Not really a bug, but a quirk of the AI trading system. IIRC Franklin wants out by the time the trade deadline rolls around in 2011, he makes a lot of bank, and if Soriano fills a hole for them, the deal makes sense to them. Considering this, you might want to talk STL into giving you a nice prospect in addition to Franklin for taking him off of their hands.

It's rare, but sometimes the game will gift-wrap a player for you. :-)

I have to agree with Spiffe - I have a hard time considering that a "bug." To the extent it is a bad deal on paper, that's not unrealistic. I flash back to the Phillies giftwrapping Bobby Abreu to the Yankees. I'm also not even sure it's a bad deal. I don't know the ratings of the guy you are including with Soriano.

Yep, in my infinite wisdom, I typed the wrong name. I meant to say, I have to agree with Nighthawk. My bad!

Clearly you guys don't manage the Cubs.

I think it's a bug because the #1 problem facing a Cubs GM starting in 2011 is Soriano's contract. It's probably the worst contract in the game. He's a below-average left fielder (1-1.5 star overall rating), 32 years old (and Dominican, so possibly not really even that young, though I'm not sure if the game factors that in), making $16M/year for the next 4 years. It's not like it completely cripples your team, because the Cubs are a big-market team, but it pretty much makes your effective budget $124M instead of $140M. I tried numerous times to offload him in trades, but as soon as he hit the table, the talks were over. I was pretty much resigned, as the Cubs are in real life, to just riding out the contract and making the best of it.

Kyler Burke is an unremarkable 23-year-old 1-star-potential prospect, another outfielder. Ryan Franklin, on the other hand, is a 38-year-old 4.5-star middle reliever, making $3.25M/year in the last year of his contract. He'll be a key contributor for me down the stretch.

Even accounting for variances in teams' evaluations of players, there's no way to logically justify this trade for them. I'm leading the division; St. Louis was 8 games under .500 & out of it. It's not a salary dump. They're not getting a good prospect. They just gave me a very good player in exchange for taking on a gigantic albatross. BTW, I played St. Louis in a series not long afterwards, and Soriano isn't even starting for them. One of the appeals of this game is that you can't just build a superteam by taking advantage of sloppy AI, but in this case it laid a huge egg.

So how fast did it take you to make the trade ? LOL ...I can never get rid of him either. I usually just send him to the minors and then at least he isnt taking up a roster spot. The good news is he stays hurt most of the time.

I have had a similar experience. I have been able to grab good players from time to time without giving up much and I wondered if it were a bug as well.

I grabbed a player named Brandon Belt from the Mets who is a 5 star 1B for a one star catcher.

I recently got Lincecum from Stl for a song, which was good as my stud Haren was getting old stayed hurt and it was time to plug that hole. (Lincecum was 30 at the time and I have had him for 3 full seasons.)

Granted I usually go to teams who are out of it and want to get rid of angry players, but when I select "Make this work now" and see the team include as an option a one star prospect on my farm who will never make the show, it makes me wonder.

Game is still fast and fun though.
