Importing individual players

Being new to OOTP, can I create a league and import individual players from various years to teams? Is this an easy procedure? Time consuming if I have, say 28 teams?
Would really like to create Franchise Teams with each team having players from various years. Would like normalized stats. Should I also use a particular year as a normalized basis. Does the league have to have a base year or can season be based on some historical average? Would just want to play that one year and repeat that year.
Alternative to setting up franchises, would be to set up a single Franchise League. Example: Detroit Tigers years 1961-1972. Am I able to then release all players from these 12 years and have computer draft best 3 teams of Detroit. Can I then import these 3 created teams into my franchise mixed league with other franchises? Is this a hard time consuming process? Has anybody tried to do something similar to this?
