I've played OOTP quite a bit in the past for my Apple Games articles. That's how I got to know the OOTP crew and ended up replacing Steve.

I realize it's better if we release the game around Opening Day, but is it that awful if it ships on June 20th? I realize people want to get their hands on it as soon as possible (I'm excited too, believe me), but do you lose anything not having it on Opening Day? You can still sim the season from Opening Day and probably catch up to the real-time schedule pretty quickly, and historical simming is a year-round thing anyway.

I've seen comments from some people, especially on Facebook and Twitter, that by June, they're thinking about football, which I don't understand. I'm a football fan too, but there will still be 3 full months of the season left by the time OOTP 12 ships, plus the post-season.

Turns out Friday the 13th is a lucky day in OOTP world.

Five thousand thanks for a non-modder? I never thought I'd see the day. Thank you for your support.

Disappointed that late May slowly became late June, but as long as this version is at least as good as 11 I will be happy after the dust settles.

So does this mean the game is going to ship with "All-Star Break" Rosters?

I'll keep beating the drum...

Mods, is there any chance of a simple OOTP11 patch that will at least allow us to import the latest Lahman database?

Another month is a lot of lost league time and momentum. This latest announced release date is killing my replay league.

I'll come out and say that I'm disappointed that the official date is now June 20th. Yes, this meets the Spring timeline. Yes, I understand that iOOTP took some time and was necessary. Yes, I understand that it takes a lot of effort to make a great game. That said, I'm expecting a great game, and when I'm looking forward to something with enthusiasm, I always will prefer sooner rather than later.

I don't think my disappointment here is much different from my disappointment that the game doesn't start till 7:30 and it's still only 3 o'clock, or that I have to wait till Christmas to get my presents. I know it's a part of life and there are reasons, and I'll be happy when the time comes, but it doesn't mean that I don't wish it were sooner.

Unless the feature list has changed since February 15th, I have no interest in purchasing this version as a Fictional, solo, non-financial player.

This seems like a throw-away release to me as far as fictional play is concerned given iootp's attention this development cycle.

While an enhanced player creation database and a fancy new skin sound great, there just isn't enough for me to take this version seriously. Especially when OOTP11 is playing like new for me with each league I start.

I am excited about 13 though as it sounds like Markus is ready to take the next big step regarding his 'baby'.

I'll continue to monitor for changes in the feature list and am not ruling out a purchase of 12 completely

I'm trying to remain optimistic and believe that part of the hold up is because of some great additions. If they were going to toss out a warmed over version 11 I'm guessing we'd have it by now.

On May 9, Markus stated:

Work on OOTP 12 was delayed a bit by the hectic last week, but things have calmed down and I am back at it. We are currently preparing the start of beta testing for Wednesday and still hope we will be able to have it released at the end of May if everything goes well.

Alright, that's it for now I'll keep you posted!

Cheers,
Markus

I can only think that since testing started (Wednesday was May 11), something has caused the release date to move almost a month. Disappointed, to say the least.

If that's true, then Markus, on Monday, announces beta will begin Wednesday. It does not begin on Wednesday. When Friday rolls around, he's pushed release back by at least three weeks.

Crap....during my move and honeymoon too. Luckily for me, this won't be the first time OOTP has come at an inconvenient time, and new versions of OOTP are usually familiar enough that I can get the new version installed but be patient in my urge to let it loose while I get more important things done.

I think that Markus has probably had time for a full assessment of the release plan, and his decision to move the release date to June 20 may have a lot to do with how best to handle an already disappointing circumstance for all involved.

His options were probably to release the game ASAP, but perhaps without the ability to do a proper amount of testing or include all the intended features; or delay the release by a few weeks and subsequently delay testing a bit so that it begins when the game is truly ready for it.

I don't think people would have gone for releasing an incomplete or insufficiently tested game, so my assumption is that the choice was made to delay the game until June 20 so Markus can have the maximum possible time and still technically release OOTP 12 in the spring.

The major feature that Markus had announced for an overhaul was the financial system. As soon as I heard that announcement, I expected a lengthy delay in the release of OOTP 12. This was before iOOTP was even on the immediate horizon.

Supposedly, the financial system has always been one of the most complicated aspects of the game code. And while I know that Markus always has the best intentions and is a talented developer, sometimes taking on the toughest possible task can be harder than expected.

With some delays due to iOOTP's release and then the challenge of overhauling an area of the game that is perhaps the toughest to change, my guess is that the financial overhaul is probably the main reason why the game has been pushed back further.

I'm less concerned about the release date being pushed back as I am with that short of a Beta Testing. I was on the beta team the last couple of versions and I can't imagine trying to get out a relatively bug free release in just over a month of testing, unless of course there aren't many new features to test.

This is one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't moments in life for Markus. Strip down the feature list and rush through the beta to get it out as promised or suffer the wrath of an already impatient customer base.

I sincerely hope that the time spent on iOOTP pays off for Markus.

What Markus said in the release date announcement thread seems to bear this out:

Quote:
After the release, we will continue to work on OOTP 12 and provide free patches and updates frequently. We will add some more immersion features in a free update, for example, and we're also looking to add more playoff customization options later on. So, OOTP 12 will be improved throughout the baseball season.
