Michael Pineda Nickname
The Seattle sports media has been talking about the need for a nickname for the rookie fireballer. All the fans have been discussing it in comments to stories on MLB.tv and espn. Nobody can really come up with a good one. Any ideas?
People were starting to call him "Prince Pineda" at first. I hated that and wrote some comments about it. Now it seems more are on board with my thinking. He shouldn't be defined by another player. "Prince" to "King Felix". He should have his own legacy. Also mentioned has been "El Fuego", but really I think the jury is still out. Some tidbits about Pineda 22 year old right handed SP 100 mph fastball (usually 96-98 when starting) a naster slider that Dave Neihaus dubbed "diabolical" good enough change up impressive control, command, and poise for a 22 year old rookie Domican Republic, international free agent signee 5-2 with a 2.45 era over 51.1 innings in 8 starts. 52 K's, 1.013 whip “You’re talking about a 6-5, 245-pound guy with a 100 mph fastball as a starting pitcher, which is very rare. He’s young, but he has all the earmarks of being a top-of-the-order starter for years to come.” — Jack Zduriencik, Mariners general manager (some sources have him listed at 6'7") He's been a hard worker, studying Felix and the other M's pitchers deligently whenever he gets a chance. He does get emotional like Felix...getting noticably annoyed with himself after pitching 6 scoreless innings if he gives up a hit and a walk. Now you know some things about him. I figured this would be the best place to get creative nicknames for a baseball player. Last edited by Goody; 05-20-2011 at 10:52 PM. |

Maybe Kingpin. Probably wouldn't work because of King Felix though.

With King Felix, you think Prince Michael would be obvious.

I have him on my fantasy team, he dropped to the last round...go figure.
Anyway, the best nicknames are usually by teammates. Maybe he has a weird habit and we will see an odd name pop out there

DioMike. (this can be construed as :1)Diabolical Mike (hats off to Dave); and 2) Dialed in (unbelievable control for a rookie tossing 96-100 fastballs regularly.)

I've been calling him eñe (pronounced n-yay/enye), because I always want to pronounce his last name as if it was Piñeda instead of Pineda.
That stands no chance of sticking.

Prince seems appropriate though it may sound too Junior when he becomes older.

We call him "Power-Butt" in Seattle because that is where he gets his heat from.

One of the tv announcers brought one up the other day, and I thought..."That's perfect". But I love the contributions so far...except for "Prince". King Felix is a tough act to follow. Don't put him in those shoes. He's not coming in when Felix is 36 and about to retire. Felix just turned 25 and Pineda is 22.
They're not similar at all. Pineda has even more power and command than Felix, but less of a toolbox. Wish I could remember what the guy said the other day. It was either Dave Sims, Mike Blowers, or Dave Valle...I believe. I'd already posted this thread, I heard him say it during the game...and I was like..."yeah...that's it." |

btw, Pineda starts the series against the Yankees tomorrow after they have Thursday off. I think the Yanks will light him up a bit. And I think it will be good for him.
He's just too young, too passionate, for that line up right now. If he proves me wrong...wow. Last edited by Goody; 05-26-2011 at 01:02 AM. |
