Historical Players not rating as in real life
Hi,
as some of you would know, I know very little about baseball, although I am slowly learning and am really enjoying OOTP12, however I'm seeing some weird ratings issues with some of the historical players whom from my albeit limited knowledge presumed would be locks to select if they were available for selection when my draft came along. I saw Whitey Ford still available at my pick, and nabbed him even though my scout (who at the time was rated outstanding to legendary in all categories) only rated him a 1 star current & potential. After 3 seasons he was still languishing in the lower reaches of the minor's with still the 1 star rating's. Ford has only slightly improved to become a 2 and a half star pitcher after I then traded up in the 1950 draft to have a choice between Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. To my surprise Willie Mays was rated only a 1 star current and potential, so I went with The Mick who was rated a 3 current and a 4 and a half star potential. May's was, in spite of his 1 star current/future ratingselected still selected number 2 pick. However 40 games into his rookie year I was able to secure him by trade without having to offer much in return, perhaps suggesting his team didnt envisage him developing. I am very ashamed to say it, but the thought of having a dud Willie Mays play in the competition made me feel ill and ended up committing sports simulation cardinal sin and adjust his ratings using the editor based on his peak season stats......I know I know I will go to hell for this... ![]() Now it's 1954 draft time and despite having the last pick in the 1st round, Sandy Koufax is still available, and needing some SP help in my bullpen thought he would be an absolute lock, but he too is only showing as being a 1 star current & future. After my issues with previously selecting guys like Ford and May's who didn't develop as per their historical stats would indicate, I decided to commit a terrible sin and peek in the editor and have a look at his potential ratings. Lo and behold he looks terrible with 86 being the hightes potential rating out of his 4 pitch types, with his worst being 32. His stuff potential only 68, and movement and control 91 & 75 respectively. I've checked my Game Setup to make sure I've selected the appropriate historical options that should result in historical players turning out as close as possible to their real life stats. I've selected *auto adjust league strategy *base positions/roles on real life stats *Auto import Historical rookies * Recalc player ratings based on real stats after each year *ratings recalc base after every 3 years * base ratings on real stats *base potential ratings on selected recalc period *auto adjust league total modifiers after each season for historical accuracy * base pitcher stamina on 3 year period The only historical elements I've not ticked are retire players according to history & players miss season according to history. Any ideas as to what's going on or what I'm not doing right? |

I think most of the discrepancy between what you expected and what you saw with certain players is due to having yearly recalc of player ratings based on real stats. I *think* you're getting players when they weren't very good. In addition, scouting of amateurs is very spotty at best even with the best scout possible.
A few comments on individual players: 1. Although Ford was selected to the Hall of Fame, he wasn't that great of a pitcher by peripherals (strikeouts, walks, HRs allowed). He owed most of his value to being durable and most of his fame to having the powerful Yankees lineups hitting behind him to rack up wins. 2. Mays had a terrible sophomore season in 1952 and was in the Army in 1953. Perhaps recalc decreased his ratings around this time. 3. Koufax was an average pitcher at best until 1961 and didn't take off as a superstar until 1962. So it's possible he entered the draft with low potentials. Are the numbers you're quoting as his ratings out of 200 or 100? I've never played historical leagues, so I don't know exactly how the game treats historical amateurs when recalc is turned on, but I'd guess that's the biggest factor here, along with the huge amount of scouting fog that comes with evaluating amateurs. |

The Pitcher ratings for Koufax I mentioned were out of 250 I believe. Thanks very much for the info! |
