New 1954 League: Born to Play

Born to Play is a 1954 historical league. The major twist is that rookies are assigned to their original teams rather than using a draft. To preserve competitive balance the league will use a very tight cap designed to promote player movement like in the NFL. In general, there are no other significant changes from standard settings or twists to the league and again, in general, the league will follow MLB history. More information in the rules on league webpage. Some notable setting changes do include injuries set on low, no recalc, 1-10 ratings and no coaches or scouts.

See below for open teams, we are looking to get underway around Sunday. If interested in joining BTP, please send me an e-mail with your name, geographical location (i.e. Baltimore, Maryland), e-mail, OOTP board name and team preferences. Please also briefly tell me about yourself. I’d be interested in knowing about what you do with your life, what kind of OOTP experience you have, why you want that team or teams and why you’re interested in joining BTP. You don’t have to touch on every topic, I am just trying to put a “face” to a name.

For example: I'm Robert. I live in College Park, Md. and am a 25-year-old undergraduate at that school. I work part-time for public relations at a nearby community college where I used to work full-time. I also do a lot of photography. I picked the Orioles because they're my favorite team. From 2003-2006 I commissioned a real player baseball mogul league, then moved that league to a 1996 OOTP historical league. Later I commissioned Boys of Summer, created by Stacy Bond, and also created the first Born to Play which was sort of a complex league. Since then, when I was usually in at least eight leagues, I've been less involved with OOTP, but have been getting back into it and now that my life has settled down I've created a new league.

Let's get rid of the last six teams:

Cleveland Indians: For some reason, the best teams always go last. The Indians were the champions in '54 behind a 111-43 record. They went there on the arms of one of the best rotations in the bigs with 20-game winners Early Wynn and Bob Lemon, 19-game winner Mike Garcia, a promising 26-year-old Art Houtteman and the old veteran Bob Feller. With Larry Doby in CF, they will be good for a long time.

St. Louis Cardinals: The St. Louis Cardinals may not be right where we'd expect a Cardinals franchise to be. But if you need to do some building, Stan Musial - who hit .330 in 1954 - is a great cornerstone.

Chicago White Sox: With 94 wins, the White Sox were the only team other than the Yankees and Indians to finish over .500 in the AL in 1954. Perhaps that's why all the NL teams went first. The White Sox are a veteran blue collar team without many household names. George Kell is on the roster and at 31 still has many good seasons left.

Boston Red Sox: Take Boston and you still have Ted Williams for a couple more seasons. Need I say more? Williams put up a .345-.513-.635 line in '54.

Washington Senators: Like Boston, there's pretty much one decisive reason to take the Senators. An 18-year-old Harmon Killebrew on the roster. Managing Killebrew from his first cup of coffee to his last year homerun is a great opportunity for anyone.

Philadelphia Athletics: The Athletics aren't good at all. They're the team to take if you're the sort who goes after a big challenge.

If the Cardinals are still available I would like the chance to be their owner. I currently play in the USBLM league and BTL on-line OOTP 11 baseball leagues. I'm a huge Cardinal fan and mostly care for the nostalgia and replay value, of course winning the series or sticking it to the Cubs isn't bad either!

Interested in joining this league. My name is Ray, I'm 33 years old, married with 2 kids, and I'm a Firefighter/Paramedic in Denton Texas. Have a lot of spare time on my hands and just recently found OOTP Baseball. Have been an avid Fantasy Baseball player since it really started becoming popular/available on the internet back in the 90's. Where most people I know don't have the patience to make lineup changes for a 162 game season, I really thrive on the meticulous nature of it!

I would like to take over the Washington Senators, but I was wondering if I would have to follow them to Minnesota in '61 or if I could follow their move to Texas in '72 instead?

Let me know if the team is still open and if I can step into the GM spot for them. This league looks really cool, and I'm looking forward to it!

The 1954 World Series is getting underway and we have two open teams:

The Washington Senators have never a dedicated owner in their first two seasons but despite a lousy pedigree and lousy ownership have surprised with over .500 records each season. Could a dedicated owner make something special of this team? You have the option of moving the team to Minnesota in 1961.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are not the best, but have some pieces in Bob Friend (18-15 with a 3.57 ERA) and Frank Thomas (.287-26-97) plus a young 21-year-old OF called Roberto Clemente.

Get 'em quickly! Teams tend to go fast.
