Randy, it would be so easy to poke some misc fun at the QB or the shooter, but since I'll be blind in 5-10 yrs anything I say would come out too insensitive.

Would be cool if OOTP followed up with a storyline or two of this guy's progress through the minors and maybe even major league career. Not sure if OOTP is that advanced in its storyline telling though.

It isn't, unfortunately. But it's a cool idea!

Probably the best deaf player ever was Paul Hines, but he was not a mute and did not get the "dummy" tag. It's hard to tell how severe Hines' hearing loss was, but it seems to have been pretty bad, although I've seen one comment to the effect that his hearing problem was worse when he didn't want to listen to what was being said to him than when he did.

The most prominent mute player before Hoy was Edward "Dummy" Dundon, who preceded Hoy at the Ohio School for the Deaf and went on to pitch for Columbus at the major league level and Atlanta and probably other clubs in the minors.

There was a frequently reprinted newspaper item about Dundon being fined for disputing an umpire's call by emphatic gesticulation to show what he thought of it. People were amused to learn that even when a ball player can't talk, he can still argue with an umpire.

A couple corrections: Dummy Hoy was not responsible for the hand signals, and Hugh Daily's "20 strikeout" game was actually 19 plus an uncaught third strike, which didn't count as a K according to the scoring rules of the time.

Did ya read the link I posted? It talks about Hoy and why Balls and Strikes became indicated by hand signals.

The center fielder on the semi-pro team I played on was deaf. His best friend was the left fielder and they were very good at communicating while playing.

I remember some of the teams didnt know he was deaf for a few seasons.

Indeed there is. It's the Delaware School for the Deaf. Fine program there from what my fiance tells me.

Christina School District - STERCK SCHOOL, DELAWARE SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

There are no fictional schools in OOTP for USA schools.
