Pitching, speed, a clean up hitter and a lead off man.

Never fails, but defense is important too

Well sure, but how do you build a team? Nearly all of my players were either drafted by me or brought up through my farm system either after being acquired in a trade or signed internationally.

Even still, you'll see veterans hit their decline earlier with a weaker work ethic.

There's only one attribute that helps on both sides of the ball and that's speeeeeeed. Find fast contact hitters who can steal and play the old fashioned hit and run/run and hit style of ball and you'll have no trouble maintaining a .720 to .850 w%. That is if you have at least 2 pitchers who can throw.

My routine upon taking over the worst team in baseball is to put top notch defenders up the middle first, and then elsewhere. I do start bringing in pitching, usually MRs at first, then in the draft.

In season 2 or 3, by having great defense my rotation begins to look better to the other teams and I can start trading starters for hitters, with the knowledge I have prostpects getting ready.

By season 3 or 4, I'm in the middle of the pennant race with a dynasty in sight.

I don't agree at all. I know many feel that someone with high intelligence/work ethic are more likely to reach their potential or get ratings boosts; but it isn't a requirement to develop or become a boom player. Example (and I could point out many more): Player Report for #41 Jim Pineda

Greedy little twat aint he....i like the fact that he was such a low draft pick with success. since tram has made that comment i have looked at players who i have drafted, he does have a point to a degree but i think it comes down to drafting philosophy....do u want to draft the ryan leafs of the world or the palmers, sanchez'.etc

Every league that I've won a championship in I've done it through top notch pitching, speed and defense. Power is nice if you can get it...but if you can field a lineup with 5-6 guys who can steal 50+ bases a year then you can win a lot of 3-2 and 2-1 games.

I can't think of a single time I've won a title in any league where I did it with thumpers.

If you ignore defense and focus instead on pitching and offense you will win more games. Try it.

I've tried it. I ended up 30 games under .500.

Maybe you're just getting lucky, because from my experience defense is a pretty essential key to success.

In a turn-around situation, you can quickly acquire defense and MR, but hitting and starting pitching not so easily. Bad teams don't have the resources to go after hitting and starting pitching the first season or two.

Personally I like to use the tried and true formula of building up the middle, starting of course with starting pitching. IMO, very good starting pitching can mask the flaws of a ballclub, which allows you to compete as you correct those flaws throughout the years. That to me is the name of the game, keeping fannies in the seats while you attempt to build a winner.
