Greg Vaughn put together a season for the ages and along with Ken Caminiti were a real power surge. The A's of course are the bash brothers and live off the long ball, with McGwire and Cansesco less then their best this season, the 89 may not be as scary as their reputation. Rickey Henderson is a wild card at the top of the A's lineup and is the best runner of either team. Steve Finley or Wally Joyner are big question marks in the Padre lineup, and the load may fall on just a few players. The Athletics are just more balanced with players like Carney Lansford and Terry Steinbach. ADVANTAGE: 89 A's Pitching - You dont want to get to the end of the game behind with either of these teams as they have two of the best closers to ever throw on their side. The Padres are also lead by workhorse and power arm Kevin Brown who challanges hitters without a blink; that could backfire against these fastball hammering A's. Dave Stewart and Bob Welsch lead a veteran A's staff that doesnt use power but pitches smartly and keeps their teams in it. The A's are just a bit deeper here as well and can find more quality innings out of their staff. The bullpens for both sides are very good. ADVANTAGE: 89 A's Overall - A California battle between two teams that are very similar, it just appears the A's play this style a little better then the Padres do. The A's are also the proven winners and most likely have the experiance and manager to get the job done. San Diego did impress in their last series but the raod for the underdog is much more difficult now as the series of play is seven games. Look for the A's to have too much for the Padres who can be happy with how well they have played up to this point. PREDICTION: 1989 A's in Five Probable Pitching Matchups Game 1 at Oakland Coliseum: Kevin Brown (18-7, 2.38) vs Dave Stewart (21-9, 3.32) Game 2 at Oakland Coliseum: Andy Ashby (17-9, 3.34) vs Mike Moore (19-11, 2.61) Game 3 at Qualcomm Stadium: Bob Welch (17-8, 3.00) vs Sterling Hitchcock (9-7, 3.93) |

Oakland Strikes First In Tight Squeeze Padres Commit 3 Errors To Come Up Short In Game 1 Oakland Coliseum - A calm California night in Oakland opened this series with Dave Stewart and Kevin Brown taking the mound. Both these starters lean on intimidation but its the Padres that really needed the better performance as their team depends moere on Brown to bring them the wins. The game was tight and the small details like defense played a role in the final outcome.
Kevin Brown came out blazing his fastball but as many of the scouts warned, the Athletics do well with fastballs. With a man on in the first Carney Lansford lined a double to right that scored a run. With a man on Jose Cansesco got the pitch he loves and hit the ball over the fence in left. The three runs for the A's was a punch in the gut to the Padres but they were not about to quit. In fact in the second inning the Padres did get one back to cut the lead to two runs but left men in scoring position in the process. In the bottom of the second Greg Vaughn threw a runner out at the dish to preserve the lead as Kevin Brown was having a tough time settling down. Chances came and went however and the game and scoreline stayed the same to the 6th inning before the Padres had a big answer. Their slugger Greg Vaughn had his chance and Dave Stewart lost his location. With a man on Vaughn laid into one to left center for a home run to to tie the game. All even now the intensity of the game was turned to high. The A's came right back in the bottom of the fram and a couple of walks set the chance up. A passed ball by Greg Myers scored the go ahead run. With runners on first and second Terry Steinbach singled but Mark McGwire tried to score, he was dead at the plate with Steve Finley providing the good play. Mike Gallego then struck out and Kevin Brown left the inning giving up the lead but not imploding completely. A two out rally in the seventh tied the game when a double and a single put Wally Joyner on third base. A balk of all things was called to score the tying run, Tony Larussa came out for an explanation but the game was now tied again. In the bottom of the 7th the A's came back again. This time three errors in the inning really cost the Padres. Steve Finley this time made the final mistake breaking late on a shallow fly and missing a catch, the go ahead run scored and it was getting late which meant it was close to closer time. Trevor Hoffman came on in the 8th to keep his team within a run and give the A's a taste of his dominance. Hoffman did his job but in the ninth on came Dennis Eckersley to close the deal. Eck struck out Wally Joyner and then Tony Gwynn singled to put the tying run on. Ken Caminiti however also struck out and Greg Vaughn lined out to second and game one was in the books. The favorites win in a tight game where unfortunately the Padres defense wilted in that fatal 7th inning. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 1989 A's lead series 1-0

Hoffman And Padres Bow To A's Pressure Again Padres Closer Walks In Winner In 10th Of Close Game Oakland Coliseum - The 1998 Padres know they may have some shortcomings but one of the least things they thought they couldnt count on was the arm of closer Trevor Hoffman. In a close battle however that is exactly what happened as the 89 Athletics beat San Diego again, this time in extra innings, to keep clear control of this series.
Back at the beginning of this one Andy Ashby and Bob Welch took the mound for their teams and are pitchers who use their heads often times more then just their arms. A Rickey Henderson RBI double in the first inning gave the home team an early lead but Tony Gwynn tied the game in the top of the third inning. Carlos Hernandez showed some pop as he went yard to give the Padres the lead, soon after the game was tied again as Walt Weiss delivered with a two out hit. Heading into the late innings neither team could get an edge in this game, but it was the A's who were missing the most scoring chances. Luis Polonia drove in the go ahead run in the 7th however and with Dennis Eckerley warming up, time was short for the Padres. Tony Gwynn knew the situation as well and Gwynn laced a line drive to the left field corner that just cleared the wall and the Padres had tied the game. Leave it to Gwynn to know exactly when to shoot for the fences as his bat control, even at this age, is the thing of legends. Welch was pulled ijn the 9th and Rick Honeycutt was the choice for Tony Larussa. In the bottom of the 9th, knowing how big this game was, Bruce Bochy called on Trevor Hoffman in a tie game and knew he needed his best on the mound. Hoffman struck out a man and picked off Stan Javier to end the ninth and prove his manager right. Honeycutt however closed down the Padres in the 10th even though Quivio Veras made it all the way to third base before Steve Finley flied out with two outs. In the bottom of the 10th with one out Luis Polonia singled an Hoffman was in a role he wasnt used to, a rally that was created by his own doing. Hoffman however struck out Carney Lansford on a cutter and got the second out. Luis Polonia however stole second and the Padres decided to intentionally walk Rickey Henderson as his run was meaningless. The hope was that Jose Canseco would hit into a double play. Canseco singled however on a line to right field and the runners held to load the bases with two out and Mark McGwire coming to the plate. With the pressure mounting and the Coliseum as loud as it can get, Hoffman fell behind in the count. On a 3-1 pitch the dominant closer missed outside and the game winning run crossed the plate. The loss was a devastating one for the Padres who failed to get either game in Oakland despite using Kevin Brown and Treffor Hoffman, their two best pitchers. "I let my team down and wasnt as sharp as I needed to be with their two big hitters," said Hoffman of his 10th inning, "I wasnt tired nor intimidated, I just blew it." Now the scene changes and the Padres need to stay confident and poised as Sterling Hitchcock takes the mound against Mike Moore. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 1989 Athletics lead series 2-0

Moore Is All Class On The Mound For A's Oakland Shutsout Padres 3-0 And Now Have Their Eyes On Sweep Qualcomm Stadium - When people think and remember the A's of this era they think of long home runs and brash personalities. What some fail to remember is the quiet demenour and profesionalism of the like of starter Mike Moore who had it all in game three of this series. Moore crafted an imppresive shutout on the road and has the 1989 A's looking pretty in this series.
The bats all around in this first game in San Diego were fairly silent as the spacious ball yard is known to make pitchers very happy. San Diego did have a full house and all the hope that they could indeed turn around this series behidn starter Steling Hitchcock. Opposing Hitchcock was Mike Moore who man believe is much better then a third starter. Both pitchers had strong games but when one of the two lets up no runs, they are indeed impossible to beat. Moore did have runners on second and third in the 2nd inning but fooled Carlos Hernandez to get out of it. With his first time at the plate Moore singled off Hitchcock and set the stage for the games first run. Stan Javier would double and later Dave Henderson would hit a fielders choice to score a run. In the 4th, Stan Javier came through again with single with two outs to drive in the second run. Carney Lansford then came up and hit one to Ken Caminiti who bobbled it and allowed a third run to score. Hitchcock had been a victim of some bad luck and now his team was in a hole. In the 5th inning when the Padres were hoping for a rally, Moore sat back and struck out the side and seemed to be gaining confidence with his three run lead. The biggest test would come in the bottom of the 7th when Greg Vaugh lead off with a double and Chris Gomez hit a single up the middle, a risky decision was made to send Vaughn home and Dave Hernderson made a perfect throw to the plate to nail his man. Those are the kind of plays that bury rallies. In the 9th Tony LaRussa brought on Dennis Eckersley even though Moore was still going strong. Eck threw 11 pitches and struck out Chris Gomez to end game three. The Padres now face the almost impossible task of winning four in a row and getting back into this series. Moore was simply as good as it gets on this night, a night when his offense wasnt very strong but didnt have to be. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 1989 Oakland A's Lead Series 3-0

I may not have predicted it in this thread, but I thought the A's were going to win
![]() I'll echo what others have said- don't stop. I'm really enjoying this little ride through ghosts of baseball teams past, and I like your writing quite a bit.

Kevin Brown Stares Down A's For Survival Padres A's Tames A's With 9 K's And Keeps Series Alive Oualcomm Stadium - Any team that is facing a three games to none hole needs to take one game at a time to try and achieve the close to impossible. The 1998 Padres took the field in game four with a sense of pride in them that they didnt want to bow out so easy and disapoint their loyal fans.
"Its all about having some pride" said Padre starter Kevin Brown, who had an excellent start against the 89 A's in a 5-1 win that keeps this series alive and makes it just a bit less lopsided. Brown threw is high heater and cutter keeping the Oakland sluggers off their game. Dave Stewart on the other side had less command of his stuff and faced numerous Padre rallies. Stewart would however stick it through for 8 full innings and threw every pitch like he believed his team could come back for him. Greg Vaughn took some pressure off for the home side with a two out single in the bottom of the first that Quilvio Veras beat the tag at the plate on. In the 4th Ken Caminiti then hit his first home run of the series to the opposite field showing off his great power to all fields, this one went 455 feet and the Padres were up two. Tony Gwynn knows when to come through and he broke the game open in the sixth. With two on and two out and the runners going Gwynn took a full count pitch and drove in down the right field line to clear the bases and really put the Padres in the drivers seat. Gwynn took a low pitch and drove it like he only could, a true clinic in hitting even at the age of 37. An Andy Sheets solo home run made the lead five runs and Kevin Brown had it all under control striking out nine hading into the 9th inning. In the 9th Brown did tire and with one out allowed a double and a single that scored a run. Up to this point Brown was throwing a two hit shutout. Still with no chances worth taking manager Bruce Bochy called on Randy Myers for the last two outs. Myers got Rickey Henderson of all men to ground into a game ending 6-4-3 double play and the Padres had their win. San Diego look to take game five on their home field as well and then hope for the best back in Oakland. The A's just hope that their bats can get a wake up call. Joey Hamilton will get the call for the Padres against 19 game winner Storm Davis. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 1989 A's lead series 3-1

Padres Silenced As A's Move On Behind Davis Storm Davis Five Hit Shutout Is Enough To End Series Qualcomm Stadium - As the series has moved to the later games in the spacious grounds of Qualcomm stadium the pitchers have been the forces and the runs have been hard to come by. On this night with everything on the line for the 1998 San Diego Padres, their bats went silent and the 1989 A's complete a dominant series win.
Storm Davis and Joey Hamilton are not at the top of their respective rotations but took advanatge of their chance to start in this series and both pitched good games. In a game that is dominanted by pitching also needs solid defense, and again this is where the Padres fell a little short. A Ken Caminiti error at third base allowed the A's to score their first run when the third baseman made a bad throw to first. Rickey Henderson then added a two run single to score a second run and the A's had their lead behind Davis in the third inning. The score would stay that way until the 8th when Oakland ended any more drama. Dan Miceli came on in relief for Hamilton with the bases loaded but walked in a run. After Jose Canseco struck out little Walt Weiss delivered a two run single and the A's were up by five runs. The real story of the game was Davis however. The 27 year old right hander who had glory days in Baltimore was all that and more as the Padres couldnt get anything going; even Tony Gwynn went hitless in this one. The Atletics do what most thought they would do and move past the Padres in this series. Tony Larussa and his men now move on to the final 32 of this competition. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 5 1989 Athletics Win Series 4-1

Tough way to lose, hold to "Bash Brothers" to 0 hits, the rest of the A's to 5 hits and lose.
But Storm Davis had a good outing... |

The Miracle Mets dont have all the pop in the world at the plate but of coure get the big hits when they need them, in fact not a single starter hit over .300. Neither team had much speed on the bases but the Giants had the bigger bats and a better team batting average, the Giants scored almost 100 more runs then the Mets did. Willie Mays is as good as they come and Mote Irwin and Al Dark are strong in support. The Giants get on base more and have the advantage and star power here. ADVANTAGE: 1954 GIANTS Pitching - The two aces at the top are legit as Tom Seaver won more games then his age and Johnny Antonelli served as the Giant go to arm. Jerry Koosman is another semi ace that may help the Mets get the edge in this catagory as their team ERA is better and under 3. Ruben Gomez and Sal Maglie keep the Giants good but not great. The Mets also have Tug McGraw and Nolan Ryan in their bullpen which shows you their depth. If pitching is the X factor as it always is, the Mets could be the favorites. ADVANTAGE: 1969 Mets Overall - This series like so many others is so close to call but the drama in any all New York series should provide for great action. The time is now for Willie Mays to shine and prove he can carry an offense and sparkle when it counts. The Mets are young and dont seem to feel pressure, eveyone knows what they did when Gil Hodges had them hot during their chempionship run; just ask a Cubs fan if you forgot. Predictions seem to be split right down the middle for many in this battle but when it comes down to the big moment and key play, I would have to side with the Miracle Mets but just barely. PREDICTION: 1969 Mets in 7 Probable Pitching Matchups Game 1 from Shea Stadium: Johnny Antonelli (21-7, 2.30) vs Tom Seaver (25-7, 2.21) Game 2 from Shea Stadium: Ruben Gomez (17-9, 2.88) vs Jerry Koosman (17-9, 2.28) Game 3 from the Polo Grounds: Gary Gentry (13-12, 3.43) vs Sal Maglie (14-6, 3.26) |

I'm picking the 54 Giants, even though part of me does believe the 69 Mets will win. I can't go against my team, and the young Willie Mays is unstoppable (69 Mets had the old version right?). I see this series going to a deciding final game either way, because both are very good teams.

Mets Humble Giants In Opening Laugher Two Huge Inning And 15 Runs Make Seaver's Job Easy Shea Stadium - The buzz of a New York city brought much expected excitement to the first game of this series between the 69 Mets and 54 Giants. The buzz however quickly turned into a festival at Shea Stadium as the Miracle Mets needed no such thing on this night by running the Giants off the field in a 15-3 whitewash. There is just something special about this Mets team when they play at home in a big game.
Giant starter Johnny Anntonelli and his teamates will want to forget and get over this game, inlcuding a second inning where everything fell apart and the Mets broke things open with 8 runs. Three Met singles in a row and a walk plated one run and started the rally. After two had scored Tom Seaver doubled in two more runs to make the lead four. Ken Boswell then singled a fifth run that was enough for Leo Durocher and Antonelli who was pulled. Cleon Jones finally capped the inning with a two run home run and the tight game that was suppose to be was already an 8-0 lead for the Mets. The Mets actually did very little outside the two big innings that they had but obviously those two innings were all that they would need. The Giants only had two less hits then the Mets but didnt come close to making most of those hits count and stranded 25 base runners. In the bottom of the 7th the Mets did it again scoring seven runs and maybe setting a tone for the remainder of the series. The big hits were a Duffy Dyer two run double as well as an Art Shamsky two run two bagger. An error by Hank Thompson also helped set up the big inning. Tom Seaver went seven innings and allowed 8 hits and two runs but had a stress free comfortable start. Tug McGraw finished off the job and left the Mets and their fans feeling strong. "Its only one game" said Willie Mays who went 2-4 after his team's big loss, "I know in this city everyone wants to make more of this then it really is, but we just have to come back and win tomorrow." How the Giants respond will indeed be the focus of things, but championship teams have a tendancy to respond well. Nothing has been won of decided yet, but the confidence levels for these two teams are polar opposites after the opener. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 1969 Mets lead series 1-0

Different Game, Same Result 10 Inning Drama Goes To Mets For Series Stronghold Shea Stadium - Pinch hitter Duffy Dyer singled to right field at the perfect time with a man on in the 10th inning to score the winning run of a very tight and well played game. Game two of this series was much diffrent in contrast with the opener, but to the Giants dismay, the result was very much the same. The Mets leave their part of town with a two games to none series lead. Jerry Koosman was really the man of this night as the Mets starter went the distance of 10 innings throwing 163 pitches, Koosman just didnt want to come out of this game. Giant starter Ruben Gomez threw 137 pitches of his own matched Koosman until he was pulled from the game in the 9th inning. In the 4th inning Ken Boswell got the miracle Mets on the board with a two out single. The Mets have been excellent hitting with two out and men on. A sacrafice fly tied the game but the Mets again took the lead in the 6th inning and Art Shamsky lined a double to right that scored two players and gave the home side a two run lead. The Giants didnt give up or fall away like they did in game one, they had plenty of fight left in them. The Giant fight would come in the form of the long ball, and the moment would come in the 8th inning. After Whitey Lockman walked, Wes Westrum hammered a pitch to left field and the Giants for the first time had hope as they tied the game at three. In the 9th the Giants had a chance to move ahead with men on 2nd and 3rd but Don Mueller struck out swinging in a scoring chance they would regret. Hoyt Wilhelm came on in the 9th and was the man on the mound in the 10th as the game moved to extra innings. Wayne Garrett opened the inning with a double to right followed by Donn Clendenon who lined a single but the winning run was held up. After strike out, the Giants thought they might be able to fight out of it, but the Dyer winning hit had eyes and gave the Mets their second win and full control of this series. Now the scene shifts to the Polo Grounds and the Giants hope the change means wins for them or the series may be much shorter then many expected. Sal Maglie will have the pressure as the man on the mound for the Giants in game three. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 1969 Mets lead series 2-0
