Vastly Overpaid players?

What do you do with these guys when you cant find a team to trade him to. I have Rickie Weeks making 9,200,000 a year. I have him on my minor in the minors because I have better players. Of course he is mad. But what do I do with him? how does it work if I cut him? Do I eat all the money in the current season, over the life of the contract he is signed for? Not sure what do do with him, other than he needs to go.

Only real solution I have found is through trade. First I'd try trading him to teams with a huge budget. It may cost you a few prospects. If that doesn't work you can try trading him for a player making similar money but a free agent at the end of the year.

You would eat all of the remaining money for his contract the moment you release him.

I agree with sectione8ght's suggestion (trade him is the only way). Do you ever see those news stories that start around June every season that say that such-and-such player wants out? If one of those guys is in the last year of their contract you may be able to trade one problem child for the other -- you may have to give up a decent prospect to get it done, though.

Put the other team's complainer in the trade window and, without any players for your side, choose Make This Work Now! If the other team is super-desperate they'll accept one of your worst scrubs in return. *That's* the kind of team that should be willing to deal. If they ask for half-decent prospects in return, it's not going to be a good deal for you.

I ended up cutting him. I tried trading him to every team. Got the same response. I will start looking for guys that are not happy. Thanks for the advice.

I know he has since been released, but for these situations I try waiting until the off-season, if possible, and look for teams that are desperate for 2B (in this example) or another position player.

Sometimes I'll trade an overpaid position player for and overpaid position player of need. It doesn't always work, but it might be better than eating a player's salary all at once.
