RIP Bennie Briscoe
Bennie died this afternoon, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
I remember reading about his late-career upsets of the much younger Richie Bennett and Norberto Sabater in The Ring, later learning what a true bad-ass he was in his prime.

RIP Bennie Briscoe
Sports in Brief: Bennie Briscoe dies at age 67
Former Philadelphia middleweight Bennie Briscoe died Tuesday evening at age 67, promoter J. Russell Peltz said. Briscoe had been in Temple University Hospital for about a week before being moved to hospice, Peltz said. The Georgia-born Briscoe had a 66-24-5 record with 53 knockouts in a professional career that spanned from 1966 to 1982. In the golden era of Philadelphia middleweights, the 1970s, Briscoe fought champions Marvin Hagler, Vito Antuofermo, Rodrigo Valdez, Emile Griffith, and Carlos Monzon.

Bennie was clearly one of the best of his time, and I believe he would have been champion in another era. Rest in Peace.

Tonight I was watching a clip of some of his highlights on YouTube. It looks as if he put the entire weight of his body into each and every punch!
Look at his career...what a story! I scratch my head wondering why boxing isn't more popular. All the history, all the great stories. All the great warriors who are so amazing at their craft they just take your breath away.
