Marquez-Katsidis SPOILERS

Didn't see it but from what I've read it's a fight of the year candidate. Marquez was down in the 4th but eventually overcame Katsidis' brave resisitance, the referee stopping it in the 9th.

It was a pretty good fight. Marquez was down in the third, but came back strong.

Great win for Jason Litzau as well. Caballero had been looking for a fight at 126 and local Matt Remillard was rumored to have turned it down.

At 5'7" to Litzau's 5'10" I'm not sure Remillard would have posed the same problems for Caballero, but he is somewhat similar to Litzau in style. Considering Caballero had to cut weight at the last hour just to make 130, maybe it could have been Matt getting the W last night, cuz Caballero sure looked like crap.

Thought I saw something live that was puzzling and having just watched the replay of Litzau-Caballero, I did.

Litzau was trying to say something to the HBO crew while waiting for the decision to be announced and Larry Merchant gave him a thumbs down motion -- twice. This, after Merchant saying he had Litzau winning. Maybe he was just perturbed that Jason was distracting him while trying to talk, I dunno. It was weird.

LOL, I think that was it but you're right, it was weird.

Like Larry was thinking: "I'm the star about to make another brilliant point, don't interrupt me kid!"

Great fight, hopefully Manny mans up and makes the 3rd fight. If Pac is this larger than life, Armstrong, Hearns, Langford like fighter he will take on the challenge of Marquez for a third time. That's what the truly special fighters do even when they could make the same money fighting a punching bag like Clottey or Margarito. Lets hope he wants to be as great as message boarders want him to be.

I'd rather see that than Floyd/Pac right now. Marquez deserves it.

Wonder if it's @ 140 like Juan wants or @ 147?

I think Manny's just going to be too big & strong for him now, maybe Manny deserves a break after fighting all these guys who were bigger than him.

His 37 years & all the wars he's been in might catch up with him against Manny too.

I thought the "double thumbs down" from Merchant was weird, as well. I didn't hear what Jason was saying and Merchant was giving him credit right before....I initially thought that maybe Jason said something about Caballero's performance, prompting Larry to give the thumbs down. I wouldn't see why Larry would do that "at" Jason, but you never know. If that is the case, why haven't I ever saw Larry do that to any other fighter (Roy Jones for example) that feels the need to speak directly to the HBO broadcasters. I am very happy for Jason, and if I'm correct, he didn't get a post fight interview.

As far as Marquez, I don't necessarily have a horse in the race, but I think Manny crushes him at any weight above 135. I do appreciate the praise that Marquez gets and he is a tremdous fighter, but what was the deal with the Mayweather fight (or non fight)? I actually PAID for that fight and still hold a lot of disappointment towards Marquez.

I am mindful of the weight differential and Mayweather is in his own league, but that much of a blow out?? Good small guys have been fighting good big guys for years and much of the time, are at least competitive. What happened to the genius of JMM? His outstanding ability to adjust his gameplan to a slick boxer? His tremendous body punching? His "high level" strength training to go up in weight effectively? Help from his highly intelligent trainer? None of these factors existed in Marquez's only appearance above 135, so I have to go by what I've seen myself.

Very good post/points dragon. From that fight we can see what a tough, skilled fighter Juan is but he was pushed in that fight, Manny's a totally different animal. I know Juan's been in with him before but he might be looking @ it as one last big payday before he retires. You're right, Floyd made him look like he was a club fighter by comparison.

It was kinda odd but here is my take...I think if you Look at it Merchant was giving the thumbs down to diebella. Litzau was talking to steward and Diebella was over to his left saying something to Merchant. Merchant points at diebella and then gives him the "double thumbs down".

Good call, ACGord! Here is a section from Dan Rafael's (ESPN) blog today:

• Many of you have tweeted me to ask about Larry Merchant's thumbs-down signal that was caught on camera during the HBO broadcast following Litzau's upset victory against Caballero. Merchant made the motion as Litzau leaned toward the broadcast table after the victory, and many have wrongly assumed he was dissing Litzau. Merchant was motioning his opinion about Caballero's poor performance toward Lou DiBella, Caballero's promoter, who was in the ring and who had gone over to the broadcast table side of the ring.
