players in triplicate
I have been trying to run a quasihistorical league with an expanded number of teams, going up to 30 or 32 clubs as early as the first quarter of the 20th century. Obviously, this would require extra players, and my idea was to use a first-year draft without adding fictional players to the pool. Instead, to simulate the dilution of talent, I would allow ghost players but fill the AAA rosters every year with fictionals, leaving those playes for the major league teams to draw on.
This seemed like a straightforward idea, and I began in 1904, starting with the sixteen real teams and expanding one league or the other by two teams each season. By the end of the 1906, however, I realized I had three different versions of the players in each draft class. When I saw I had three each of Ty Cobb and Hal Chase I realized I had a real problem. I don't want to live in a world with three Cobbs and three Chases, and I don't think anybody should have to.
I've never seen players multiply like this before. Does anyone know what could be causing it? I've had little experience with expansion drafts, and one thing that strikes me is that I just about immediately before the first year draft, in order to let the new teams participate in the latter draft. Could that be causing confusion in the draft pool?
