The way you bowl (pitch) is by hitting the ground. You use the bounce to make it harder to hit. Low bounce, high bounce...bounce which moves the ball sideways (for lack of a better expression).

The arm action is totally different. Your arm HAS to be straight...which makes it hard for high speeds to be met...but the top bowlers can read the mid 90mph.

Some of the slower bowlers are more cunning with the location of the bounce and direction. Reminds me of, say, Kirk Reuter. No speed, all location.

I wonder if has something to do with the US not having converted to the metric system.

Crabster, I'm from near Cambridge.

And another difference between pitching and bowling is that it's acceptable to hit the batsman, as long as the ball bounces first. In theory you're not trying to hit him, but in practice that's what happens a lot. You'll often see bowlers pitch the ball so short that it bounces up around the batsman's head...and if they get hit it's their fault not the bowlers.

Actually, Harry Wright, a member of the Hall of fame, was born in Sheffield and was ", at the age of 19, a professional cricketer for the Dragonslayers of New York City's St. George Cricket Club. " His brother George (also in the H of F) was born in Yonkers, NY, and was also an accomplished cricketer. Their dad was a professional cricketer as well, specially 'imported' at the time.

Naturally the first famous UK baseball player was from Sheffield (check out my user name, hint hint).

Another difference betwen the two sports: In baseball, the team in the field is the defending team. In cricket, the team at bat is defending. The bowler, with the ball, is a member of the attacking team (as with most other ball-playing sports, the team with the ball is the offense.)

For those Americans who are confused by the game of Cricket this should explain it in a nutshell.

Definition of Cricket

"You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out. When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in.

There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men are out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!"

That's all you need to know.

Aahh yes of course, but my memory of sports in the 1870's isn't so good. Naturally being from Sheffield you'd be used to looking back a long time for sporting success

If it was the only one, whom did they play against?

bmcg1709, I wondered how long it would take before someone posted that definition. If our U.S. friends were not already confused, they will be now!

Coming back to players with a cricket background making it in baseball, I mentioned in an earlier post seeing a game at the Oval [a cricket ground in London] a game between Red sox and Mets minor leaguers and as part of the festivities, they held a Home Run Derby with some famous cricketers participating. there were, in particular, 2 England international batsmen [batters!] - Alec Stewart and Graham Thorpe - and one fast bowler [pitcher!] - "Syd" Lawrence. In fact, the batters did very poorly, as they seemed to be concentrating too much on seeing the ball and executing technically perfect swings. Lawrence - a huge, muscular, guy, just swung the bat as hard as he could. Not surprisingly, he whiffed a lot, but when he connected, it went MILES!

They would have played against Blackpool, but they were already in the third division.

But surely, in 1857, Blackpool will have had Stanley Matthews playing for them - they can't have been that bad!
