How does this game get good ratings ???

I bet the people who give this game good ratings dont play it long enough...

So many things are done outside the game because of the games limitations and dont follow mlb rules from what I am told... Free Agents A/B, Waivers, etc...

So many leagues have to eliminated stuff so the files dont get so big so you cant go back in most histories for records... And Joe Unknown holds alot of records ??? Some players have been deleted so records are NEVER accurate...

All the leagues I have been in or are in have lost data moving to newer versions...

And yes I am frustrated at this time cause in one league I got no news/notice of free agent minor league players and lost 30+ players and some players who were going to be starters in my upcoming season...

The New York Mets were similarly upset when they lost Tom Seaver to the White Sox......

To have others hold your hand through the season and make sure all your i's are dotted and all your t's are crossed would not be much fun. You might as well just let the game play itself......

Played it for over two hundred simulated years with no issues. Is that long enough?

Been playing every inning of every game from version 4 to 11. Never lost any data moving my game from v4 to v6.5. I have never lost data moving my game from v2006 to v11.

Did kind of lose data going from v6.5 to v 2006 due to the total rewrite of the game which is understandable. By "kind of" I still have the data from 6.5 and before in almanacs I just can't access it from the newer rewritten versions.

Keep in mind with the rewrite of 2006 it was never a certain thing that the older version files would even import into the new version. Markus however was able to get it to work and still bring most of the relevant data with it.

It gets such good ratings because as far as player creation, development, aging, realistic stats, etc it is on par with FM as one of the two best sports sims on the market, simple as that.

it's the gms job to pay attention to expiring contacts at the end of the season, I barely even use the "messages" feature of the game

I'm still running a universe that has its roots in an OOTP2 league, in 2000. Never had any major issues moving between versions/years.

I created my first league in OOTP 5 and upgraded it all the way up to OOTP 2007 without issue (even using Anderson's utility to bridge the OOTP 6.5-OOTP 2006 gap for player history data).

My current solo league was started in OOTP 2007 three years ago and has been upgraded all the way up to OOTP 11 also without any issues.

I always make backups before doing upgrades and sometimes have to go back and tweak some values and settings to assure a smooth transition. But so far so good for me.

Been playing several hundred hours per year since 2004 or so (so I don't know if that's long enough for you).

The game gets good ratings because it's a lot of fun to play. You may find that to be an overly-simple explanation, but it's the truth.

What he said.

I have found and continue to find OOTP to be the best entertainment expenditure I have ever made. Better than FM, even.

So, you don't like the game, but you have been in 12 online leagues? Now that's funny.

Partly that, and partly because of the fact that other, more mass marketed, baseball sims (I'm looking at 2k's management sim mainly) are worse at the things mentioned.

I suppose if you're grading on a curve, then it would get high ratings. As far as I'm concerned, OOTP sets the curve. Despite its flaws, it is still better than anything out there.

Why does the game get good ratings:
1) Ironically one of the reasons would be BECAUSE of all of the depth and number of items you can control.
2) Game designers/creators and community that is alive. I keep going and looking at other similar games and do not see the kind of activity, and shall I say - effort? - put into the game by everyone. Feedback is welcome by the designers, changes are always made to improve the game, the game is left open for the fans to participate in modifying, fan involvement and activity is top notch.
3) In what I have looked for in a game, it has everything any other game could offer. (And for me, it is the only one that I know of at this time that you can set up virtually anything historically that you wish).

I can't comment on the file size 'problem' you mention since I do not zip through sims for 100 years at a time. But if I was going to do any long term stuff, I know I would either expect huge file sizes and the problems those could cause or as would be my case, I would simply change the settings so I don't have all the extraneous stats.

If I don't want to be bothered by features of the game, I turn them off. Yes, I like having minor leagues but not a bunch of them, so my current league I reduced them down to a manageable level. If I am not going to keep an eye on Free Agents and review reports, I will turn off the free agent option. I don't want to deal with hiring scouts and coaches and worrying about their quality so I turn them off.

It's great having so many features and even greater that I have control over them.
