I'm a minor league manager in OOTP 11 ...

and the game says that I need to give adequate playing time to the most talented players. There are only two ways of going about knowing WHO those talented players are: ratings and historical data. As far as I can tell, there is little to nothing in the way of historical data to go on, so that leaves me with using the ratings. But, being that I am a baseball purist and want to evaluate players based on their stats there is the obvious conflict. To my untrained statistical mind it seems that in real life there is a strong correlation between palyers' past performances and what they can be expected to do, while in OOTP statistics are just a cosmetic touch. Can someone please shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

A few thoughts.

(1) As a minor league manager, part of your job is to meet the goals of the organization. If I were a GM, I certainly wouldn't want a minor league manager who managed his team as if he owned it.

(2) Stats are nice, but you must always consider their context. If, let's say, Bryce Harper bats .150 this April, would the Nationals then bench him in favor of another kid who's batting .300? Of course not! The sample size is small; greater weight should be put on his glowing scouting reports.

(3) If you like, you can turn the ratings off and just view the stats. It's probably best to have college/high school feeder leagues so you can have a statistical background on each player.

There is no shortage of baseball purists who play this game, and hover around these boards. Thick as fleas really ...

Perhaps if you described more specifically what you thought you'd be seeing in a game like this, you might get some useful suggestions or explanations.

That's a real problem, Steve. I'm not entirely sure I even know what I want, or what I should be wanting. But chatting with you guys is doing wonders, I think.

I guess my first suggestion would be to regard the ratings as an abstracted analogy for a player's physical and mental gifts -- his "tools". While it might be nice to have his high school stats, I suspect most scouts would have less regard for those than they would his physical capabilities. However, a computer sim like OOTP can't display the latter, in any event. It can only give the guy ratings.

As you watch a guy perform on your team -- and accumulate stats in the process -- you can refine your view of what the ratings (his apparent "tools") seem to be telling you.

At least, that's how I look at it.

Look at your team reports, the top prospect rankings, and then the history of every player on the minor league team you're managing.

Top prospects + top draft picks get first billing.

As in... Wilmer Flores is starting at shortstop in St. Lucie this year, not Matt Bouchard. Ya know?
