huge criticism.... or a moot point

What I have here is either huge criticism or a moot point because I don't undersand.

If I am correct:

1. Ball locations are specific to each park, since each park is different.
2. The game with default ball locations for default stadiums.
3. This means that when you add correct stadiums your ball locations will be off, causing walls to be where they're not supposed to be, etc.
4. The only way to correc this is to take every single ballpark you want to use and relocate what appears to be about 50 locations per stadium.

That's a ton of work just to get a game to play correctly

Is there a way to make this porcess easier? Is there a way to include the data as though the actual stadium was there (even though actual stadiums can't be shipped wiht the game)

Or am I just misunderstanding the concept all together?

Can you please change point #2 to a complete sentence? I'm not sure what you mean.

This has been an issue for awhile even before I got heavily into OOTP. It would be nice if we could edit the stadium.dat file easier so people wouldn't have to change every location for every new league. I only set my wall depths at dont bother with the rest.

Well to put it simply the game cannot ship with a default set of stadium pictures since they would need to licensed. That means there can be no default settings that will work with all stadiums since we all use different pictures or stadium mods from different creators.

I don't use ball flight but the last time I checked most modders included stadium settings with their stadium pics. If not then yes you will have to make the changes.

To me the easy way is to do it the first time you visit each stadium and yes you will have to do them twice if you have day and night pictures unless they are from the exact same angle.

There is a button in the action menu that lets you copy ball locations so you only have to edit the day park and can copy those changes to the night park so you don't have to do them twice.

If you are doing the traditional mlb league, there are mods that you can importto save you some time. If you get into the fictional stadiums then you will have to do them manually.

AFAIK this doesn't effect the sim results. The game uses ballpark factors for sim. I also turn off the animated ball so it's a non issue for me.

It's this way with all the text based sims. Puresim. Mogul. There are tons of fan based park pics so there's no way for this to be done automatically and it's really a pain.

But with the ootp text being so good I see no reason to use the ball flights. They don't look good and they're not needed for anything. (my opinion of course)

At its current state, I agree they don't look good at all.

Markus was going to try to spice it up a bit. I would love to see the players move around and make plays.

OOTP 13 will have an improved ballpark import / export, which includes stuff like pictures and correct locations. So, the MLB all-in-one installer will likely include real ballpark backgrounds with proper ball locations. I am sure the mod makers will utilize this feature.

Excellent.. the ball flights are really choppy, at least for me.. would love to see it cleaned up so it flows like a real baseball being hit to different parts of the field. Would add some suspense, especially if the pbp followed the ball flight.

I've commented on this before. You need to be careful presenting text and graphics, ball flight, at the same time. If the ball is flying at the same time you're reading the text you can't do both. You can't put one eye on the ball and the other on the words or you're reading and you vaguely have some idea of the ball flying. Or you're going back and forth which isn't good. So You need to do one of two things:

1. Have only one or the other (text or graphics) but not both.

2. Do them sequentially. Put in some preliminary text to the play. Then show the ball flight (or illustrate a strikeout / walk / pass ball / steal / whatever / with text in a popup box). Then more text finishing up the play. The text needs to be in a popup box in the middle of the screen and not at the bottom otherwise you're moving your eyes back and forth constantly which isn't good. I've done the eye movement back and forth with other sims and it really gets nerve wracking after a while.

Of course the best way is to have little men on the screen acting out whatever the play is. These men are not player controlled. They simply show the play. They move and you see the ball, where it goes during the play. This would be very cool but would take a lot of time to program I think.

I agree.. and would settle on what's already there (face and player name) just moving around a bit tracking the ball.
