Prospect's potential dropped

My top pitching prospect had a potential rating of 77 out of 80 in 2011, but now prior to the start of the 2012 season it has dropped to 60something. He is still young, he is only 20. Is it possible for his potentail rating to rise back to the high 70s?

What, in comparison, happened to his overall rating? For instance, was he 55/77 and now he's 59/60? Did the gap narrow from both directions?

I don't have the game in front of me, but I believe he was 20/77 and now hes 20/65 or so

Theres a lot of variance in this game compared to what we see in other games. The beauty of this game is like in real life anything can and usually does happen. So things like a top prospect flaming out or not reaching his potential happens a lot. Usually though if a prospect is really elite at worst he'll be an average starter. Just the swings of the game like in real life.

In short: can he? Yes. Will he? It isn't likely. If he drops again, I would trade him as fast as possible.

A once elite top prospect is not living up to his potential and his major league career may consist of a charity start or two after a September call up when your team is either out of it or clinched?

Are you playing with scouting on or off? because in my fictional league where i disabled ratings but and i could only go off of stats and my scouts reports, i had my top prospect's report go from "future top-flight starter" to "middle of rotation starter" and then back to top-flight starter... so is it possible that maybe your scouts opinion of him just changed? that is if ur playing with scouting on.

Keep in mind also that the for awhile after a new player is first scouted his given ratings are more volatile and then gradually settle down, on the theory that it takes awhile for scouts to get a handle on how good/bad a player really is. IIRC, this period of volatility is two or three seasons, but don't quote me on that.
