Okay, I screwed up...

All right, so I started my great experiment again with a fictional league, and started a dynasty even in the Dynasty forum. However, I just realized I had a problem.

See, when I did this the last time (back in OOTP 8 I think), the way I did my inaugural draft, I filled the minors, released everyone, filled them again, released everyone again, and then started the draft. If memory serves, the draft went without a hitch, and the draft pool was wholly comprised of the free agents. My entire goal was to start the league and have no player over like 24 in the entire thing. (The general purpose was to make the first few seasons insanely unpredictable.)

I tried that again this time, but I just noticed that I had guys getting drafted who had supposedly been in the league a dozen years or more, or even almost close to retirement age. Restarting from a backup, this time I just outright deleted EVERY player in free agency, then ran the draft. Surprisingly to me, the draft still happened.

So, clearly, the draft pool for an inaugural draft has little or nothing to do with the free agent list. Which means, I'm TOTALLY misunderstanding something, especially given that I don't see a "Draft Pool" option anywhere where I could, say, wipe out the draft pool list. So I'm not sure what to do.

Is there a way I can do what I'm attempting to do? Basically, I want the first season -- the inaugural draft -- to be comprised of players basically pulled from Triple- or Double-A. I don't want anyone past their mid-20s if possible (unless players show up in Triple-A that old), and I definitely don't want anyone established skill-wise. I know I can use the "Erase MLB Service Time" command as an emergency if there's no way around the former, but as for the latter, I'm not sure how I can pull that off if the draft pool is pre-set some how.

The inaugural draft takes ALL players in the league and releases them and runs a draft, not jut the free agents.

To do what you want to do just create a league (but don't select to do an inaugural draft) and then go to the free agents screen and select the tab for "Show All Players". Then click on the circle to the left top of the list to mass-select everyone, right click and choose delete. This will get rid of everyone.

Now go to the league setup screen and choose one of your minor leagues with the drop down menu to the upper right. Click on the function menu down near the bottom and choose to fill the league with fictional players.
Do this for each of your minor leagues in turn. You may also want to do this twice for a league or two to make sure you have enough players for all the leagues, including the major. (let me know if you can't figure out how to do it twice).

After that is done, THEN go to your major league setup page and choose release all players and schedule inaugural draft.

That should do what you want.

Too late now for the current league but you before starting the new league you could change the max age for players in the league to 24 then after the draft change it back. Players will still vary in skill level though, I don't know if that's part of what your looking for

Thanks to the both of you!

@Questdog, I'll give that a shot next time I play, probably tomorrow... I'm close to finishing Oblivion (a good, what, five years after the game came out?), so I'm pretty eager to get that out of my gaming checklist.

I think my issue was that I didn't see the "View All Players" button. I remember when I started, I did not choose the "Release everyone" option, which I probably should have done. Regardless, if your instructions works to axe absolutely everyone in the league, all the better.

@Mouse I kept a backup save of my league after I did the divisions, alignments, and team names, but before the draft actually took place, just in case something like this happened. I didn't realize there was an option anywhere to set the max age of players; that's pretty cool. I'll have to poke around to find it. I don't mind some skill variance, I just don't want any superstars in the league quite yet. I basically want to see a superstar develop, rather than one just appearing out of thin air, if that makes sense.

Edited to add: I just realized, when I initially set up my league, I told it to do an inaugural draft. Is there a way to cancel it? Can I just run the draft, release everyone, delete everyone per your instructions, THEN schedule another draft?

Probably.

If you do the suggestion to change max age to 24, rather than deleting the major leaguers, you will have a BUNCH of superstar youngsters. It seemed to me that that is not your desire.

Indeed. I want my first few seasons basically to have nothing but Single- and Double-A level quality.

Like I said, I know it's sadistic. I just want to see superstars made, rather than created.
