Day of Season - Upgrade

Which day of the season do I need to be at to upgrade my league from OOTP 11 to 12? Is it opening day like it used to be?

The manual recommends doing it during the off-season.

You can however, upgrade on any day of the year you like. I've done it at many different times of the season and never had a problem.
