I understand that a patch will be out to fix the pitcher problem with Lahman 4.5. I was wondering how to open cvs files so I could edit the handful of pitchers with this problem (starting in 1921)? Everytime I try to open these files it asks me if I want to download? it from the net. The file is already on my hard drive. Any help?

I do not think you can edit files with the free MS Office viewers though. A good text editor would work too, but in either case you must back up the original file (in case you mess up) and ideally know what you are doing. If you don't know what a text editor is I'd advise waiting for the patch unless someone that has fixed this error manually (in the CSV files) posts a deatiled walk through .

Actually for the Batting and Pitching and Fielding files they are too big to load completely into Excel, you will need to use Word or Word Pad to edit these.

You can use Foxpro databases (without the limitation of rows that Access and Excel have) to edit out the Totals rows too.
Is this the only known issue with the DB? I could try to clean it up tonight at home.

It's not the only issue (I have already fixed this one, only took about 30 minutes).
The other issues are mostly missing data issues, that look to be a result of a rush job to release the database in time for opening day. The biographical information is missing from players who've debuted from 1998 on, and manager data for 2001 wasn't entered among other things. I'm working on getting this data together, but editing the biographical information takes awhile. So far I've managed to do this work on the database: -Remove the TOT entries from the pitchers stats in the Database -Add the biographical information for the rookies who debuted in 2001. I have to keep going on the rest, but it will take awhile. Perhaps you'd like to help? PM me if you are interested. |
