Are there any good broadcasters left?

These TBS Announcers are just awful. I feel bad for John Smoltz, he is trying to carry them but Ron Darling can't even speak without sounding like he is gasping for air.

Are there any good announcers left anywhere for national games? I guess not.

Buck Martinez is a very good broadcaster.

So is Bob Uecker.

I always liked Jon Miller.
And I don't think Smoltz is carrying anyone. He is completely out of his depth in the broadcast booth.

I like Darling, but it's probably because I watch a lot of Mets games with Gary Cohen, Hernandez, and Darling, who are imo the best booth in baseball.

I also like Jon Miller, always have.

And while Ernie Johnson isn't great (his a bit out of his element with baseball), and his calls and excitement sound forced at times, he is better than listening to Chip Carey.

Best booth in baseball?? While Vin Scully is still working?? You must be joking.

The combination of Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy in Boston is about as good of a combo that you'll get for a baseball broadcast. Though Orsillo just doesn't have the same rapport (naturally) with whatever random color guy he is working with when he does nationally televised playoff games.

As a Reds fan I feel blessed to have the Brennamans as our main PBP guys. Marty on teh radio and Thom on the TV side are as good as it gets. Thom's call of Bruce's division clinching homerun still gives me goosebumps. I think he does a very nice job on Fox national broadcasts as well. The two of them working together is sometimes obnoxious, though!

Thom's Call of Bruce's Clincher

My Indians have Matt Underwood and former Indian Rick Manning on the TV side. I far prefer the radio team of Tom Hamilton and Mike Hegan.

My rule of thumb is "if they aren't John Sterling and Suzzie Q, they are good"

Between Sterling setting up constantly to make one of his trite 'tradmark' calls and Suzzie swooning over that dreamy Jeter, they make me want to puke.

No, but I don't have cable so I just get the FOX guys. Though I admit, liking announcers is pretty subjective.

I do like Thom Brennaman for all sports. I liked Marty too before he got crotchety.

Jon Miller is the only national guy left that I really enjoy. I miss being able to hear Vin Scully calling games.

He (Miller) at least has some personality; I can understand that. Even Joe Morgan can be insightful at times.

Scully is obviously the gold standard. Though I tend to be bias toward radio guys.

I like Jon Miller for baseball games and Al Michaels for football. On the football front I don't actually mind Chris Collinsworth, but I get why people can find him annoying.

Slightly OT, but I would like to hear Jim Ross call a football game (apparently he used to / still does call games for a college somewhere?).

Lets not forget Martin Tyler in the other football. His "Brilliant...wonderful..glorious...Germany!!" after the fourth German goal against Argentina was classic.

Martin Tyler is a gem. There are quite a few good footy commentators in the UK, as well as plenty of bad ex-players who have no business behind the mic.

I agree. I am growing very tired of the ESPNization of American broadcasting; a bunch of guys who shriek and hype and are over the top. The UK broadcasters are for the most part calm, intelligent and they actually report the game without insulting our intelligences or hyping other programming.

I must say I love the ESPN tennis commentating..except for Chris 'Know it All' Fowler. Here we have a bunch of ex Jocks who are knowledgeable, funny and entertaining.

Well, to me, Harry Kalas is, was and always will be the gold standard.

Tim McCarver:
