Jake Tuli vs Mickey McKay - Tuli pounded away on McKay for 14 rounds, scoring a knockdown in the 12th round, then survived being knocked down by McKay half way through the 15th round to win the decision 10-5, 12-3 and 11-4.

South Africa - Bantamweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Mbulelo Botile vs Willie Smith - Botile was in control early in this fan pleaser as he scored a knockdown in the 7th then held on as Smith tried valiantly to come from behind in the latter stages of the fight.

Silence Mabuza vs Jake Tuli - Tuli scored a knockown in a huge first round then went back and forth until the 5th round where he pounded on Mabuza so badly that his corner threw in the towel with 7 seconds left in the round for the upset TKO by Tuli!

Vic Toweel vs Tshifhiwa Munyai - Munyai did well in the first 2/3rds of the fight, countering well and moving as if on air. He faded in the final 5 rounds however and Toweel took firm control to win the decision 9-6, 9-6 and 8-7. Experts were shocked at the closeness of the decision.

Arnold Taylor vs Simpiwe Vetyeka - Taylor had his way with Vetyeka softening him with a good body attack before scoring the KO as time ran out in the 5th round.

South Africa - Jr. Bantamweights - Semi-Finals & Final

There are 4 fighters in the Jr. Bantamweight Division.

Semi-Finals:

Masibulele Makepula vs Zamumzi Xola - Makepula was dominant as he kept Xola in front of him by effectively cutting off the ring. Knockdowns in the 9th and 2 more in the 10th round ended things in this 10 round KO.

Evans Mbamba vs Vuyisile Bebe - A good close action bout was ended in the 10th when Bebe suffered not one but two bad cuts that caused the ring doctor to order the fight stopped. Mbamba was up 6-3, 5-4 and 6-3 through 9.

Final:

Masibulele Makepula vs Evans Mbamba - An action packed bout that saw Mbamba up through 10 only to have Makepula take over, scoring a pair of knockdowns in the 13th and another in the 14th round before the fight was ended later in the round for the TKO. Makepula improves to 2-0-0 (2) as he earns his way into the World Tournament.

South Africa - Flyweights - Quarter-Finals

We have 8 fighters, a nice even number to set up the Quarter-Finals in the Flyweight Division.

Quarter-Finals:

Dennis Adams vs Young Berry - A dominant performance by Adams as he took every round against an overmatched Berry, scoring a knockdown in the 5th then the KO in the 6th.

Zohle Mbityi vs Young Sultan - Mbityi wasted little time, landing 12 straight shots then scoring the KO 58 seconds into the fight.

Moruti Mthalane vs Akhona Aliva - Mthalane was well in control of this fight despite repeated fouls. The referee got fed up in the 7th however after Mthalane landed yet another low blow and disqualified him.

Mzukisi Sikali vs Peter Mathebula - Sikali used pure agression to build up a solid lead then pounded Mathebula unmercifully in the 9th round to earn the TKO.

Semi-Finals:

Dennis Adams vs Akhona Aliva - Adams was in control throughout, scoring knockdowns in the 12th, 14th and 15th rounds enroute to an 11-4, 11-4, 10-5 decision.

Zohle Mbityi vs Mzukisi Sikali - A relatively uneventful fight as Mbityi spent most of the fight on his bicycle while Sikali stalked in a plodding fashion until the 11th when Sikali landed a hard shot right on the left eye of Mbityi, tearing the eyelid and ending the fight for the TKO on cuts.

Final:

Dennis Adams vs Mzukisi Sikali - An all out brawl that saw both men down while Adams had both eyes near closed yet he fought a valiant fight. It went the distance with the judges rightfully scoring a close bout 9-5 Adams, 8-7 Sikali and 8-7 for Sikali, who improves to 3-0-0 (2) heading into the World Tournament.

South Africa - Jr. Flyweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals -

Jake Matlala vs Dexter Dhlamini - Matlala destroyed Dhlamini in the 1st round, scoring the KO as time ran out.

Muvhuso Nedzanani vs Ayanda Barnabas - Nedzanani started out slow, but came on strong scoring a knockdown in the 5th then continuing the carnage in the 6th before the referee stepped in to save Barnabas from further harm.

Vuyani Nene vs Pillay Duiker - Nene built up a lead then was knocked down by Duiker in the 11th. That seemed to wake him up as he took over from there, scoring a knockdown of his own in the 13th while dominating the latter rounds. In the 15th both men went for the KO with the best action round of the fight though it went the distance. The judges scored it 10-5, 11-4 and 9-6 for Nene.

Monelisi Mhikiza Myekeni vs Godfrey Nkate - Myekeni spent too much time moving and not enough time fighting as Nkate scored a pair of knockdowns to pull out the narrow 4-6, 7-5 and 9-6 split decision.

South Africa - Jr. Flyweights - Semi-Finals & Final

Semi-Finals:

Jake Matlala vs Godfrey Nkate - Matlala bullied Nkate thorughout, finally wearing him down with a blistering attack in the 9th and 10th before the referee ended it for the 10th round TKO. Nkate suffered a cut over the right eye and had his right eye near shut on top of that.

Muvhuso Nedzanani vs Vuyani Nene - Nene landed a perfect combination for the 1st knockdown, followed by a wicked right cross for the 2nd then piled on the damage in the 1st to score the TKO with 42 seconds left in the round.

Final:

Jake Matlala vs Vuyani Nene - Tough battle that saw Matlala cut due to an accidental butt in the 8th. His corner closed it and they went the distance with the judges rightfully scoring a close bout 9-6 Nene, 8-7 Matlala and 8-7 for the winner Matlala. He heads into the World Tournament with a 3-0-0 (2) record.

South Africa - Strawweights - Round 1

Top seeded Nkosinathi Joyi will recieve the bye in this 15 man tourney.

Round 1:

Zolani Petelo vs Simphiwe Mfaniso - Petelo started very slow in this one, but still was slightly in the lead when he started landing bomb after bomb on Mfaniso in the 8th round to force the TKO late in the round.

Sithembele Kibiti vs Zolile Ngantweni - Kibiti was in control from the opening bell, landing shots at will then landing a picture perfect uppercut to lay Ngantweni out for the count with 14 seconds left in the 1st.

Zukisani Kwayiba vs Wele Maqolo - Kwayiba was having suprising difficulty with Maqolo, when in the 6th round Maqolo landed a low blow followed by a blatant head butt to be disqualified, handing Kwayiba the win.

Tshepo Lefele vs Steve Msimanga - This started out as a back and forth barn burner with Msimanga forging a small lead, but he faded and Lefele didn't, as he took the final 5 rounds with ease to win the 9-6, 10-5 and 11-4 decision.

Lini Memani vs Phathutshedzo Nemukongwe - A very tactical bout that had both men have decent moments, but neither take control during the fight. I had Memani up 9-6 and the judges had it 7-6 Memani, 8-7 Nemukongwe, and 9-6 for Memani for the Split Decision win.

Tamsanqa Sogcwe vs Khulile Makeba - Sogcwe built up a solid lead then survived a knockdown in the 8th to score one of his own in the 11th enroute to the 9-6, 11-4 and 9-6 decision.

Paul Oulden vs Mawanda Sineko - A back and forth slugfest that saw Sineko have Oulden on the ropes throughout, but Oulden stormed back with 2 late knockdowns to take the 8-7 6-7 9-5 split decision.

South Africa - Strawweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Nkosinathi Joyi vs Paul Oulden - Oulden survived a 2nd round knockdown, but wasn't able to avoid Joyi's power throughout, taking shot after shot until the referee had seen enough in the 6th for the TKO.

Zolani Petelo vs Lindi Memani - Petelo went after Memani with controled fury throughout, landing seemingly at will at times then nearly closing his right eye by the 6th when the referee finally stepped in to stop the carnage for the TKO.

Sithembele Kibiti vs Tamsanqa Sogcwe - Kibiti built up a solid lead then survived a flash knockdown in the 8th to score ones of his own in the 11th, 12th and 13th before the ring doctor ordered the fight stopped due to a nasty gash on the nose of Sogcwe.

Zukisani Kwayiba vs Tshepo Lefele - A blistering pace by both men saw Lefele's left eye near closed, and Kwayiba suffering from a gash on his nose. The 10th round was one for the ages as both men tore at each other with unbridled savagery! In the 11th, the gash on Kwayiba's nose widened to the point that the fight was halted for the TKO. Afterwards the crowd cheered as both men hugged at center ring in a fine display of sportsmanship.

South Korea - Jr. Middleweights

We have 3 fighters in this division which gives top seeded Ki-Soo Kim the bye.

Semi-Final:

Jae-Do Yuh vs Jae-Hyung Yuh - This was an entertaining bout after 2 slow rounds as Jae-Do Yuh knocked Jae-Hyung Yuh down in the 3rd only to have Jae-Hyung Yuh return the favor in the 4th. The same pattern happened in the 8th as Jae-Do Yuh scored his 2nd knockdown only to have Jae-Hyung Yuh score the KO in the 9th!

Final:

Ki-Soo Kim vs Jae-Hyung Yuh - This was an old fashioned mugging as Kim dominated throughout, wearing Yuh down, nearly closing both of his eyes, opening a cut under the left eye then scoring a knockdown in the 10th before scoring the KO in the 11th to win the World Tournament berth with a 1-0-0 (1) record.
