waterhaven United dreaming big
![]() ![]() The Super League is all about big. Biggest income, biggest audience, biggest earners, biggest egos... the biggest deal in club baseball. Waterhaven United, however, are anything but big. They have a squad of 25 – amongst the smallest in the Nationwide League – and a payroll to match. With a population of 68,500, they could become the smallest town ever to have a team in the country's richest league. All they have to do is win promotion from where they currently lie, 6 tiers away. There have been many heroes in Waterhaven United's remarkable history – the highlights of which have been beating the Dyce Whalers in an exhibition match 4 years ago, as well as defeating the Prywynne Astros last year in a league game. One of them is Arne Bohman (pictured, left), who has played in every game, becoming the first Waterhaven United player to make 800 appearances for the club. There have been five games for the Princeton All-Stars team too, not that the 38-year old who plays in Right Field, would ever complain. His father and brother are truck drivers and Bohman says: "I speak to my dad all the time and he is moaning about having to get up at 3am every morning to drive his truck. It's the same for my brother. It would be immoral if I was to complain about anything, really. I'm in a privileged position to come out every day and do something I love". Bohman and his team-mates have huge respect for another of Waterhaven United's heroes, the manager Hubert Daintry. The former Waterhaven Pitcher, who has been annoyed by rumours about a possible move to Eulera Revenants, has worked wonders in his two years in charge. "He came in with his own ideas and has been fantastic," Catcher Ilmo Faber says. "He's well spoken and softly spoken, but he can put his foot down when he wants to. He treats you like a human being and he expects you to train and act like an adult. We've got massive respect for the guy and I think that shows". The players also have great respect for the fans. "The town's buzzing; there are flags everywhere," Faber says. "The supporters have been key for us ever since we knew we had been accepted into the Nationwide League. They've really played a part. This area is very passionate and it will be a ghost town when the we play away from home, but I'm sure the pubs will be full. Hopefully, we can get back and celebrate with them fairly often". Then there is the unsung hero of Waterhaven United – the club's owner Casper Narup (pictured, right). The fans love him and no wonder, because he is very much one of them. Narup was the talk of the island following his announcement of plans for "free" season tickets for the most loyal fans should Waterhaven United get promotion this season. Narup, 50, who made his fortune by setting up a ferry company between the islands of Princeton, cheered Waterhaven United to the Princeton Island's League title in 2010 and followed them to the Magic 10, where they lost to Fortuna Union in the the knockout phase. He played for the youth team in 1978, the first year of existence and bought into the club 10 years ago having sold his business. Being chairman is, according to Narup, "like being a fan, but to greater extremes". "Have I enjoyed it? I've never regretted it. I just wanted to have an influence on this club, which has a unique place in the social fabric of the place I come from. It takes over your life – it's a massive thing. Every time I'm out in a restaurant, or whatever, people just want to talk about Waterhaven United. But you wouldn't want it any other way, would you?" Narup has bought up land around Solna Island Field to help with any expansion plans, but is happy with the capacity of around 34,000. The Nationwide League averages just over 3,500. He has spoken out against the greed of the Super League and the number of "wannabes" who align themselves with the big clubs. He admires the efforts of Dyce Whalers and Hollydale, but is not sure Waterhaven United – with it's small market size – would be able to go up against the bigger clubs in the country. "When you look at [Dyce and Hollydale] they are matching it with the big boys despite the small markets they are in. I really like that. "I think being where we are on the small island of Solna puts a big dent in any chances of us making much further up the pyramid. But we are really going to give it out best shot!" |

Grenada shock Rothes in the Semis The Grenada Kings are through to the first KBA Cup final after upsetting the Rothes Blue Jays in 10 innings this afternoon. Having trailed for the almost the whole game, The Kings scored in the 8th and 9th to tie the game, before Johan Kristoffersson (2-4, Run) tagged-up from third on a Helmer Hjelm (0-4, RBI, K, 2 LOB) fly out to give the Kings the victory. Designated Hitter Liam Zetterlund had doubled the Blue Jays lead in the 7th with a solo blast to left field. Grenada will go into tomorrow night's decider as big underdogs after the Megopolis Titans sunk the Cardinals at home, 3-2. Hendrick Rasmussen homered to deep right field in the 6th to break the deadlock in which the Cardinals came from behind twice to level the scores. The KBA Cup final is scheduled to start at 7:00pm West time at Hilltop Field at Exhibition Square. Sandford City snap-up Erich Schbert In what will surely be a major coup for the club, the Sandford City Bulldogs have completed the signing of 23-year old rookie Erich Schbert to a minor league contract. The right-handed Shortstop was released by the Tranent Fury earlier today after a dismal Spring Training where he only managed 8 hits on 45 plate appearances with 2 Runs and 2 RBI for an average of just .178. Whilst Tranent isn't packed with talent at Short, Fury manager Larry Horton said Schbert just isn't ready for the Super League: "He is only a Division 2 player at best at the moment. "His Spring Training was unusually poor, and he was just taking up a valuable roster spot, something that we need to take advantage of". They did just that, completing the signing of 18-year old Reliever Andreas Coate who spent Spring Training at Port Redhill, having traded for the youngster form Xyport in late 2011. The right-hander pitched 4.1 innings over 3 games in Spring, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits whilst walking 5 and striking out 2. 2 minutes with Tom Gazard ![]() Name: Tom Gazard DOB: 06/25/1987 Club: Ridgewich Falls Pride Position: Left Field -Tell us about your debut. Megopolis win KBA Cup The Megopolis Titans have claimed the inaugural KBA Cup, defeating Grenada by 3 runs at Hilltop Field at Exhibition Square. In ideal preparation for the upcoming season for manager Caspar Tennant, the Titans responded to every challenge the Kings threw at them. In front of 36,518 fans, Daryl Hodge (4-5, 2 Runs, RBI) and Designated Hitter Hendrick Rasmussen (3-5, 2 Runs, 4 RBI, K, 2 LOB) paved the way for Megopolis with dominant displays with the bat. "He was outstanding," Titans manager Tennant said of the Rasmussen. "I thought he really gave us a spark to get going after the Homer". After a disappointing end to 2011, the rejuvenated Titans were again on display, after routing Independence City and Vizhune on the way to the final. The game began in poor fashion for Grenada, as they gave up a two-run blast just right of center in the top of the second by Rasmussen who brought Stig Jakobsen (2-5, 2 Runs, 4 LOB) home who had earlier singled on an infield chopper. Grenada responded in kind with a 2-run homer to the same place from Johan Kristoffersson (2-3, 3 Runs, 2 RBI, BB, K) half an inning later after SS Bert Lewknor (2-5, RBI, 2 K, 2 LOB) overthrew first base allowing Ale Allison (0-4, Run, 2 K) to reach base safely to lock the scores at 2-2. The Titans wasted little time rebuilding their lead, when Daryl Hodge solo'd with 1 out before Kaj Larsen (1-5, Run, 3 LOB) and Bert Lewknor both single to center field. Jakobsen then grounded into a fielders choice which allowed Larsen to advance to third before Rasmussen came to the rescue again, doubling on a line drive to right field allowing both Larsen and Jakobsen home. The Kings had seen enough and Eddie Schultz (2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 K) was pulled in favour of Sakari Lehtoranta (2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB) who walked Victor Gadd (0-4, BB, K, 1 LOB) and allowed Ross Myatt (2-4, Run, RBI, K) to single to Shortstop. Jacob Heathcote (0-4, RBI, BB, K, 2 LOB) was dually walked bringing Rasmussen home for a 4-run lead going into the bottom of 3rd. Grenada pulled a couple back in the 5th, when Kristoffersson and Andrew Yandell (2-4, Run, RBI, K, 1 LOB) both scored of a 1B Helmer Hjelm (1-3, 2 RBI, BB) double but Ross Myatt's line drive fell just inside the right field foul pole to give Megopolis the lead, 7-4. Johan Kristoffersson was involved in the scoring again for Grenada when he was brought home of a line drive from Andrew Yandell, having earlier singled to left field. This spelt the end of Harley Nevins who had struckout an impressive 10 batters, including Damon Pengilly (1-5, 3 K, 2 LOB) three times. Bert Lewknor hit an RBI single in the 8th to complete the rout. Kristoffersson was understandably disappointed with the result. "It's really frustrating to get this far and not be rewarded for a really good pre-season" he said. "We played a lot of our players, particularly our youngsters through Spring Training, and it would've capped it off to win the Cup in front of our home fans". Megopolis now looks forward to April 6, with the Titans set to travel to Dolphin Island to face the Lyndbank Phoenix where they hope to continue the form shown throughout the last month to continue into the regular season whilst Grenada opens there season hosting the Hollydale Islanders in a 3-game series. ![]() Pride sign Franks ![]() Ridgewich Falls have completed the signing of Free Agent Blake Franks in a deal worth KK 9,640,000 over 3 years. The 29-year old Reliever from Landhagen, about 55km west of Splimopia, joined the Clayfield Blaze in 2007 where he spent the last 4 years plying his trade in the First and Second Divisions. Known for his excellent stuff and good control, the righty throws a Fastball that can touch 100mph and is also able to throw an amazing Splitter. Last year, the Reliever had an ERA of 6.96, with a WHIP of 1.88 from 82 games. He also started 7 games in which he completed two of them. Ridgewich Falls Manager Claus Strick is pleased with the signing: "He really showed his ability last year in the First [Division]. We intend on using him as a Setup guy, but he can last in games so we may be able to use him as the occasional spot starter if needed". Franks was unavailable for comment, but on his twitter account, @BlakeyFrankfurts, he posted: "Sgned with da Pride 2day, lookn fwd 2 meeting my team-mates". Wednesday April 4th 2012
This Friday the Super League, Koana Island’s top baseball league, starts a new season. Contributor Nic Niskanen takes a look at each team and their prospects for 2012. For non-Koanians, especially those who come from traditional baseball powerhouses such as the United States, Japan or Korea, the standard of Koanian domestic baseball can be depressing. We only have a few teams each year capable of winning the title, while the rest battle to stave of relegation for another season In stark contrast to so many other baseball leagues no team has won the Super League outside of the "Big 5" since Conneaut Spartans in 1958. With the same five teams harboring realistic expectations of challenging for the title, 2012 will be no different. ![]() Dyce rebounded straight back up to the Super League after being relegated in 2010 and they may have just enough left in the tank to see them survive another relegation at the end of the season. The Princeton-based team have some really young hurlers, including 16-year old Svenbjom Attwell, whose lack of experience could be the Whalers undoing. In fact, the whole team is lacking in experience having built a side up around youth. Strengths Despite their ages, Attwell and Rob Backstedt (17), both in their rookie seasons lead a strong pitching staff that also includes closer Kai Addison who pitched a 1.87 ERA from 47 games back in 2010. The young bullpen, with none over the age of 24 except for Artur Forstan, will need to pick up the slack. Left Fielder Jai Upchurch could be a surprise amongst the top batters in the league. In 2010, aged 19, the Merriford-born youngster went .263/.314/.313 from 131 games. Last year in the First Division he batted .371/.457/.491 in 585 AB. His lack of power of his only real weakness, as he stoled 36 bases last year, too. Expect him to lead-off in the line-up. Weaknesses Experience, experience, experience. Dyce has next to none. Most of these youngsters have never even played professionally having signed over the off-season. Those that have generally only have First Division experience. The learning curve will be steep. Bottom Line Despite the lack of experience, Dyce's pitching staff should have enough oomph to not need any run support in games against similar opponents. 12th. ![]() The Kings had a poor year last season finishing 14th, 14 games above the drop zone. However, a strong off-season has strengthened the squad and they should match it with the big-boys at the top end of the table. Grenada begins their 3rd year in the Super League having finished runners-up in the KBA Cup and will look to push on from there. Strengths Grenada snapped up former New Auckland Closer Crister Egerman in the off-season, along with young rookie Third Baseman Ale Allison, who will slot straight into the line-up. First Baseman Helmer Hjelm went .300/.367/.527 last year, and will easily rank in the Top 10 Batters again this year. Watch out for 18-year old reliever Bart Neumann, who will surely make his debut some time this season. Weaknesses Despite a sexy Active Roster, the reserves are lacking, with some barely good enough for Local teams. Marcus Borden was signed from Tranent over the off-season and looks every bit like being the liability he was at the Fury. Bottom Line If Grenada stays relatively injury-free the Kings have every chance of squeezing into the Big 5. 6th. ![]() The team from Hollyoak seems to be punching above their weight in the Super League. Yet since their promotion in 2008, the Isles have survived by the skin of their teeth each time. Last year they avoided the drop by 4 games, but have a real possibility of finishing higher up the table this year. Strengths Starting Pitcher Oliver Myrdal is in his third and final year at Hollydale, having signed as a rookie in 2009. This guy is the main reason for the Islanders survival in 2009 and 2010, going 24-25 for an ERA of 3.39 in 64 games over the two years. He has already pitched two shutouts as well. The bullpen is amongst the best in the league, with rookie Tim Parsons, Joe Stuart and Aiden Sowerbutts all expected to make big contributions. The latter of the three signed from Vizhune. Rookie Phillipp Lickliter is a rare gem out in Left Field. Although not game-ready, the 21-year old will surely make his debut at some point this season. Weaknesses As of typing this, Hollydale has a squad of, wait for it, 29. Only woefully inadequate pitcher Malcolm Leeder sits on the reserves and he has never played in the Super League before since his signing from Arbordale. The Isles have 5 Shortstops, and none of them are any good; two of them will certainly miss Opening Day through injuries. Lars Sæther is expected to be given the role, and he has never played higher than Division 2. Last year for Crawfordleigh, the 30-year old went .313/.382/.398; not exactly Super League caliber numbers. Bottom Line Hollydale could well be plying their trade in the Super League for at least the next two years, but they need to fix up the SS and the squad depth as soon as possible. 13th. ![]() The most westerly-based Super League team is the true definition of average. Since returning to the top flight 1999 the Clippers have never finished higher than 5th or lower than 12th. In fact, in the last four years Hydewaters has finished 10th, 12th, 10th, and 12th. Unfortunately Hydewaters fans, the average-ness (that's right, we make up words here at KoanaBaseball.com) is going to continue. Strengths Center Fielder Zachariah Bowlby will surely continue where he left off last year (.304/.404/.394). Starter Jens Dindorf is hoping to have a slightly better season than last year when he missed 4 months through two separate injuries. Young Closer Carlo Pryor is one of the best in the business whilst 2B Torbjorn Ekroth, a real utility fielder who can play everywhere but Catcher will be sorely missed at the start of the season whilst he is out injured. SS Everton Rivers is the dark horse in the Clippers team. The 18-year old made his debut in his only appearance last year, but could knock Callum Orton out of the spot as soon as Opening Day. Weaknesses The bottom of the rotation is awful, with 33-year old Quincy Shopland and Ewan Stockdale not good enough for this league. Catcher Edwin Porter had a good year in 2010, leading the team in Homers (12) and RBI (88). Unfortunately, Spring Training seemed to show him struggling, and Hydewaters have no adequate cover at the plate. Bottom Line Ruprecht Christensson is a young starter who will look to muscle his way into the rotation this season, if he does the Clippers could finish slightly higher than middle-of-the-road. 10th. ![]() Cardinals owner Rio Samuelsson announced in late 2011 that he was going to cut funding to his beloved team. Why? Because apparently 31 years in the top flight without a title is just too long. I don't blame him. Independence City is one of the "Big 5" yet they have never finished higher than 2nd and haven't finished higher than 4th since 2000. Is this going to be one the last hurrah's of the Cardinals, before they start to slip down the standings and become like every other Super League team? Strengths There isn't a man (or woman) in the country who wouldn't snap up young Shortstop Jeckel Gögler in a fantasy draft. In his debut season last year, the 22-year old notched up impressive figures of .278/.374/.381 from 138 games. Starting Pitcher Elton Amphlett is expected to start on Opening Day and is in with a chance of breaking the Top 10 Pitchers list for the first time. Closer Gavin Bellett and 18-year old reliever Sixten Smith will also prove a big factor. The depth of the Cardinals at the moment is quite weak, but they have a plethora of youngsters waiting for their big break including 16-year old Left Fielder Sebaldus Stroebel who may have a few chances pinch-hitting this year. Weaknesses Gunner Fredriksen was traded to the Cardinals from Erana Hills last year and it was clear the Wolves got the better deal. The 29-year old Catcher is expected to start ahead of Tim Jakobsen but both have really poor power with the bat, and struggle in all areas at the plate, both offensively and defensively. In fact, it's not surprising to see Fredriksen batting 9th throughout the whole season. Pitcher Mark Wainwright had a few spot starts last year, his rookie season, and is expected to make the rotation this year. Whilst his potential is through the roof, he is currently not a Super League-caliber player. Bottom Line The Cards are along way from the Megopolis' and the New Auckland's of this league, but should finish quite nicely in the Top 5. 5th. ![]() Lexington returns to the Super League for the first time since 1998, but unfortunately for the Wasps faithful, it looks like a long year looms. Despite signing some young studs, the Wasps are horrifically out of their depth and anything but relegation will be a huge victory. Strengths This is hard. Reliever Rich Jensson is by far the best pitcher on the team despite his tender age of 21. Roy Kyle will also have to be on his game in the bullpen, although unlike last year he won't have to play Closer. The Wasps snapped up a gem from the Dolphin Island league system in Marten Wilander; the Left Fielder will make his debut at age 26. The Wasps also have a great prospect in First Baseman Soren Thul who could see action this season at DH due to his poor fielding. Weaknesses Both Infield and Outfield are terrible, with Shortstop particularly woeful. Starter Quentin Tyack was snapped up from Division 1 Embleton during the off-season and didn't really set that league alight. The few useful players on the team are all over the age of 34 and on the decline statistically. Bottom Line Lexington squeezed ahead of Uckford for the final promotion spot last year with 2 games to go. It was perhaps best they didn't win their last 3 games of the season. 19th. ![]() Lyndbank begin their 6th season in the Super League having never finished lower than 8th. With a good young team led by Alvin Eliassen, the Phoenix are poised for another top 10 finish although not as strongly as last year when they missed out on breaking into the Top 5 by a single game. Strengths Eliassen went 21-7 for an ERA of 2.77 in 221 innings last year and is amongst the Top 10 pitchers in the league. CF Beau Robilliard is in his 8th year in the Super League and 4th with Lyndbank. The 32-year old has never batted below a .260 average since 2007 and ranked second in triples last year with 11. Right Fielder Axel Mattiasson followed Robilliard from Greenborough to Lyndbank in 2009 and last year posted .305/.369/.460 including 91 runs from 144 games. Young CF André Nystrom is one to look for in the future as well as Catcher Jean Sæther who may have a long wait for his debut. Weaknesses Lyndbank's Starting Rotation is a bit thin, and the team's depth in most areas needs looking into. Left Field is a bit of a concern with Abraham Friggeberg on the decline; despite his best year in 2011 since his first Super League season in 2008. Bottom Line Financially, Lyndbank are secure and with a strong team, and good prospects, the Phoenix will be playing top flight ball for a few more years yet. 8th. ![]() The Bobbies finished 2011 in 14th place but fought against the drop for much of the year after going 8-18 in June. Despite a high number of signings, very few are Super League ready and Madison Harbour can expect a similar finish to last year. Strengths 33-year old SP Michael Ahlquist is a certainty to start on Opening Day for the Bobcats, with Rhett Ayliffe providing stiff competition for the 1st spot on the rotation. Second Baseman Martin Paxman had a fantastic rookie year in 2011 (.276/.360/.379, 58 Runs, 40 RBI) and will be a definite starter around second or third in the lineup. Rookie Shaun Overton is one to look out for in the future. Weaknesses The loss of 32-year old Pyry Tuomainen will hit Madison Harbour hard. The RF, who signed with Saffron during the off season, led the team in HR and RBIs last year. In fact, Right and Left Field are both really weak whilst Harbour will have a large number of losses whilst Holger Koertig and Viljami Tuominen remain in the starting rotation. Closer Carl Gräslund can be a bit of a liability, with his ERA and WHIP going up considerably in each of the last three years. Bottom Line The Bobcats have some real talent in the squad, but they also have some dross. They are a bottom-half side but should be good enough to avoid the drop. 16th. ![]() The Titans fell away badly towards the end of 2011, finishing 8 games behind eventual winners the New Auckland Warlocks. The 17-10 record for September proved their undoing, as the Warlocks went 22-5 for the same month. Strengths One of the biggest problems last year was the bullpen which has now been tightened up with the signing of Richard Truswell from New Auckland. The loss of Brandon Blenkinson in the rotation has been fixed with the signing of Ivan Svendsen from Rothes in a 5-year KK112,000,000 deal. Daryl Hodge has become the first choice Right Fielder, ahead of Stewert Bloye who batted .297/.388/.385 for the year in 2011. 37-year old Kaj Larsen looks set to lose his Third Base spot to Louis Shuker this season. Bert Lewknor from Saphire Coast has finally plugged the gap at Shortstop. Weaknesses Center Field is still a bit "meh" by Big 5 standards, and back-up Catcher Felix Olsson is an obvious band-aid solution to the problem. Any injury to Ross Myatt will see the lack of talent in Olsson shine through. Outside of the rotation the Titans have no adequate reserve pitchers and are really lacking in spare infielders. Bottom Line The Titans haven't won the title since 2008, but have a real distinct possibility of breaking that drought if they can avoid the September slump that has plagued them time and time again. 1st. ![]() The Green & Gold won their second consecutive league title after a 16-year wait since the last one but with one of the oldest teams in the Super League, is the cherry about to pop? Strengths Household name Li Dryden doesn't look like he has aged at all, and will be an obvious choice for many to win his third Pitching award. Goran Hansen is the quiet under-achiever, but could have a more prominent role in the team as Andor Wiik seems to be on the decline. Reliever Alfie Grist may even make a few spot starts this season. Right Fielder Ian Pegge has joined from Lyndbank after batting .314/.412/.580 last season but will have a fight on his hands to hold the top spot with Christos Nolan, who is currently on the disabled list with a slight knee complaint. Remember the name Odell Thurgood, who is touted to be a Nicky Loxton clone. Weaknesses Age is a big factor for the side, and many players may not be up to standard come the close of 2012. Offensively, the Warlocks are quite poor with depth in both Infield and Outfield a major concern. RF Zak Bradley led the team in HRs last year with 36, but he has now lost his spot to Ian Pegge who isn't a big slugger. Andrew Earnshaw had a great year on the mound in 2011, but the 29-year old could find the going a bit tough this year. Bottom Line Age is a major factor as the players start declining and the Warlocks are like a retirement home. New Auckland will struggle to match Megopolis or Vizhune this year but will still walk over most of the league. 3rd. ![]() The Stars have had a 20 year absence from the Super League before they romped away with the First Division title last year, finishing 13 games ahead of Dyce. Their return looks to be short-lived however, with SP Lenny Titmus ruled out for the season with a torn ligament in his elbow. The pitcher is likely not going to make his Super League debut this season. Strengths Despite the loss of Nyhaven's favourite, the North Stars picked up some impressive rookie's who could certainly have a career in the top flight such as Starters Hano Heading and Lambert Pettersen. Closer Elias Andersson posted an ERA of just 0.28 with a WHIP of 0.60 in his 64 starts last season, although save opportunities may be quite scarce in 2012. 19-year old CF Peter Isacksson (.247/.299/.383, 65 Runs, 60 RBI) is a real dark horse. Weaknesses Unfortunately, Nyhaven lacks any real talent at the Infield positions, and most players struggle to hit for power. Colin Tibbetts signed from Jonestown and looked out of depth in Spring Training, don't be surprised if prospect Axel Hallstrom makes his debut on the mound in 2012. Shortstop William Rennenberg will miss most of April with a fractured thumb; a month when the team face New Auckland, Vizhune and Megopolis. Bottom Line A weak team that has some solid prospects coming through. Expect them to bounce between the Super League and First Division over the next few years. 20th. ![]() Port Redhill ranked 12th in Runs Against per game, but were tied for 3rd last in Shutouts. Thankfully, the team stepped up with the bat and they finished a respectable 13th in their 9th season in the top flight. The forecast for the Raiders is much of the same. Strengths Ross Anderson is the lone star in the pitching staff as an average Starter, but Third Baseman Rex Blume is the obvious standout. He led the league last year in Batting Average with .342 and Hits with 212, unfortunately he only scored 89 times and drove-in just 49. Despite his, he has improved each year since his Super League debut in 2008, and will be the go-to guy for the Raiders again this year. Former Xyport RF Tuukka Fagerstedt improves the outfield, but has never played at the Super League level before. In reserves, the Raiders have a couple of good teenage relievers in Janne Gilliatt and Han Marples, but the definite blue-chip prospect is Bart Lee, who sits behind Joakim Baumgart and Bryan Wilcox for the starting spot at Second Base. Weaknesses The pitching staff and in particular the rotation is very weak. 36-year old Crister Karneus is the faithful Closer, but he can't go on forever. Mainio Kivivuori is woefully inadequate for Port Redhill's rotational needs. The Catcher position is also poor, with Sami Dahlquist and Otoo Cajander expected to share the role. Both are barely First Division caliber players. Bottom Line The Bats need to be the same as the temperature in Port Redhill if they are to stay well clear from the relegation zone... Hot, hot, hot. 11th. ![]() The Pride had there best finish in 6 years in 2011, notching up an 84-78 record for 8th place which included an impressive batting average and team ERA. But a poor off-season will leave the Wilkes-based team with a bit of a fight on their hands this season. Strengths Valio Jokela is amongst the best pitchers in the league, and will get the nod ahead of Spencer Rowarth who is also a good quality hurler. 24-year old Left Fielder Tom Gazard (.313/.414/.563, 110 Runs, 104 RBI) has his position locked down, whilst Catcher Lorenz Lauchart (.298/.353/.421 69 Runs, 65 RBI) comes off a good first season with the Pride since moving from Grenada in 2010. Ridgewich Falls have some excellent prospects in the ranks, with Outfielders Marcel Tilden and Mario Rowe just two of the up-and-comers. Weaknesses Like most teams, the depth in the rotation is weak, with Claus Lester and Ensio Ollson expected to start in their rookie years whilst Lee Nyle is a bit of a liability as Closer since signing from Division Two team Glenton Hills. Although Gazard is a monster in the outfield, Iestyn Popplewel and Nils Silven, the expected starts in CF and RF respectively, are poor; the former is only 18 though. Bottom Line If this team can hang around for another few years and bolster it's pitching staff, the Pride could become quite a team to watch. 14th. ![]() 2011 could be considered a failure for the Blue Jays who went from 2nd place in 2010 to a disappointing fourth last year. This season looks much the same for the North Island team. Strengths No Rothes preview is complete without mentioning Nicky Loxton, who won his 6th Pitcher of the Year award last season; amassing a 24-3 record with an ERA of 2.01, 0.87 WHIP, 294 K's from 255.2 IP. Closer Alexander Sneddon is expected to hit the high 40s for saves again this year whilst all pitching staff can rely on Catcher Christoffer Oxenstierna who led the team in batting average last year with .335 which included 88 Runs and 95 RBI. 2B Callum Hughes and CF Heinrich Holstein also deserve mentions. Weaknesses Besides Loxton, the rotation is very poor by Super League standards; so expect some high-scoring games from Rothes this year. Outfield is also a bit of a concern, with only 6 players considered "true" outfielders whilst The Jays have 6 Catchers who could be used as trade bait. 39-year old Oliver Trana is the lone First Baseman, and he isn't getting any younger. Bottom Line The glory days of the late 90s and early Naughties are behind them. 4th. ![]() The Knights narrowly avoided the dreaded drop last year, despite spending most of last season sitting in 19th place holding off a quick return to the First Division. Unfortunately, it looks like much of the same is to come. Strengths Catcher Maximilian Asther joins from Hollydale and will be a real offensive standout whilst rookie Reliever Hal Pearce may even see himself making the occasional start. Rob Hornyold went 10-13 on the mound from 34 starts last year and needs to continue his form into 2012 to help Saffron. Watch out for rookie Right Fielder Lothar Jänne who has a bright future ahead and may even feature this year. Weaknesses Saffron's Infield is appalling, whilst Center and Right Field is not much better. Closer Hayden Warwick blew three saves from 34 opportunities last year, something that he can't afford to do too often this year. SP Tye Mansfield signed from Blanchester in the off-season but struggled in the Super League, posting an ERA of 5.14 which included just 93 strikeouts. Bottom Line It's a toss-up between the Knights and Tempest Lake for the final relegation spot, but I think Saffron may have just enough to survive for another year. 17th. ![]() The Doggies enter their 11th year in the top flight having dropped considerably over the last 2. They finished 6th in 2009 before finishing 9th the following year and struggling to a disappointing 12th in 2011; their worst finish since joining the Super League in 2001. Strengths Young Jarod Bull is one of the best young pitchers in the league and will need to stay fit and healthy to keep the Bulldogs away from the relegation zone. Catcher Carl Helland has declined in the last three years, but is still a threat with the bat, whilst Third Baseman Sepp Hunkoos smacked 33 Homers last year and will be a major concern for the opposition. 21-year old Kieran Raddle batted .296 last year and will be a certainty to bat in the three-hole in 2012. Weaknesses Both First Base and Shortstop are major weaknesses in the line-up whilst rookie Shaun Nilsmark is expected to start LF this season which is a big worry. Rookie Derek Kaipainen has a great future predicted for the right-hander, but he is going to find 2012 a tough year. Ylermi Rosberg started 11 games last year and lost 6 of them winning 2, as his ERA blew-out to 7.03 which included an appalling WHIP of 2.14. Bottom Line I like the Dogs. They have some great young prospects coming through, and a good mix of talent. If injuries go against them the Bulldogs could soon see the drop zone looming. 15th. ![]() The Sharks gained promotion in 2009 along with fierce rivals the Grenada Kings; the latter of which has done arguably better in the two years. The Sharks aren't to be sneezed at though, as they improved to 7th place last year, an improvement of 8 places from the previous year. Strengths Saphire Coast has an impressive pitching staff for a team not considered a "Big 5". SP Brian Wicksted has shown consistency on the mound along with young Bradley Doidge who could surprise many this season. James Reakes joins from the Newport Royals having spent 2007-2009 with Lyndbank, accruing an ERA of 3.60 from 95 starts with a 43-34 win-loss record. Byron Fyson has joined from New Auckland whilst Thomas Burnell joins from Grenada to plug the gap left by Lewknor who went to the Titans. The Sharkies also have three amazing blue-chip prospect Relievers in Saku Pursglove, Santtu Pyatt and Nick Tjarnqvist. Weaknesses The team is just 34-strong, which could be a problem in defense as 18 players are pitchers. The outfield is atrocious, with Blair Bond the best and the Right Fielder only batted .248 last year. 39-year old Viggo Strand will start at 1B but when he retires the Sharks don't have anyone ready to replace him. Bottom Line The Sharks-Kings rivalry will continue this season as both teams will make very good bids to push into the Big 5, but the Kings are slightly better on paper. 7th. ![]() The Skyhawks have a major concern to deal with, and time is fast running out. They have no offense. 2011 was a good year for the Lakers finishing 11th; but they were ranked 17th in Offense. Only the pitching staff saved them from a dismal year. Strengths Ewan Hyling has a new face to help on the mound with Nicky Randolf who joins from Angelsea whilst Vic Penrose and Teuvo Utriainen will continue to do a fine job as Relievers. Closer Logan Edney has joined from Shettleston where he has spent his entire career. Last year in the Third Division, he posted an ERA of just 0.61 for 34 saves. He played for the Blue Sox when they were in the Super League in his rookie year aged 23 and started 7 games for an ERA of 3.22 from 142 IP. 2B Carlton Eddison is the lone bat, leading the team in batting average last year (.293). Weaknesses The loss of Jacob Heathcote to the Titans has left a huge gap in the outfield, and a good batter to boot. With the exception of Second Base, no one is likely to step up and hit for big numbers. 40-year old John Wetterstrum is most likely in his final year having been released from Grenada at the end of 2011 and he is expected to play clean-up. Jack Dobson joined from Jaxon City and is expected to make the rotation which is another concern. Bottom Line Tempest Lake's 6 year stay in the top flight could well come to an end this year, which is a shame as the pitching staff is more than capable to stay in the Super League. 18th. ![]() Tranent has cracked the top 10 the last two seasons and could finish in a similar position this year. They may even finish higher up, if their youngsters step-up. Strengths Nigel Adderley is a huge signing for the team, after snatching him from Tempest Lake and is expected to start Opening Day. Dwayne Broadley, two years Adderley's senior is another competent Starter. 3B Cain Wurfel hit .331/.415/.450 to lead the team in batting average and LF Abraham Bakke posted similar numbers placing the 25-year old in the cleanup spot ahead of Wurfel. Tranent's relieving squad are all young and raw, but if given time could develop into one of the best bullpens in the league. Just don't expect miracles this year. Weaknesses First Base is woefully bad, whilst Kevin Rasmussen at Catcher might do more harm then good. He batted .294/.440/.433 in the First Division last year. Two rookies hold outfield positions (RF Ancel Makk and CF Lars-Bjorn Shufflebottom) whilst 17-year old rookie Clive Colclough will be Designated Hitter to start off the season. Bottom Line Tranent has one of the best group of prospects in the league, and could well be around for a few years yet. As for now, Tranent will have to make do with another Top 10 finish. 9th. ![]() The Northern State team started slow last year and the month of August knocked the Vipers out of contention for the title. A few signings in the off-season could be blessings in disguise...but I doubt it. Strengths Salmund Ødegård led the team on the mound last year, but he has slipped to 5th in the rotation with the signing of Brandon Blenkinson from Megopolis with Theodor Mehler looking much improved during Spring Training. The Vipers easily have the best outfield in the league with Simon Andresson, Chris Raddle and Johannes Hjerstedt (who led the team in everything in 2011) sitting in Right, Center and Left respectively. 43-year old Domenic Loetzsch is still going strong, and will be the teams Designated Hitter again. Last year he batted .292/.404/.493; not bad for the oldest player in the league. Even the infield is great, with 1B Troy Brusnahan signing from Port Redhill to replace Lester Willets who had trouble striking out far too much last year. Weaknesses Things aren't all sunshine and rainbows in the desert, Closer Rob dejong is not good enough for a Big 5 side such as Vizhune; last year he blew 4 save opportunities. Backup at Shortstop is poor, with Phil Zebedee and Liam Tyley being bad alternatives should injury strike Marco Hassett. 3B Finlay Toms couldn't hit a Home Run to save his life; in 8 years he has hit just 8, including a three year stint with Hollydale in the First Division. Catcher Keith Cutler has big shoes to fill should Henry Vance go down with injury. Bottom Line Despite my complaints, the Vipers are still an excellent squad, and are great to watch for offense alone. Expect to see these guys a lot on the TV over the coming months. 2nd. Cash confident of Dyce turnaround ![]() A massive turnaround in playing staff has given Dyce Whalers Manager Charlie Cash (pictured) the squad he wants to not only avoid relegation but secure the teams future in the top flight. Cash, who is in his fourth year as GM at Dyce - including three as Bench Coach - was appointed Manager in 2009 with the aim of keeping the Whalers in the Super League. Hopes of finishing his second year outside of the drop zone were dashed as Cash's side dropped games against teams around them under the guidance of the 60-year-old Manager, and despite winning their last 6 of their remaining 10 games they finished the season in a disappointing 19th place; 3 games away from safety. But having busily spent the summer searching free agency - 15 newcomers have arrived at Metropolitan Park - Cash is happy with a pre-season build-up that has included an impressive 14-5 Spring Training record which included victories over Megopolis, New Auckland and Independence City. "The squad is now my squad, which is what I've always wanted," he told KSTV. "I'm very happy that the team's owner has allowed me to make these changes and I'm delighted to be working with these players. The new lads have all bedded in really well. It's always a worry whether people will get on and quickly get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses, but they're gelling very well and the spirit is already really good". After a good pre-season the Whalers head into the new campaign with an away series against Lexington starting tomorrow, when Cash will be hoping that the gelling and the spirit will come together to produce his new-look team's first win of the season. If so he will look to build steadily towards safety, avoiding the roller-coaster of 2010 - after seeing his side collect 20 wins from 47 games at the end of May, the Princeton team then slumped to just 40 wins in the remaining 115 games. "You learn from experiences like what happened to us the last time we were in this division" said Cash. "And that's where I'm at right now. Last season's been and gone, it's about the present and the future and we're a team with one aim this season; survival". That aim is avoiding the last 3 spots and Cash is hoping that Dyce, the biggest team in the state of Princeton, can follow in the footsteps of another big team who found it quite a task to battle their way to back-to-back survival seasons. Cash said: "It's not easy for any team, however big, to stay in the Super League because it's a tough division. Look at the Hollydale Islanders, they have battled bravely the last few years and are still going strong. We're a similar team to the Islanders, both having gone down after recent stints in the top flight. It would be great to emulate Hollydale and prove we can match it with the big boys. The Super League season starts tomorrow - Good Friday - with newly promoted Nyhaven North Stars facing a difficult task when they clash with current Champions the New Auckland Warlocks at Sadaki Stadium in the afternoon game. The nationally televised evening game between Rothes and Independence City is the stand-out of the 7pm starts. Check local guides for broadcast games in your area. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Friday April 6th 2012 - OPENING DAY!
![]() ![]() Nyhaven kicked off the season in spectacular fashion and had a big reason to rejoice after a 20-year absence from the Super League, upsetting the defending champions, 8-5. Henrik Walfridsson picked up the win in his first Super League start after striking out 5 and conceding 3 runs from 5.2 IP. LF Kasper Lippert (3-5, HR, 4 RBI) hit a 3-run homer to right field to break the 1-1 tie before rookie Heyg Kankkunen (1-5, HR, Run) hit a solo blast to end Li Dryden's game after just 2.2 IP; he gave up 5 runs on 5 hits, striking out 2. New Auckland hadn't lost an opener since 2008 whilst Nyhaven becomes the first newly promoted team in Super League history to lead the standings on the first day. ![]() ![]() Nigel Adderley threw 8 scoreless innings, yielding just 4 hits as he struck-out 10 in Tranent's 4-0 thumping of Port Redhill. Abraham Bakke (2-4, Run, 2 RBI) led the charge for Tranent, which included a solo homer in the 8th off Reliever Tommy Cusack. LF Valtteri Laakkonen (2-3) was the best for the visitors as Port Redhill failed to get anything going on offense - reaching base just 5 times. This is Tranent's first Opening Day victory and shutout win since 2008, when they coincidentally defeated Port Redhill, 1-0. ![]() ![]() A walk-off single from Marten Wilander (2-5, 2 RBI, 1 LOB) gave Lexington the spoils as they defeated fellow newcomers Dyce, 5-4. The Whalers seemed to have wrapped up the win with a Home Run from lead-off hitter Jai Upchurch (1-4, HR, K, 5 LOB) and a 4-4 performance from RF Visa Salonen. Jamie Orgee (8 IP, 2 H, 2 R, K) had earlier limited the Wasps to just two hits before Kai Addison blew the save with DH Alphonso Mäyrä (1-4, Run), Olle Hanssen (1-3, Run, BB) and Iestyn Hodgeson (1-3, Run, 2 RBI, BB) all finding base safely before Wilander hit a two-out single for Lexington's first win of the campaign. ![]() ![]() Nicky Loxton picked up his first win of the season in the tantalizing clash between Rothes and the Cardinals where the Blue Jays finished 3-0 winners. Loxton struck out 8, restricting the home side to just 7 hits for teams first Opening Day shutout in team history. Bryan Gilder threw a complete game in the loss, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, striking out 4. RF Alfie Odhe (1-4, Run, 2 RBI, 2 K) hit a 2-run smash to right field in the first inning and Ron Felgate (1-4, RBI, K) hit an RBI double in the 5th to complete the scoring for Rothes. SS Tuomas Korkiakangas (2-4) was the best of the Cards, whilst Karin Hagen went hit-less in 4 at-bats, leaving 4 runners on base through the game. ![]() ![]() Young hurler Jarod Bull pitched a 1-run, 4-hit shutout as the Bulldogs shocked the Vipers in an 8-1 demolition. Brandon Blenkinson was pulled from the game after just 4.2 innings as the Vipers were out-hit 11-4 with Johannes Hjertstedt scoring the lone run on a first ball homer in the 7th; he was one of only 4 hitters to reach base this evening. LF Shaun Nilsmark went 3-4 with 2 Runs whilst Chris Bleazzard hit a 3-run, 2-out triple in the 5th to further extend the Bulldogs lead. ![]() ![]() A grand slam home run from Axel Beresford (1-4, 2 Runs, 4 RBI) reversed the fortunes of Saffron on the 3rd as they took the lead and held on for a 7-3 victory. The result was another kick in the guts for Ridgewich Falls who lost ace pitcher Valio Jokela in the first inning to an injury that is likely to rule him out for up to 5 months. Saku Dulihanty (1-4, Run) had given the Pride a 2-0 lead when he smashed a homer to left field after Hemming Cajander (1-4, Run) had earlier singled. DH Harold Pagnam (1-4, Run, RBI, 2 K) completed the rout for Saffron in the 9th with a solo blast. 2B Todd Thornhill will be ruled out for a couple of weeks after tweaking his arm during the first inning in his professional debut. ![]() ![]() Megopolis needed 11 innings to defeat Lyndbank after leading 7-2 at one point before edging the Phoenix, 9-8. Ross Myatt (2-4, Run, 4 RBI, BB, 2 K) hit a grand slam in 5th to extend the Titans lead before Lyndbank slowly closed the gap and levelled the scores in the 9th with a two-run homer from Abraham Friggeberg (2-5, 2 Runs, 2 RBI, BB) to force extra innings. Stig Jakobsen (3-6, 2 Runs, 2 RBI) hit a solo shot that traveled right of center and Rasmus Nortstrom got the save in an epic Opening Day game. Axel Mattiasson (3-6, Run, 2 RBI) had given the Phoenix the lead in the 3rd with a solo effort before Frank Weld (1-5, RBI, 2 K) hit an RBI single to regain the lead for Megopolis half an inning later.
