5 points down with three minutes to go in the Conference Championship...

...and you don't do an on-side kickoff?!??!?!

WTF is that?!~?!?!?!??/

I'm not a Jets fan but that is some crazy $h!t. Why didn't Rex just cross the field and shake Tomlin's hand then and there?

They had 3 timeouts. It's understandable.

Was that with the 2 minute warning as well ? I go with you, I think the Jets are thinking the way Pittsburgh were playing they could have stopped them and got the ball back with like 1:30 on the clock.

Exactly. If you do an onside kick it's not guaranteed you're getting the ball back and if you miss than the game is over.

The Steelers hadn't played well offensively the 2nd half. They needed a stop and they had 2 chances to do it. They missed on both.

Yeah, they had 3 TOs + the 2min TO. I don't blame them for that.

So they strived and fought their way back into the game all through the second half and when victory is finally within reach instead of trying to get the ball back in good field position they gamble on the fact that they MIGHT be able to get it back near their own goal line if they can force the Steelers to punt?

Sorry, but the stupidity of that is just mind boggling. I would have more respect for the coach if he had gone for the on-side kick. At least they would not have died wondering. That comeback they made became worthless as soon as they kicked the ball down field.

In the football world 3 minutes left with 3 timeouts and the 2 minute warning is a lifetime.

Onside kicks are a last resort. Not when your defense just caused a safety and kept the other team scoreless all half.

Whatever. Maybe it's the fact that I'm from Australia, where this sort of strategy would be frowned upon.

But tell me this...

What would be the difference between going for the on-side kick (and having a chance of getting it back) but not getting it back and kicking it down field and having no chance of getting it back?

20 yards? 30?

You say the game would be over, but you also said they didn't believe that Pittsburgh would be able to move the ball so what difference would another 20 or 30 yards make?

Considering the fact that onside kicks are converted less than 10% of the time, whereas the Jets were playing strong defense in the second half, and had 3 timeouts, it was the right call.

Now if only we get a legitimate NFL quarterback we can actually win these types of games.

I guess it just amazes me that they knew they might not get the ball back again but didn't even try to increase their chances of doing so with the on-side kick.

Onside kick and a couple first downs and Pittsburgh could kick a FG pretty easily................dude, you just don't understand the fact that 3 minutes/3 TO/2:00 Warning is a lifetime in football. Especially when you're defense has been playing great.

Sorry, but you're wrong.

Their chances of getting a defensive stop are much higher than recovering an onside kick.

Another big factor that makes it a turnoff on that side of the 2 minute warning is the fact that if Pittsburgh recovers the onside kick, they're in Jet territory.

Unless your defense stinks or their offense is awesome, it doesn't really increase your chances of getting the ball back with that much time left.

Kicking deep was absolutely the right thing to do! The Jets D is stout, and had proven itself over and over in the second half. I think that the Steelers had about 29 passing yards in the second half to that point or something similar. They had stoned them, and with essentially 4 time outs left (including the 2 min TO) they were gambling that they could create a 3 and out giving them the ball back in good field position and time left on the clock.

The only thing they forgot to do was stop them on 3rd down, which ended the game. Believe me, I'm a Browns fan (insert joke here) and I couldn't STAND to see that team from western Pa. advance to the SB. I will be rooting for the Packers!

Don't forget that when the other team has the ball, there's a chance they'll screw up and give it away. Your side could force a fumble or get an interception. That's at least as likely as it recovering an onside kick.

As folks have said, three minutes remaining with four effective timeouts left is long time.

Probably around 30 yards. If they kick deep and dont allow a first down they are are getting the ball back with more than 3 minutes left around their 40 yardline. If they go for the onside and dont get it and force them 3 and out they are getting the ball inside their own 20 more than likely which makes it extemely difficult to score a TD.

kc, others have said everything that can be said, but kicking the ball in that situation was the correct thing to do. Now, if there were a minute left, then doing an onside kick is mandatory, but with 3 minutes and 3 timeouts plus the 2 minute warning left, there is no need to attempt an onside kick.

Best case scenario, the Jets defense causes the Steelers to go 3 and out and punt the ball. The Jets would still have 2+ minutes left to try to score.

Even if they let the Steelers get a first down or two and then force a punt, the Jets would still have a minute or so to get the ball and try to score.

An onside would have been too risky because it is not a sure thing and if the Steelers get the ball it most likely would have been between the Jets 40 and 45 yard line. The Steelers then would have only needed 10 to 15 yards to kick a field which would require the Jets to go for 2 points if they were able to get the ball back and score a TD.

99.99% of the time, the correct thing to do is what the Jets did and kick the ball deep and hope the defense can stop them and get the ball back with over a minute left in the game.
