AI Subbing Players With Poor Positional Ratings Over "Utility" Backups

Why does the AI sub players with low positional ratings during the regular season, in-game, when there is a useful "utility" player to put it at the position?

Is it because the utility player is a not as good a hitter?

For instance, sometimes it'll put the backup catcher in at first base instead of the utility man, even though he might only barely have better hitting ratings, despite being "outdone" at the positional rating by 15-16 points on the 1-20 scale.

There is a game configuration setting that makes fielding prowress matter more. It is in the game setup menu but be sure to read the manual before you change it.

Not sure that addresses the OP. I think you are referring to the ability to make fielding count more when the game calculates the outcomes of BIPs. However, I believe the OP was wondering why the AI opts for a guy with lower position ratings. And I believe his speculation is correct: the AI gives more weight to hitting than to fielding. And in OOTP, one can have a pretty low position rating and still play the position OK. If you make fielding more important to outcomes, than this may no longer be so true -- but the AI will still give more weight to hitting.

At least, I think all that is true ...

Yeah the engine config setting for defensive influence increase the effect of individual player defensive ratings on play outcomes. The AI decisions on player substitution is highly biased to offense. Part of the problem is that players have too many position ratings and the threshold for reasonable defensive performance is too low.

Thanks for the answers! I was getting pretty flummoxed by the AI's substitutions when I was carrying a player I had on the roster for the specific purpose of playing competently at any infield position.
