![]() Monday April 8th, 1962 Nats Defeat O's In A.L. Opener 3-2 ![]() President Kennedy Throws Out Ceremonial First Pitch Washington, DC- With nearly 35,000 fans on hand, including President John F. Kennedy who threw out the ceremonial first pitch, the Washington Senators and Baltimore Orioles opened the American League season with a dandy of a ballgame, as Washington slipped past the Orioles by the score of 3-2 on a pinch hit 9th inning homer by Bob Schmidt. Starting pitcher Don Rudolph was tremendous for the Nats, allowing just 2 runs(1 earned) on 6 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts in the route going victory, while for Baltimore, veteran starter Robin Roberts allowed 2 runs on 8 hits over five and two thirds, he was not involved in the decision. O'Toole, Pinson Lead Reds To Victory Cincinnati- Over in the National League, things were not so close, as the Cincinnati Reds, led by SP Jim O'Toole and CF Vada Pinson, buried the visiting Pirates 8-2. Pinson was an offensive force throughout, going 3 for 4 with a walk, 4 RBI and a run scored, while on the mound, Jim O'Toole dominated the Buccos, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts in the complete game win. |

[SIZE=4][FONT=Book Antiqua] Rather than changing it up, I'm going to keep on with the Fightin' Phils, all the way through. The only difference will be the occasional newspaper report about milestone events and such. The Sporting News will return as well. Next up, the Phillies season preview, followed by hopefully a much better season than last.

The 1963 Philadelphia Phillies Season Preview
By Allen Lewis Philadelphia Inquirer Except in the all important pitching department, the Phillies have their best team in at least ten years. They have capable major league players to man all eight regular positions and as a group their defense, speed and power are all above average in the N.L. The injury to southpaw Dennis Bennett who may not pitch till June or later, was a serious blow and right now only Art Mahaffey can be counted on to start every fourth of fifth day and win. In the bullpen Jack Baldschun has established himself as one of the best. Behind this duo the mound situation is extremely cloudy. The bulk of the catching will again be done by Clay Dalrymple who proved himself last season. The only question about the infield is weather Ruben Amaro or Bobby Wine will be the first string shortstop. The problem may be solved by trading one of them for a much needed pitcher. Both are top flight glove man and more capable hitters than they showed last year. At first base Gene Mauch is looking for more from the bat of Roy Sievers, who didn't start hitting last year until June. Spelling the 36 year old Sievers will again be Frank Torre. Tony Taylor, greatly improved over 1961, will be the second baseman unless Cookie Rojas, a slick fielder obtained from the Reds, continues to hit as he did in the Puerto Rican League this past winter. The most important new face on the Phillies will be at third base where Don Hoak, obtained from Pittsburgh for Ted Savage, should give the outfit a lift. The best fielding third baseman the Phillies have had since Willie Jones was in his prime, Hoak is confident he can prove that last year was just one of those things and that he is still one of the game's top third sackers. A fiery type, Don's leadership qualities should also help. If Don Demeter, who played mostly at third last year; Tony Gonzalez and Johnny Callison continue the improvement they showed in 1962, the Phillies could have one of the best all-around outfields in baseball, and one that could easily produce 80 or more home runs. 1963 Philadelphia Phillies Roster Last edited by PhillieFever; 09-06-2011 at 11:43 AM. |

At![]() Connie Mack Stadium, Philadelphia, Pa. April 9th and 10th, 1963 Tuesday April 9th: Reds 4 Phillies 0 Here on opening day in Philadelphia, Reds hurler Jim Maloney was dominant if not a bit wild in his first start of the season, allowing just 5 hits and 6 walks while striking out 8 over 7 and two thirds innings of shutout ball, as the Reds blanked the Phillies in the opener 4-0. LF Frank Robinson led the Cincinnati attack, going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI doubles, while rookie RF Pete Rose also played well, going 1 for 3 with a triple, an RBI sac fly, and a run scored. WP: Jim Maloney(1-0) LP: Art Mahaffey(0-1) S: Jim Brosnan(1) HR: None Wednesday April 10th: Reds 4 Phillies 3 Home runs from Harry Bright and Johnny Edwards along with two more doubles from Frank Robinson was just too much for the Phillies offense to overcome, as Cincinnati once again took the win 4-3. Reds SP Joe Nuxhall was just good enough to get the win, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out 8 over 7 and two thirds innings pitched, Jim Brosnan once again picked up the save. For the Phillies, CF Tony Gonzalez had 2 hits including a homer and 2 RBI. WP: Joe Nuxhall(1-0) LP: Cal McLish(0-1) S: Jim Brosnan(2) HR: Phi, Tony Gonzalez(1) Cin, Harry Bright(1), Johnny Edwards(1) |

At![]() Sportsman's Park, St. Louis, Mo. April 13th and 14th, 1963 Saturday April 13th: Phillies 4 Cardinals 0 Catcher Clay Dalrymple doubled, homered and knocked in two, third sacker Don Hoak homered and knocked in two, and pitcher Art Mahaffey took care of the rest, as the Phillies picked up their first win of the season with a 4-0 shutout victory of the Cardinals. Mahaffey, scattered 8 hits and walked 3 while striking out 7 over 8 and a third scoreless innings, evening his record at 1-1. SP Chris Short had a bit of a tough outing for the Phils, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks with 2 strikeouts in 5 and a third innings pitched, but the relief was spectacular, with Dallas Green, Johnny Klippstein, and Ryne Duren holding the Redbirds scoreless over the final 3 and two thirds. WP: Chris Short(1-0) LP: Bob Gibson(0-1) S: Ryne Duren(1) HR: Phi, Tony Gonzalez(2) Sunday April 14th: Cardinals 7 Phillies 6 A four run 8th inning rally gave the Cardinals a 6-3 lead heading into the 9th inning, but pinch hitter Roy Sievers erased the deficit with one swing of the bat, smashing a 3 run game tying homer off of relief pitcher Diomedes Olivo. Given new life, the Phillies could not take advantage, as Bill White's RBI single in the bottom of the 9th gave the Cards the 7-6 win. WP: Sam Jones(1-0) LP: Jack Baldschun(0-1) HR: Phi, Roy Sievers(1) |

Bad news guys. When going from 1962 to 1963, I decided to go to a 1 year recalc, but somehow when doing this I screwed up the ratings for a lot of players, for example. Al Downing is rated 4/8/5 with 2 stamina, when he really should be 15/17/8 with 20 stamina. So consider this dead. I'm not sure where I'm headed next, but look for a new thread sometime soon.
