Maybe it's time for a lock on this thread. He can post questions on the forum every time when he has a new question using his current nick. I don't think a personal thread helps much to have normal OOTP discussions when everyone else can read who the poster is. He has introduced himself to us, that's nice. Now let's move on, put a lock on this one and continue like every-day's business.

Tab I would like to see

In the player development report for my system, where each team is listed, I would like to see the players progress since the LAST report. In my first year, my players have been updated and improved, or gotten worse, but I can only get a cumulative shot of their progress, I would like to see how much they've improved in the past month or two since the last report, and I can only get their improvement since 1.1.09...
Btw, hitting September 1st, 1.5 up in the WC over the Pirates, 3.5 behind the Cubs.

I've always been more fascinated with the art of pitching in baseball, as opposed to the art of hitting, so it is a treat to have Mr. Schilling participating in this forum.

A few of questions, if you have the time:

  • Who was/is the best pitcher in baseball history in your opinion?
  • Who was the toughest batter you ever faced?
  • Do you think the "modern" approach to pitching, i.e. specialization, hurts clubs more than it helps at times?
For a career, Maddux
Situational question. Runner on 3rd less than 2 outs? Gwynn.
Define hurt? I don't really know, I do know that a pitcher today, in 1920, would have been far better

You playing a MLB fictional set up? Real teams, but fake players?

FWIW guys I am cool with people asking questions here and there for sure. As long as people are polite and cool about it I'm ok.
Will keep throwing up suggestions if you want them for the game.
One thing I do have questions or suggestions about is the 'records' news. I think you guys could, given what appears to be a a pretty robust toolset for gathering data, the news on stats around leagues and biggest players, heavier players etc., could be much more tailored to what us, I think, as baseball fans want. Not sure I am into who leads my AA league in caught stealing while playing 3B. I would like to know who leads my AA league in OPS, or who in my major leagues is the OB% as an OF, or which pitchers are leading my AAA in WHIP.....

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

This x1000. Would be nice to see when all-time records or single season records are broke or even team records for that matter.

Those do come up (I've seen WHIP and OBP by position), but there are too many random ones that are of less interest.

You don't really know when a record is broken until you view the records pages. I also wanted to see that kind of mentioned in PbP when the record is broken or the play hit a key hit (i.e. 500 career HR, or 3000 K)

Thank you for your responses! In my layman's opinion, I would choose Maddux as well.

Curt Schilling » Statistics » Pitching | FanGraphs Baseball

that is your fangraphs stats that show how much you pitched each kind.

from 2002-2007 you were 57% fastball, 22% splitter and slider curve and change all varied with low percentages although it seems like you stopped throwing the slider at the end of your career.

EDIT: Also I was interested in knowing what your opinion is on the steroid/hall of fame issue with people like Clemens, McGwire, Palmeiro.

Ok, tell us what the "XX" pitch was? Admit it! There was Vaseline in that bloody sock!!!!

I keed. I keed.

(Reminds me of one of my favorite load-time quotes. "I didn't use a foreign substance. Vaseline is made in America," Don Sutton).

Curt, I just wanted to thank you for helping to put the Diamondbacks on the map in 2001. I will always be a fan because of what you did that season. 22-6 W/L, 2.98 ERA and then 4-0, 1.12 era in the playoffs. You brought it to the Yankees, and for that you are a huge legend in my book.

Problem is that's not correct. I kept my own pitch by pitch game charts, and logged them religiously. For the most part fangraphs is too reliant on velocity. I threw my 'slider' (and it's in quotes because it was never ever a good pitch, really sucked actually) as hard as my early count fastball, which is where I think there was confusion. In my career I threw over 70% fastballs.

And feel free to ask me anything too.

"who the heck are you?", would be a fair question LOL

Its nice to have somebody that has actually been through all levels of play and situations here giving suggestions. Your input CS can only make a great game better.

Actually, I do have a question. Is OOTP the only baseball game you 'play' or do you play games like MLB The Show on PS3?

The reason I ask is because many people (like me) play these games , 1. Because we like the game (whichever sport) and secondly, because it gives a way to experience something that we never will be able to in real life.

Since you HAVE experienced it all, what does this game provide for you?

Thanks for the incite I always wondered how accurate fangraphs was and while it's nice to have I would take the pitcher's word on it more so.

Yeah, that Johnson/Schilling combo was the most dominant vs. the Yankees in a WS since Koufax/Drysdale in the early 60's. W/o them, I don't think the D'backs would've made the postseason, let alone win it all.

Losing that Series was very painful for any Yankee fan, but it was one helluva a thrilling 7-game ride, for sure.

That leads me to a question I'd like to ask you Curt, which was your most memorable postseason moment:

Winning the NLCS vs. the Braves as a huge underdog with the Phils in '93? (W/o your MVP performance, no way the Phils make the Series, IMO.)

Winning it all in 2001, coming back after those amazing Yankee wins in games 3-5 at the Stadium with that Gonzo soft liner off of Mo?

Or, the Sox comeback in the 2004 ALCS?

Easy enough to determine. Just create a historical league during one of the years that he played and take a look at what OOTP assigns him.

17 games left, just pulled .5 game ahead of the Pirates in the WC. In other news my Rookie team in Elmira is in the title series
The 'favorite moment' question is a loaded one. People in Boston can't fathom ANYTHING comparing to 04. But I grew up in Arizona, and I still believe the '01 series was the best World Series ever played.
They were both incredibly special for different reasons.
My favorite personal moment was the much underrated LDS in 01 vs St Louis. I thought I pitched 18 almost perfect innings, making 1 mistake (and even that wasn't a mistake imo, since the split JD wasn't in a bad spot!)
