The WBC has responded to claims by former super flyweight champion Tomas “Gusano” Rojas that he was threatened and forced by WBC President Jose Sulaiman to fight in Thailand Suriyan Por Chok Chai under very dubious conditions where he lost his title.
The attitude of Tomas “Gusano” Rojas is very regrettable The World Boxing Council regrets that its former super flyweight world champion, Tomas “Gusano” Rojas, remarked some things regarding the WBC, due to the loss of his title, such as the fact that he was forced to go to Thailand, as the WBC does not force anybody to do anything that is not stated in the WBC Rules and Regulations; from former champion Rojas, the WBC did not even receive a thank you note for the numerous opportunities he was given as a challenger and as a champion. Rojas traveled to Thailand to face a fighter who was ranked #13 in the Flyweight division, and reclassified # 8 in the Superflyweight division. “Gusano” Rojas went to such country because he received the highest purse paid in Thailand in the small divisions that we know about, $ 180,000 USD, tax-free, which were paid by the promoter; he also received the live TV rights in Mexico; he also received, without any cost, 2 ring corner pads for his own publicity; in addition the aforementioned facts, he received six airplane tickets, two of which were business class ones. And as if it were not enough, the promoter signed two options on the contract….. The WBC does not know about other conditions that were even similar to this contract which was exaggeratedly in favor of a champion, in the 35 years that Jose Sulaiman has been its President. Sulaiman is a crazy nut case!!!!!

Yuriorkis Gamboa
By Karl Freitag
Undefeated former WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa and former WBO junior featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon commented on their September 10 showdown in the Adrian Phillips Ballroom at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall Gamboa: I think he’s a very good fighter, very good boxer. But I’m not here to just talk. We’ll show it on September 10th in the ring and we’ll go on from there. On being stripped of his WBA belt: I feel sad that they took the belt away from me. When I fought Solis it was for the belt, and now I don’t have a belt but it’s not about the belt. It’s to see who is the best out there. Ponce De Leon: I’m ready to fight at 126, 127, 135, whatever. I just want the big fights. August 29th, 2011 Good for you Yuriorkis Gamboa! Tell them where they can shove their belt!

I noticed that PBF and Ortiz are fighting for the WBC welterweight belt, which Ortiz won from Berto. So is Floyd paying the sanctioning fees this time? His stance in the Mosley fight when he didn't pay them and so couldn't challenge for the title gave me a bit of admiration for him so I hope he does that again. Would be good if all the top fighters did it. We'd then see how long these bogus organisations would last for.

Oh Hum!!!!!!
By Gabriel F. Cordero
The WBA World Championships Committee has declared that interim flyweight champ Juan Carlos Reveco is now a champion in recess. Reveco has 180 days to resolve a dispute with his manager Osvaldo Rivero. The 180 days is retroactive to June 10, 2011, when Reveco beat Jean Piero Perez. August 31st, 2011 By Gabriel F. Cordero The WBA has declared that bantamweight “super” champion Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno to be champion in recess. This allows him to fight, but not defend the WBA world title. The champion in recess status will be lifted when the problems are resolved with his manager Roberto Grimaldo. Grimaldo and Moreno are embroiled in a legal battle for the validity of their contract. Moreno, who recently signed a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions had announced that he is prepared to “defend his crown” against Eric Morel to November 5 in the United States. August 30th, 2011 By Joe Koizumi Japanese southpaw Koki Kameda (26-1, 16 KOs), 118, barely kept his belt as he floored previously unbeaten Mexican David De La Mora (23-1, 16 KOs), 118, in the third, but became inexplicably cautious in later rounds and barely earned a hairline unanimous verdict (114-113, 115-113 and 115-112) over twelve lousy rounds on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. (More to come) August 31st, 2011 By Joe Koizumi Slick-punching Japanese speedster Tomonobu Shimizu (19-3-1, 9 KOs), 115, captured the WBA super-flyweight belt as he utilized his faster footwork and longer reach to dominate early and late rounds, though losing middle rounds, to eke out a split but popular decision (115-113 twice and 114-116) over defending champ Hugo Cazares (35-7-2, 25 KOs), 115, a switch-hitting Mexican, over twelve hard-fought and gory sessions on Wednesday in Tokyo, Japan. (More to come) August 31st, 2011

A new opponent for Erik Morales
A new opponent for Erik Morales on September 17th in Las Vegas will be announced tomorrow. Morales was originally slated to face Lucas Matthysse for the vacant WBC super lightweight, but Matthysse pulled out with an illness. The WBC is desperately looking for a foe with prestige and quality for Morales, so that he does not lose the opportunity to fight for a fourth world title.
September 9th, 2011 Hello!!!! How about a fight with the #1 WBC title challenger!!!!!!!!!

LAS VEGAS -- Junior welterweight Pablo Cesar Cano knows what he's up against, and he does not seem to care.
In fact, he embraces it. "I'm strong, and I am ready, and every professional boxer wants this," said Cano. "Trust me, I want this. I'm very, very hungry for this." At the tender age of 21 years old, Cano will be fighting 34-year-old, three-division titlewinner Erik Morales on scarcely a week's notice, in what will be his debut in Las Vegas, and only his third fight at 140 pounds -- the highest weight at which he has ever competed. Cano's father and trainer, Pablo Sr., will share instructional duties with veteran corner man Rudy Perez, which may or may not lead to confusion come crunch time. In addition, Morales has more than twice as many victories and double the number of knockouts as Cano. Having fought in Las Vegas some 15 times, Morales will no doubt be the crowd favorite. But don't tell Cano he's an underdog. Cano is bidding to win the WBC's vacant title belt against Morales on the undercard of a main event featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KOs) against WBC welterweight titleholder Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KOs) on HBO Pay Per View from the MGM Grand on Saturday night. Cano was called in to replace hard-hitting Lucas Matthysse (28-2, 26 KOs) after Matthysse came down with a viral infection that hindered his preparation. "I was preparing myself for another opponent, and then, they told me about this fight and I said, 'Okay, I'll go,'" said Cano. "This is like my trampoline. This is the jumping off point of my career." Morales (51-7, 35 KOs) scored his first professional victory with a second-round stoppage of Jose Orejel in March of 1993 when Cano (22-0-1, 17 KOs) was only three years old, and captured his initial world title when Cano was 7 by knocking out Daniel Zaragoza. "I know that he was champion of the world at the age of 21 years old himself, and that that was against Zaragoza," said Cano. "I didn't even think about fighting Erik Morales at that time because I was very young, but now, it's my opportunity of a lifetime at the age of 21 years old just as he was." One of five Mexican fighters to have earned title belts in three divisions, along with Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera and Fernando Montiel., Morales can become the first of his countrymen to earn a fourth crown over the course of as many divisions. Morales, of Tijuana, Mex., is perhaps most recognized for his battles with Barrera (66-7, 43 KOs), of Mexico City, having lost twice in a trilogy that ranks with prestige and status. Cano has been cast as the replacement for Barrera in the Mexican rivalry, and the youngster believes that he is up to the task. Cano is being trained by his father and Perez, the latter of whom worked with Barrera, and, most recently, with Marcos Maidana during Maidana's disputed victory over Morales in April. "I don't like to watch videos of my opponents, but I just know that everything can change in the ring, so I'm ready for anything in the ring," said Cano. "I'm prepared mentally and physically for this. This is the beginning of big things for me. I mean, this is a career opportunity." The problem, as far as I can see, is that the fighters themselves aren't prepared to disregard the alphabet belts. Most of, if not all of them, don't seem to realise how little value or prestige they now have as championships.
I don't really understand the way things work in regards to the sanctioning bodies and the fighters. I know the fighters have to pay a percentage of their fight purse to the organisation when they fight for the title (the sanctioning fee), but does the organisation do anything or provide anything in regards to the purse? Or is that all, 100% arranged by the promoters? But the promoters have relationships and "understandings" going with the organisations (eg. King and the WBC), so they are just as bad. Is it a case of not being able to get anywhere in the sport without the top promoters and the alphabet gang? |
