Its 1994. You're starting a Major League Baseball League. You're looking for a qualified commissioner. He is somebody who knows the game. He can come from inside or outside of the game. Who do you hire? The only person it can't be is Bud Selig.

Bob Costas would be good in '94, '04, or '14. We'd be so lucky to have him serve as commish.

In the tradition of Fay Vincent, you could pick an east-coast academic with a passion for baseball. I'd suggest Stephen Jay Gould:

ok on many levels I can see the logic here but I can't help but think his first act as commish would be to pardon himself and to get himself elected into the hall. Not that I don't think he deserves it on his stats but just let me add he knew what he was doing when he did it.
