TSN '49 for July-August 1954

BROOKLYN'S SNIDER EYES TRIPLE CROWN

BROOKLYN - For the first time since 1937, when then Cardinal Joe "Ducky" Medwick" achieved the feat, the National League could have a Triple Crown winner. Dodgers OF Duke Snider remains tantalizingly close to the prize as the playing schedule moves into mid-August. Snider's .350 batting mark is 15 points higher than his closest competitor, Philadelphia's Ted Williams. His 35 home-runs are 9 better than Philadelphia's Del Ennis, but Ennis holds the league's RBI lead with 88, one better than Snider's 87.

Williams was the last player in the Major Leagues to achieve the Triple Crown, doing so in 1947 when he played with Boston. His Phillies remain atop the NL standings, 5 games ahead of Snider's Dodgers. Leo Durocher acknowledges that he'd like Duke to achieve the distinction but would much rather get his Bums into their 4th World Series in 5 years if given a choice.

SHOCKIN' SOX AWAIT NL FLAG BEARER

BOSTON - Having practically clinched the AL pennant in May, the Boston Red Sox now must wait the better part of two months to prove themselves in the Fall Classic. Manager Ellis Kinder, who pitched for the Red Sox when they last made a World Series appearance in 1948, is concentrating on keeping his proteges focused and, more importantly, healthy.

"I was fortunate to play for Joe while he managed here," says Kinder, referring to Joe McCarthy who managed the Red Sox into that 1948 Series and left the bench after the 1952 season. "I think I learned a thing or two about steering the course."

Meanwhile two Red Sox arms - Curt Simmons and Virgil Trucks - are aiming for their 20th wins of the season in the coming week. Kinder points to their success, and his entire pitching corps, as the primary reason why the Red Sox have managed to dominate their opponents in 1954.

COBB RUMORED ON THE WAY OUT IN D.C.

With his team in the American League cellar and his patience running out, Ty Cobb now must contend with some vicious rumors circulating in the nation's capital.

U.S. Senator Guy M. Gillette of Iowa claims that his wife was verbally assaulted by the Senators manager early in July at a social function. The fiery Cobb refutes the allegations, but won't deny other serious accusations.

Young Senators 1B Norm Zauchin claims that Cobb came at him with a bat after he struck out late in a game against the Yankees. "I thought he was going to swing it at me," said Zauchin. Other Senators players have reportedly gone to owner R. Tomlinson's office to complain about Cobb's indifferent attitude towards them. Cobb has developed a reputation for extreme aloofness, even while he piloted the Phillies 1952 Championship run.

With Muddy Ruehl and Roger Peckinpaugh both seen in Tomlinson's company, critics don't expect Cobb to survive the season.

"This is the 'Georgia Peaches' last ride," said Washington Post writer Sh. Povich, "after he abandoned Philadelphia last year, I can't imagine any teams taking him on and he isn't getting younger."

TIDBITS

The Cincinnati Reds, in an effort to fuel a pennant run, acquired 3B Sid Gordon from the Chicago White Sox. Gordon, a perennial NL All-Star while with the Giants, is best known for his walk-off HR in the 1952 season finale that forced the Reds into a playoff with the Phillies, which they ultimately lost.

Gordon had played for his new team for less than a week when he was cut down by injury. Reds skipper John Neun hopes the Reds can stay in the race until Gordon gets back in the lineup.

Wow, I'd have to say that Granny Hamner looks a heck of a lot better in PWBL then he does in SO49. My Phillies could use a better Granny

The PWBL A's sold the farm to acquire Granny from the Phillies in '48 and are now waiting patiently for his skills to grow into his talents, which are considerable.

I'm curious as to what the Phillies had to give up to snatch Ted Willliams from the Red Sox.

Richie Ashburn, Curt Simmons and some draft picks IIRC...the Williams deal (Matt Batts and Johnny Pesky were also included) basically provided the foundations for the incredible ascension of the 'Shockin' Sox' this year (54).

Good deal on both ends...and if the Phils hold on in the NL, everyone involved will get a go-round in the Fall Classic. Should make for some good times

Could be a very interesting series. That is if I can hold off those darn Dodgers. Duke can have his Triple Crown, I just want the pennant

The trade was a big one. I traded alot of my future for a crack at the series. It seems to have worked out well for both of us thus far.
