Resigning players who tell you they will retire

Not sure if this has been discussed but...

Got an e-mail from Fred McGriff early in the 2003 season telling me he wanted to spend time with his family and was going to retire after the season. However, I was still able to offer him an extension and he accepted. His current salary was 3,832,000 a year and I was able to get him to agree to anything from 1-7 years at 2.25 million a year until I "blew my chance".

Now obviously, it's one of a couple things. 1) McGriff didn't really want to retire and is lured back for the money and a guaranteed contract or 2) it's a bug. I'd like to know if others had similar issues.
