OOTP 12 - Lost and Confused
Just to give a brief background of my OOTP experience--I haven't played any version of OOTP since 6.5 and have found my transition to 12 daunting and difficult.
I'm having a particularly hard time adjusting to the rating system on the players. I have no idea by just looking at their ratings to tell if a player is good or not, unless I know who they are. Would you all suggest just simming through a couple seasons and trying to learn that way? Also do you suggest playing with scouting on/off? I would love to eventually get to the point where I have every possible facet of the game turned on, but I also am having trouble making judgment calls between the two different scouts (OSA and SD) in the game. Ideally, I'd like to have a current major league game set up. I downloaded Cubbyfan's rosters but have been reading on the forum about high school/college feeders. Can someone explain to me what those are and how to implement them? Also, how would I add a winter league (and how do those work in OOTP 12)? ![]() Sorry for the spamming of questions, any help would be appreciated! |

If you are struggling with assessing players then turn scouting off at first. Then, all ratings you see will be "true" ratings rather than a scout's view.
If scouting is on, then always go with your scouting director over OSA. OSA is basically as bad as it gets, whereas your scouting director (depending on how accurate scouting is and how good he is) will be more accurate. To tell by looking if a player is good, the simplest way is to use the star rating. A 5-star player will be very good, a 1-star player probably not. You can also use the more detailed ratings such as contact, power, eye etc to see a bit more detail. For every rating, a higher number is better, so just plug in the players with the highest ratings at first and see how you go. No idea about feeder/winter leagues, sorry. |

First, 6.5 was a great engine. But it's outdated so I don't blame you for giving 12 a shot now.
They are totally different, I agree. But you'll get used to 12 just as you got used to 6.5. Rating system: Just my opinion, but I have found the best way to play is to turn OFF actual ratings, and turn scouting on. This way you're getting a scouting report to read, you're seeing a potential rating based on your scouts opinion and in terms of "now" its based more on YOUR statistical analysis etc. I rarely do offline, I tried one when I first got OOTP12 just to get familar, and with the way I play; I def. suggest simming some years first. |

Thank you both for your responses.
I'll make sure to rely more on the Scouting Director from now on. Does the SD know more than the OSA even for players not on your team? Or is it at that point harder to tell which knows more? Also, I guess my problem with the ratings is that it feels very different than the system that was in place for 6.5 (which was the last version of OOTP I played extensively). Using Cubbyfan's roster, it seems like if you have a rating in the 70s (using 1-100 scale) then it means the guy is a stud in that area and I'm guessing 50s is average? Any help with explaining the new rating scale would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the scouting director will still be better than OSA for other teams, but less so than for your own team.
In the 70s is pretty good (for standard ML set-up) although things can change over time so that 70 could end up elite or average in the end. Generally, 70+ would be household names, 60-70 good, 50-60 ok, and less than that minor league or ML-bench level, but obviously this is far from exhaustive and depends on other stats and the role for the player. |
