Do you ever feel cursed?

I simply can't catch a break. 1917 Detroit Tigers. I lose Ty Cobb for the year only 2 weeks into the season. I plug along, staying right around .500. George Burns is having a decent season and whammo he's gone for 4 weeks. Then I begin the month of June by losing Sam Crawford for 3 weeks. Again, I stay right around the .500 mark thanks to Harry Heilmann and Bobby Veach. Burns returns to the lineup and a week later I welcome back Sam Crawford. I'm ready to roll, right? Wrong, the very day I get Crawford back, Bobby Veach goes down for 3 months(the season). UGH!

Yes, many times.

Presently playing every game (one pitch mode) with the default MLB2012 League with the Blue Jays. I am fighting with Boston as a wild card(clinched)/AL East Championship. I am using the modern injury settings and had to deal with a lot of them during the season. Now only one week before the playoffs and I lost 2 of my main players to injuries for 3 weeks.

Grrrrrrrrr

Love this game.

Me either. Injuries are part of the game.

I don't think I'd ever felt cursed before this season. Coming into the All Star break, my DL included:

- #1 pitcher (injured last season, out til August)
- Perennial All Star Right Fielder
- Starting Left Fielder
- Starting Center Fielder
- Backup corner outfielder/1st baseman/power bat
- Perennial All Star Shortstop (due back for the playoffs should be manage)
- Closer (out for the year)

Somehow, my team managed to keep its head above water and in the chase, plus my young first baseman, who carried the team on his back, got himself an All Star berth. Things were looking up with all three my outfielders coming off the DL and a trade bolstering my bullpen, but I've since suffered injuries to

- Starting Left Fielder (again, he'll be back in September)
- Swingman (ERA < 2, done for the year)
- Defensive replacement outfielder (done for the year)
- Starting 3rd baseman (back in September)
- The aformentioned young all star 1st baseman (back for the playoffs)
- Perennial all star center fielder (again, done for the year)
- Setup reliever (back mid-September)
- Platoon catcher (back for the playoffs)

Adding insult to injury, my ace re-injured himself on a rehab assignment and is now done for the year.

My team is heading into September one game above .500 and 6 out of first. I'm cautiously optimistic that if we can stay close when half my team comes off the DL we might be able to make a run at it. If we can reach the playoffs, I think we may have a prayer of actually winning it.

Closing in on the end of the 1913 season with me, Washington Senators with a single game lead over Philadelphia Athletics. Six games to go, three with Philadelphia and 3 with Boston. I get swept by Philly with my aces on the mound, Walter Johnson, Christy Mahtewson, and Jim St Vrain. First game shut out by Smoking Joe Wood, and it went down hill from there. I did sweep Boston but finished 2 game behind Athletics. They dominated my all season, 15-7.

The Athletics have been incredible in my replay. I think they have 5 World Series rings now and they are in the lead as of July 1917. I have trades set to very low/very hard so there aren't that many trades. This combined with the reserve clause has allowed for teams to remain strong over time. St Louis is just starting to emerge in the NL.

You're not cursed, but OOTP does not handle injuries correctly. There should not be just 5 settings. Normal (OOTP Classic) still has too many significant injuries and low is too low. I'm thinking of trying 2 months of Normal and 4 of Low or something like that.

One thing you could try is to use the low setting, but increase player fatigue. When I started my league in 1906 there weren't enough players to use the normal injury setting, so I just upped the fatigue. For me OOTP Classic works just fine.

I feel your pain with injuries. I had crafted one of the best pitching staffs in the league and was on a great winning streak when two of my best starters suffered injuries along with my star CF! After that, my team was on an express elevator to Hades.

In real life, a study revealed that injuries are concentrated from spring training to the all star break and then a big drop off in injuries. So I use the higher modern realistic setting till the all star break and then the lower classic setting after the break.

Do you have a lot of season ending injuries this way?

On a few separate occasions, I've lost 3-5 players during the playoffs to long term injuries when I play on modern realistic. Which was probably a bug that was fixed a few times, but it got really annoying when it happened two straight years in a row.

And for the biggest heartbreak, it was when I brought the mariners to the world series two years in a row and lost in 7 games both times to the washington nationals. Luckily after that i won the next one and a few after that and the nats didnt make the playoffs for several years.

Funny how things work.

In my last season my team was held together with chicken wire and chewing gum as player after player went down. There may have been three weeks all season in which I had my best guys playing at the same time. Included in those injuries were my #1 starter who made 9 starts all season, and one of my best hitters. Despite all of this we won the division.

This year through mid-June I've had one player on the DL. We are 4 games under .500 in third place.

Go figure.

My 5-Star closer was having a rough August, 2 straight blown saves and was walking the lineup every time out. I'm in the late stages of a blowout win and I decide that since "immersion is everything," that I'd be a life a RL manager and give him some work to help build his confidence.

Walks the 1st 2 guys, double, suddenly a blowout becomes a little more dramatic. Ends up with the bases loaded and 2 out, gets the last batter to ground out the 3B, game over....wait, he's injured on the play and they have to take him out. Ruptured tendon in his finger, out for the rest of the season.

Winning!

For the last 3 seasons, I entered the playoffs as the number 1 or 2 team. In each of the first two games of the playoffs, I suffered a significant number of injuries. Season 1: I lost my number 1 starter and 6 regular offensive players in the first 2 games of the playoffs. I was stuck playing a pitcher in the OF.

The same pattern continued in the following season, althoguh I only lost my top 2 starters (during their playoff starts, of course) and my top 2 offensive players.

In the 3rd season, I rested my players over the last 2 weeks of the season, basically playing them everyother day. Same results. Lost 2 of my top 3 starters and 3 offensive players (one starter lost on the last day of the season). The players did not have an injury rating as fragile.

Seems like a theme

Never really felt cursed.. Just have a couple things I can count on...

Since 1985, the odd years my team forgets how to win.. The even number years we make the playoffs then forget how to win..

Oh yeah and I'll lose Dwight Gooden for a year once every 5 years

Cursed might be a too strong of a word... I am only in my 3rd season with my current fictional league... But after a great 100+ win season I was just swept in the first round... then I let three free agents walk with the idea that my strong farm system would replace them. I just ran the "top minor league systems" report... Towards the end of last season I was ranked 3rd out of 24 teams... but now I've somehow completely bottomed out and the game ranks me 22nd. My #6 and #9 overall prospects are now ranked #69 and #84... The AAA players that looked to be ready for big league success now look like 4A players... I just got hit with the arbitrator ruling in favor of the players about nine times over... It's a weak free agent class this year, the lone silver lining, but my budget dollars have evaporated. I think I'm going to have to empty out the few promising prospects I have left to try and replace my departed free agents... My league's version of the Evil Empire, the Flint Vandals, still haven't won it all... but they're spending well over double what I am and continue to cockblock my path to the World Series...

Damn, I love to hate how this silly random number generator can depress the hell out of me...
