The 40 man roster and other stuff

I think I understand the principle of the 40 man roster but I always thought anybody in AAA could be called up to the MLB as a replacement -apparently thats not the case? (Too many years playing Mogul I guess)

I haven't played this game since version 6, I played with the 2011 demo and liked it but I couldn't see any way to hire or fire managers in the game, coaches and scouts, yes but not managers. Is this true or did I just miss something obvious?

Arbitration rules, jesus why does MLB make its employment rules so complicated? Anyway, I get that the top 17 percent of players become eligible for arbitration in their third year and if you have one of them you have to make them an offer or they can become a free agent. I also know that after 6 years they can turn down arbitration and become a free agent. If they aren't Super Twos do they stay on the league minimum (or whatever you paid them) through years 4-6 or do you have to offer arbitration in years 4 or 5?

Check the financials section and look at the salary report. You'll see a dollar figure with an A in parentheses, which indicates when you have to offer arbitration. For example:

Joe Schmo ... $500k(A)

This way you don't have to remember all the rules, just keep checking back to the salary report to figure what to do with contracts.

Thanks for that, my only problem then is that if you want to buy out their arbitration years they won't bite if you wait until they are actually eligible for arbitration. After all you're trying to screw them over - er, get the best value deal - if you're convinced that they have All Star potential and I'm sure the AI knows this, so you have to make the offer before they become eligible, which means knowing exactly where they are in the whole six year cycle

Edit: I found in the manual in the contracts section of the player profile it says whether the player may be eligible next season..perfect!

Not sure what you mean here.

Players on the 40-man roster but who are playing with a minor league club are on option to the minor leagues, and can be moved freely between the majors and minors as long as they have options remaining.

If the player isn't on the 40-man roster, then he has to be added to it first before he can be on the 25-man roster. (And he may only be able to be on the active roster if he has no option years left.)

Le Grande Orange - I haven't played the game since Version 9; and I am having some problems with the 40 man roster on Version 12.

For example; I tried to move Adam Ottavino off of the 40 man roster; the game said he needed to clear waivers. My question would be why would he have to clear waivers to be moved off of the 40 man roster if he has minor league options available?

Any help with managing the 40 man roster better would be greatly appreciated.

Minor league options only cover movement to and from the 25-man roster. Removing any player from the 40-man roster requires them to clear waivers.

You've explained exactly what I thought, if you lose a guy on the active roster to the 15 day DL you can't just bring anybody you like up from the minors to replace him, they have to be on the 40 man roster. I had assumed in the past that the 40 man rosters only 'kicked in' when September 1st rolls round and until then you could bring players up from anywhere in your system, regardless.

That doesn't make any sense to me - unless I am reading into to it wrong.

In order to place a person on the active 25 man roster (major league) they have to be on the 40 man roster; so why would you have to have them clear waivers in order to send them to the minors again - if they have options available? That doesn't make any sense.

For example - in real life the Cardinals recently called up 3B - Matt Carpenter - he was on the Cardinals for about 2 weeks, and they sent him back down to Memphis, he had option years left - was on the 40 man roster -- I am confident he didn't have to clear waivers in order to be sent back down to Memphis.

I would really appreciate clarification on this -- the roster movement part of this game has proved more challening than I remember from past versions.

Thanks,

Rob

You don't need waivers to send a player on the 40-man roster to the minors on optional assignment (well, there is a technical exception, but OOTP doesn't model it so we can ignore it for the purposes of this discussion). You do need waivers when you are removing a player from the 40-man roster and assigning him to a minor league club. This is true regardless of whether the player is on the 25-man active roster or not at the time the removal is contemplated.

Players can be with a minor league club in two ways:

(1) On optional assignment, which means the player is on the 40-man roster;

(2) On outright assignment, which means the player is not on the 40-man roster.

Only players with optional assignment years remaining can be sent on optional assignment. If the player has no options left, then any assignment to the minors can only be an outright one, and outright assignments always require the player to clear waivers first.

Le Grande Orange,

Can you explain the OOTP 12 model then.

I had Adam Ottavino on my 40 man roster; he was playing in AA - has options remaining, why do I have to place him on waivers to take him off of the 40 man roster?

The bolded is why. If you want to remove a player from the 40-man roster that requires waivers. This is true in real life and in OOTP.

If he's on the 40-man roster and with a minor league club, he's already on optional assignment, so you don't need to do anything. If you're taking him off the 40-man roster, that's presumably because you want another player on the 40-man roster in his place.

Greetings. I'm new to OOTP and playing 12. I created an ABL league per suggestions. I have a couple questions: 1) Can you edit names (i.e. change them)? I've looked around but don't find that function.

2)I am starting with a single A team. Maybe I shouldn't of, for I don't have any outfielders. I seem to be putting infield players in the outfield. I understand that at this level you may be changing positions to suit your needs for folks coming up into the Pros for the first time. Do I have to see look at the potential ratings and just try to convert what I think are the best qualities for a particular outfield position? I have some 'Jim Unkowns' too, filling out the roster. How can I swap them out with folks from the draft or whatever. (Or better yet, change there names)?

Thanks
