What statistics do you weigh heavily?

I am not happy with the direction my organization is heading in. I want to change my approach. What statistics do you guys use to evaluate hitters and pitchers?

In the new game? WAR. That is what is good for.

If you are talking straight stats? WAR, VORP, OBP, and ops for hitters. (and defense at SS, 2nd and CF especially).

Pitchers: WAR, VORP and WHIP (and their endurance) for starters.
Relievers: WHIP, K/9, and k/bb.

High. GB= more outs, less extra base hits. That is why I always have great defenders at SS and 2nd.

Do you find ZR effective in evaluating fielders?

Yes. But honestly, the ratings on the player defense is almost always right, so I look at them more than stats. Even if you trying to "ratings blind" with stats only play, certain things should be observed by the eyes and you really don't need to turn ratings off on (players speed, defense, etc.).

Agree

I've had the same philosophy since OOTP 9.

High GB% pitchers and great defense up the middle.

For hitters, I'm a OBP fan. I'll take a .250 hitter with a .390 OBP all day.

I like to look at the L/R splits also for hitters. I like to have a strong hitter vs LHP and a strong one vs RHP on my bench at all times.

Don't forget to put a couple lefty arms in your pen. Don't over due it like I see a lot of online GM's do and stock it FULL of LHP. Most hitters are righties.

I keep it real simple. High OPS for hitters and low WHIP for pitchers. Grab the best you can on those two stats and you will dominate.

I'll just add my 2 cents here and say that ZR is also used in the calculation of WAR:

WAR = (VORP + ZR)/10.

Which only makes WAR even more awesome. It really feels like it's designed to be the best stat to rely on, if you could only rely on one.

Absolutely. The only draw back to WAR, is it is a slow building number during the season. But to look at the past three years? Thumbs up.

I'll second WHIP for pitchers and OPS for hitters.

wOBA. In OOTP, WAR.

According to OOTP itself, OOTP MLB play (modern and historical) outnumbers OOTP fictional play three to one.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Use FIP mostly for pitchers. It's good at balancing K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 and the fact that it's scaled like ERA makes it that much more helpful. And while ERA+ is far too streaky to look at it over one season, it's a decent enough stat over several years so I'll at least glance at that. For hitters, primarily OPS+, wOBA and WAR.
