![]() AUGUST 8, 2017 Idols Lose Summers Pitcher done for season as L.A. chases Arizona LOS ANGELES -- Already down a starter with Ricky Nolasco on the shelf, the defending champion Los Angeles Idols suffered another blow today when Ed Summers was shut down with a torn elbow ligament that will require surgery. The 27-year-old righty hasn't pitched to his 18-win form of last season, but still was a vital cog in the L.A. rotation. This season, Summers went 11-11 with a 4.79 ERA, a number blow up by a recent 10-start stretch in which he posted a 6.45 ERA. The Idols signed free agent Dave Freisleben, let go by Orlando earlier this season despite going 3-0 for them with a 1.52 ERA in three starts, a move that confused many. Freisleben won't have to be brilliant, just steady. Los Angeles boasts the league's best offense and a strong bullpen of Tom Niedenfeur, Jonathan Papelbon, Billy McCool and Brian Fuentes, that has posted a 3.08 collective ERA this season, 2nd best in the Southern League. Los Angeles currently trails the division-leading Arizona Sandmen by 4 games. The teams meet for a three-game set this weekend in Phoenix. Freisleben is slated to start Friday night. Ed Summers |

![]() AUGUST 16, 2017 Lincecum gets 2,000 Strummers' star notches 2,000th career strikeout SACRAMENTO -- They said he wouldn't last. At 5'10", 148 pounds and with an unorthodox delivery, critics of Tim Lincecum said the star righthander would break down at some point. Too much torque on that frame. And here he sits, in his ninth season since being taken in the inaugural draft. He has never been on the disabled list, making more than 32 starts each season, and topping 200 innings each season as well. And tonight, he reached a mark only Wichita's Rube Waddell reached before him. With one out in the fifth inning of a game Memphis would ultimately lose 3-2, Lincecum struck out Don Buford on a knee-buckling curveball to pick up the 2,000th strikeout of his career. "It seems a lot of these marks me and others have reached this season have come in losses," Lincecum noted wryly after the game. "I'm proud of what I've done, but we're not where we want to be be as a team, and that's what matters." Lincecum fell to 10-10 with a 3.19 ERA for Memphis, which is in last place in the Southern League East, 14 games out. Tim Lincecum |

![]() AUGUST 26, 2017 Hines' Streak Ended Charlotte slugger's hitting streak ends at 28 CHARLOTTE -- What's been an incredible second half for Cougars leftfielder Paul Hines culminated in a hitting streak that approached the PBL record of 33, held by Louisville's Richie Ashburn. And it was Ashburn who watched from the visitors dugout as Hines' streak ended at 28 games, the fourth longest in history. Louisville topped Charlotte 6-3, and Paul Hines went 0-for-4, the last coming on an error from Jim Lefebvre. The error was obvious, and nobody disputed it after the game, least of all Hines. "Jim makes that play 99 out of 100 times," Hines said. "I didn't get it done today. Simple as that." Since July 1, Hines has hit .341 with 19 homers and 47 RBI. Charlotte has gone 28-20 over that stretch, but remains 17 games behind runaway leader Louisville. ![]() Paul Hines |

![]() AUGUST 28, 2017 Anson Gets 1,500 Orlando first baseman joins 1,500-hit club SAN ANTONIO -- Orlando Orcas first baseman Cap Anson became the sixth player in Pastime Baseball League history to amass 1,500 hits in his career tonight, stroking a 7th inning single off San Antonio's Pete Falcone in an eventual 12-7 Orlando victory. The career .301 hitter, 32 years old, has seen his power numbers decline a bit in recent years but remains a steady offensive force. The six-time All-Star started off slowly, but has hit .307 over his last 51 games. With his team 12-games out, Anson is just hoping to lay the groundwork for a team of youngsters including Jimmy Wynn, Chino Smith, Jerry Remy and Leon Durham, to progress in the coming years and get back to playoff contention. "I've seen a lot in this game," Anson said. "There's plenty left for me, but I need to share what I know, too." "Cap's been a great help," said teammate Rocco Baldelli, who has had the best two seasons of his career since coming to Orlando before last season. "He's an absolute pro." Cap Anson |

Small switch, as instead of starting the day-to-day pennant race coverage on Sept. 1 I'm going to do it from Sept. 15. A couple more news tidbits first, though.

![]() SEPT. 4, 2017 Idols Lose Easter L.A. takes second hit in three days LOS ANGELES -- Catching the St. Louis Tides is going to be that much tougher for the defending champions. Luke Easter pulled up lame running to first last night against San Antonio in the Idols' 11-4 win. He needed to be helped into the locker room and has been diagnosed with a pulled hamstring. It sounds likely the team will place him on the disabled list. The news of Easter's injury comes two days after Dave Freisleben was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff that ended his season. Freisleben, picked up off the scrap heap after his inexplicable release by Orlando, went 3-0 with a 2.94 ERA in five starts with Los Angeles after being signed once Ed Summers was lost for the season to elbow surgery. Now it seems Freisleben could be out even longer than Summers. Mike Witt, taken in the first round of the November draft, will get first crack at the rotation spot. The loss of Easter, batting .315 with 17 homers and 77 RBIs, means Hardy Richardson will likely move to shortstop and Bill Monroe - acquired in the Ervin Santana trade last offseason - will get time at second base. Easter converted from first base when the Idols signed Dan Brouthers three years ago, and has become adequate at the position. It's been mentioned that Eddie Murray, who continues to hit in part-time duty, be given a chance to make the same conversion. But to do so in a pennant race seems too risky a move for the Idols to consider. Murray is batting .316 with 6 homers and 32 RBI in 177 at bats The Idols trail first-place St. Louis by four games in the Southern League West division. The teams meet in Los Angeles for a three-game series next weekend for their final head-to-head meeting of the season. Luke Easter |

![]() SEPT. 10, 2017 Injuries Toy With Pennant Races Sandmen lose Thompson, Tides lose Speaker You never like seeing injuries affect pennant races, but that's exactly what's happening in the Southern League. Days after Los Angeles suffered losses of Luke Easter and Dave Freisleben, the division leaders suffered losses of their own. The Arizona Sandmen suffered a difficult loss, as slugger Sam Thompson is done for the season after breaking his hand crashing into the wall against New Orleans. "I just can't believe it's happened again," said Thompson, who missed the 2015 postseason when he suffered an oblique strain on the next to last day of the season. "I've won three rings," Thompson said of his time with the New Orleans Knights. "But I want one here. And now I can't contribute." Arizona's up three games in the West over Los Angeles. Meanwhile, in the East, the division-leading St. Louis Tides lost star centerfielder Tris Speaker to elbow tendinitis. "He's trying to play through it," manager Harry Wright said. "But it's gotten so bad he can't even really swing the bat. We just need to hope we can hold on and that he can return for the playoffs." Speaker fought the decision, but ultimately had no choice. Rookie Luis Salazar will play in Speaker's absence, taking left field while Duke Snider moves to center. Tris Speaker Sam Thompson |

Chicago 4, Milwaukee 0: Ben Sanders hurled a complete game 3-hit shutout, striking out 7 for his 12th win, and Chicago got a 2-run single from Buck O'Neil that would prove all the offense they needed. Sacramento 11, Wichita 4: The Stingers blew it open with a 4-run seventh off loser CC Sabathia and reliever Frank Killen to cut Milwaukee's lead in the division down to 1 game. George Shuba hit his 10th homer of the season and Sid Gordon hit his 8th, as both men drove in three runs in the win. Southern League East
Orlando 13, St. Louis 11: Sam Crawford had four hits, including a grand slam in an 8-run second inning, as Orlando tries to play spoiler. The Tides rallied with a 7-run 7th inning and Hank Blalock hit two homers, but St. Louis couldn't make it all the way back. Tides starter Frank Smith fell to 1-5 with a 10.52 ERA in six starts since returning from elbow surgery. Alex Johnson went 4-for-4 for Alabama in the loss. Southern League West
Arizona 11, Los Angeles 5: No Sam Thompson? No problem. The Sandmen mashed 16 hits, including four from Larry Gardner and three from John McGraw as the Airmen ensured the Idols will end this series behind them in the standings. Justin Verlander won his 15th for Arizona. |

![]() PENNANT RACE REPORT Sept. 17, 2017 Northern League East
Louisville 6, Boston 2: The Racers clinch the division with the win, led by three RBIs from Richie Ashburn. The celebration was marred, however, when starter Ervin Santana left the game with a shoulder injury in the fourth. He'll be shut down for the rest of the regular season, but the playoffs are questionable. Northern League West
Chicago 6, Milwaukee 2: An Al Rosen error in the first inning opens the floodgates for five unearned runs and Bob Caruthers threw a complete game as Chicago gets to within a game of the division lead. Wichita 8, Sacramento 1: Jay Hughes threw a complete game and the Brigade knocked around three-time Outstanding Pitcher and 17-game winner Bob Veale, costing Sacramento its chance to tie for the division lead. Southern League East
St. Louis 8, Orlando 2: Virgil Trucks won his 17th with 8 strong innings and Rusty Staub and Doggie Miller each homered for St. Louis. Alabama 2, New Orleans 0: A pitcher's duel broken up by a fifth-inning rain delay didn't stop Johnny Schmitz, who resumed pitching after the break and threw 7 1/3 innings of 2-hit ball backed by 7th inning RBI singles from Gabe Gross and Ed Konetchy. Southern League West
Los Angeles 10, Arizona 2: Dan Brouthers slammed two homers and Dave Winfield added another as the Idols roughed up Satchel Paige with a 7-run fourth inning. John Clarkson won his 16th. |

![]() PENNANT RACE REPORT Sept. 18, 2017 Northern League West
Chicago 5, Milwaukee 4: Seven shutout innings from Smoky Joe Williams fell apart when Chicago put up a 5-run 8th inning sparked by Biz Mackey's 2-run double to take the lead and a share of first place. Wichita 4, Sacramento 3: George Stone and Hub Collins each homered for Wichita against Rube Marquard as Wichita took 2-of-3 in the role of spoiler. Southern League East
Orlando 11, St. Louis 5: Cap Anson homered and drove in 5 runs for Orlando as Denny McLain won his 10th, putting it together after a 4-run second for the Tides. It was the reverse for Tommy Bond, who was sharp for four before allowing 5 runs in the fifth and 3 in the sixth. Ted Easterly had four hits and 3 RBI for Orlando. New Orleans 6, Alabama 3: Mark Prior won his 15th, getting homers from Chad Tracy and Norm Miller. Dan Haren took the loss for Alabama, falling to 16-10. Southern League West

![]() PENNANT RACE REPORT Sept. 19, 2017 Northern League West
Milwaukee 2, Charlotte 1: John Montefusco won his 18th for Milwaukee, as Jake Peavy made one mistake for Charlotte, allowing Tank Carr's 20th homer of the season - a 2-run blast in the sixth. Philadelphia 3, Chicago 2 (11 innings): John Beckwith's 2-out single off Rudy May broke a 2-2 tie, scoring Jim Ray Hart. Chicago's Len Barker and Philadelphia's Carlos Marmol locked up in a good pitcher's duel, though neither figured in the decision. Louisville 9, Sacramento 0: Joe Jackson racked up four more hits and Smoky Burgess and Jim Rice each homered as Louisville pounded Eppa Rixey, while Mickey Harris picked up his 20th win, allowing 2 hits over 8 1/3 innings. Southern League East
Arizona 6, St. Louis 5: In a possible postseason preview, the division leaders battled as Arizona's Dutch Leonard picked up his 23rd win of the season despite not being sharp. But the Sandmen spotted Leonard a 3-0 and 6-2 leads against 17-game winner Bronson Arroyo, and Dan Uggla's 3-run shot in the 9th wasn't enough. Oklahoma City 11, New Orleans 5: Dontrelle Willis' pursuit of career win 150 met a surprising roadblock, as last place Oklahoma City pasted the lefty 7 runs on 8 hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Fred Dunlap capped it with a grand slam in the 9th off Dick Rudolph. Alabama 10, Las Vegas 2: Dick Ruthven threw a complete game, striking out 7, and Buck Weaver had three hits and drove in 5 as the Airmen picked up much needed ground as they cling to faint playoff hopes. Southern League West
Los Angeles 5, Memphis 3: While Arizona was knocking off St. Louis, the Idols tried to keep pace and succeeded, getting homers from Dan Brouthers, Dave Winfield and Hank Thompson to back rookie starter Mike Witt. |

Las Vegas 5, Alabama 4 (13 innings): Alabama chipped away after the Bosses' 4-run second inning, tying it in the bottom of the ninth only to lose it in 13 when Bernie Allen singled to bring home Tom Daly. Yeah, this is a good one. Three-way tie for first with 10 games left and no wild card.
Couple of good subplots down the stretch here, too. Dan Brouthers pursuing the triple crown, Tim Raines pursuing the hitting streak record, Dontrelle Willis trying to become the second pitcher to 150 wins, and Arizona and St. Louis trying to hold on despite losing Sam Thompson and Tris Speaker, respectively. |

![]() Triple Crown Chase With 10 games remaining, Los Angeles' Dan Brouthers has the chance to add another note to a brilliant career, as he is within striking distance of becoming the first Triple Crown winner in Pastime Baseball League history. Brouthers currently leads the Southern League with 32 homers and 113 runs batted in. He's batting .332, a point behind St. Louis' Rusty Staub and two points behind Alabama's Buddy Kerr. Chino Smith of Alabama looms behind at .329. Willie Stargell of Memphis is one homer behind with 31, while Staub trails in RBI by 2. But Staub's numbers may be locked in, as he's been sidelined with an abdominal strain. If Brouthers has a good final week, he could add a new entry to a full slate of career accomplishments. |
