How do you build an elite farm system?

Like the royals have right now with like 4 top 20 prospects. Even in the game 20 years down the line I see some farm systems with like 6-7 top 100 prospects. And see my team with one or two top 100 prospects if I'm lucky. Whats the secret?

I have honestly been waiting for someone to start talking strategy.

If rating high on the prospect list is important, then you need to draft high potential high school players, with good intangibles (because they stay on the list longer) and get lucky with random talent changes and injuries. I'm not saying it's the best organizational, but a top college prospect doesn't stay on the list very long.

Scouting, coaching, player dev, and smart promotions are important too, of course.

The only other good tip is, when you're down to drafting low potential players, pick the one's with good defense. If they do get lucky with a random bump, you're much better off.

I think it is key to draft smart and to not rush young prospects. While it is tempting to rush a five tool 19 year old prospect through your system, its better to give him time.

But what do you do when your 19 year old phenom is angry and says he wants to play in the majors now.

Let him whine, you have him until he qualifies for minor leaque free agency or Rule 5 eligibility, by that time you should have a good handle on whether he is MLB material...

I rarely promote anyone prior to them qualifying for Rule 5 eligibility, not to say its the perfect system, but I am normally in the top 10 for prospects and when they are finally ready to promote, they usually have 1-2 full seasons of AAA experience.

Simple - study what the Mets and Astros have done in real life and do the opposite

If there was easy way to do it, everyone would. The real life Royals were able to do it because they suck every year and get to draft high. That's how the Rays did it too. The Pirates are a topic for another thread.

You can take that route, or just invest in good coaches if they are available, hire a good scout if he is available, draft who you think the best guys that are available, then cross your fingers and hope for the best.

This is my biggest problem! I ALWAYS tend to bring up my prospects too early because i am excited about them and then they end up sucking in the big leagues and i have to send them back down and everything is just messed up

If your playin with personality ratings on look for guys with high ratings in work ethic and morale. These seem to be the guys that get the most ratings bumps, and are less likely to flame out. Also, trade, trade, trade, trade. Look at other team's needs, and offer them what you need. You can make some good deals that way, and maybe get an additional prospect. Just like in real life, trade away players at the end of their contract if you don't plan on re-signing them. Trade prospects that you don't need. You don't need 3 superstar catcher prospects. Recognize that catchers and SP's will fetch better offers when you shop them around. You also may want to consider playing without scouting or the morale system.
