![]() To be honest I am not sure, can you edit a retired player and give him coach ratings or does he already have them and doesn't want to coach for you. Hey, in commissioner mode I found this gem. Try This: Action> Turn into Coach I just turned Hank Aaron into a Bench Coach..... |

To take it a step further, in commissioners mode once you have made him a coach, you either except the ratings it gives you. In Aarons case they were either unknown or inexperienced or again edit ratings in "editor"
I changed his so that he gets hired.... This is cool... I am sure others were aware of it, but I am the first to respond so I am taking credit for it .....

I could not find the area on the action button where you can make the player a coach...

Start by going into commissioner mode. Then select the retired player you want to turn into a coach. I picked Hank Aaron. Then at the bottom of the player page, select action. This is the list I get: Hank Aaron Open Player Profile Shortlist Player Compare Player Create Note Remove Player from HOF Clone Player Unretire Player Turn into Coach Delete Player Select Turn into Coach, I got a message that he is now a bench coach and is accessable in "Available Personnel" Open up his Profile while still in commissioners mode and you will get the following Tabs: Coach Profile and Ratings/Strategy Preferences/History/Editor I selected to edit Hank Aaron because he automatic ratings were either unknown or inexperienced. Edit as necessary.... Done. |

I've already turned Greg Maddux into the next greatest pitching coach
And Mike Piazza is working his way up the Mets system as a hitting coach. My issue with Bobby V, Pete Rose, and Davey Johnson is that when I click on action there is no option to turn them into a coach. Not sure why. |

Yup - I was in commish mode. They all show up as retired players, but there's no action option to turn them into a coach.
I tried in another game, and I was able to with Pete Rose but no luck with Bobby V or Johnson. |

me too
I've got the same problem. It works with most retired players, but there are some that can't be turned into coaches. Valentine, Jimy Williams, etc. Very unusual.

wasn't Jimy williams already a manager at one time? that might be a reason why, as they might be clones one shows as the retired player they are and the clone is the coach they became but aren't coaching or whatever.

No Rick Peterson as well. Also, there is a weird bug where Omar Minaya, Jerry Manuel, and a few other coaches/GM's are not available personnel but have to be released from their last position.

This is something of a continuing issue; recently released personnel are not listed in the "available" pool, but their retired-player listings no longer allow coach-conversion, as the "coach" version was a separate entity in the previous version of the game. For example, in v.11, Omar and Jerry and Asssistant GM Peterson all start out gainfully employed and thus present, but Mike Hargrove, Lee Mazzilli, Phil Garner, Jimy Williams, Larry Dierker and others are not available and can't be converted.
And, of course, there are people like Buck Showalter and Terry Collins who start 2010 "unemployed" (actually in minor-league coordinator or front office assistant or some other unlisted post) but are still considered managerial material; but since they never made the majors, they don't have a retired-player file for you to convert. Fortunately, the fix is relatively simple if you have the older versions; just find Hargrove/Garner/whomever in there; go into commish mode, record his ratings, and then make a clone of anyone you choose in your current game, adjust the name/body data to fit, and hand-import the ratings. Simple enough, and with v.8 being free and trial versions for other versions still being available (I think), you should be able to patch most of these gaps on your own. I don't know what the deal is on Bobby V and Rose, though; they haven't managed in America since before the game was created, so I don't know why they can't be converted to coaches but Sparky Anderson (for example) can. (Davey Johnson, who last helmed a big league team in 2000, is another example.) Looks as though it's just pure guess-work there. |
