When you read an article in the local newspaper about the Rule 5 Draft... and understand it, because you had to learn how it worked to play OOTP.

When you can name more players and recite more history about your OOTP team than your city's real MLB team.

I do this all the time. Who needs play by play?

I have a notebook that I take to work and often write down different lineup ideas, notes on certain players, ideas for future trades, etc. I can also name all starters, top prospects, most of my Triple-A roster, and a handful of players I wish I had never gotten rid of.

I also get an odd attachment to certain players. Sometimes it is because I drafted them and never expected them to start at the big league level or I picked them up in a deal that I am very proud of. I just cannot get rid of some of these players even if they deserve it.

Here's a question for ya, how man of you have caught yourself getting angry at your computers while playing out OOTP games?

This is why that new Manager Notes and Reminders feature is so handy.

Me too. I have a thing for savvy, workaholic catchers with high leadership skills and great defensive ratings who struggle to keep their batting averages above .200. Same for utility infielders. I like to envision these guys in the clubhouse after a tough loss.

I have a sentimental attachment to shortstops who hit .330 with 40 homers. Sometimes I hang onto them even where their production dips into the .300 25 homer range.

Actually, in my league where I'm changing teams every 1-2 years, nearly every year I've picked up a certain infielder who has been in the league for 15 plus years because he is a lock to hit around .300 or higher, can play all positions effectively, is very cheap, and is incredibly easy to obtain in a trade. When you are rebuilding a team, its wonderful to have a couple dependable guys.

This, I picked up the top closer in my league, he had just come off a Cy Young season. He was 10-2 with 39 saves, 80IP, 1.46ERA, 1.04 WHIP, .190OAVG, only 4 blown saves and a VORP of 34.2 (not too shabby for a closer).

This season after getting a 3 year deal worth of $10,000,000 per year, plus incenmtives to make it worth over $11,000,000 per year likely, he has blown 4 of 13 opportunities thus far this year. His ERA is still a respectible 2.65 and WHIP 1.24, but the 4 lost saves right now mean fighting for wild card position rather than leading my division.

I know many will question the wisdom of paying big money to a closer, but my closer last year had the following line: 5-4 with 25 saves, 53.2IP, 4.70 ERA, 1.45WHIP, .267OAVG, 7 blown saves and a VORP of 5.2.

If you are curoius, I am the Jays, my closer last year was Scott Downs, this year is Rafael Soriano.

Anyway, getting mad at fake players is the thing that makes me feel like I am addicted. My game is on my work laptop which comes home with me everyday, so it is tough to not go in and play a little. I just went in to get you the numbers above.

My wife and I record shows and watch them together after the kids are in bed, and I play OOTP while we watch, she gets frustrated when I have to rewind all the time. I play while watching hockey and football. I find it tough to play while watching baseball, just because I get the two games mixed up in my head (if I am winning in my game and the Jays are losing on TV or vise-versa, which might be harder now since I am doing a Jays league in OOTP, though I should be far enough ahead by spring training that my team will not resemble the 2011 Jays).

You know you're an ootp junkie when..

You see your shortstop, John Fletcher, out in public...
and you want to go up and talk to him.

(my wife didn't let me)

happy gaming,
Frank

I think you guys all have serious issues.....

I only play OOTP for 15 minutes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings during my self-time after group and all the players in my league have "FICTIONAL PERSON" as their nickname to remind me that there is a difference between the real world and my imagination. And Dr. Paulsen made me turn off the option for drug suspensions as I am not supposed to have anything to to with chemicals anymore, but sometimes when someone is on the Disabled List, I pretend that he is in rehab. And sometimes he meets nice people there and some of them are sometimes women who are attractive to look at with your eyes......

Huh? To the rest of your post, that is.

To this portion quoted above, I reply "Yeah, and you spend the rest of your free time in these forums!"

OOTP is the perfect definition of a schedule one drug. No medical purpose and a high tendency to be abused. Side effects include screaming, shouting, child neglect, and procrastination at the office.

Caution: Play at you're own risk.
