Question RE Pitching Lineup
On the Team > Pitching page, how do you properly setup pitchers' roles?
Starting Rotation - I'm guessing use your top 5 SPs (for 5-man rotation). What then should you do with Spot Starters? Middle Reliever - I'm guessing use your top 4 MRs. Closer - Use your top CL. What should you do with Mop-up Relievers, and Setup Relievers? thanks |

Well, as I am sure you know, there is no pat answer to that question.
Normally I use my two best relief pitchers as my setup men. The idea being this is going to be the pitchers you send in in the 8th inning when your starter just gave up a base hit and a walk and you need somebody to get you out of the jam. For the mop up pitcher I usually pick a middle reliever who has pretty high stamina but not much else. The idea being that if you are 8 runs up or 8 runs down, you can use him to eat up some innings and protect your bullpen. The spot starter is kind of the same reasoning for me. Typically he will be my 6th starter. But I don't use that slot that often except for when you expand to the 40 man roster. Like I say, this is just my reasoning, your mileage my vary. |

After thinking about your question and the fact you posted it in the 'New to the Game' section I should add.
You don't HAVE to fill in all of those slots. You can leave them empty. Back in the 70's teams typically carried 5 starts and 5 relief pitchers. So your bullpen might look like 3 middle relievers, one setup man and your closer with all the other bullpen slots left empty. |

I tend to skip my #4 SP in my 130 game solo EBL leagues as often as possible so i dont have a spot starter in that league. I do use spot starter in Online leagues in case a guy is tired, |

So even if i have all the MP set the AI will use who it wants when i sim? From my experiance the other roles are set to but change during the season due to player devolpment as even a little change can affect a picther being better then another. Letting the ai set up your lineup it will put the best RP as closer, the next 2 best as setup men and then the rest as MP. Mop up gets set when the MP are full and will be the worst RP of the bunch. Spot starter is used as a 7th starter if you have a 6 man rotation, so any picther that has the skill to start but not enough to make the roation. I find the ai will stick to those for the most part |

Yeah, I don't have a great knowledge of baseball. I bought OOTP12 when I found out they were making a hockey sim as a way of supporting that project, but I find I'm liking OOTP.
Anyhow thanks all for this info! I sim most games since I don't know enough to delve into the details. So I'm going to set the lineup based on your info and then if the AI handles it differently in sim games, at least I know how it's supposed to be done. Another question now - How many SPs and how many MRs should I have on the 25 and 40 man rosters for a MLB team? I'm sure this depends on strategy but I mean roughly. Thanks. |
