The biggest difference is Morgan if he continues his lack of effort will be out of the league in 2 years. Hanley is one of the best players in the league and needs to be a leader on that team. The best teams have solid leadership(Yankees, Twins, Cardinals, Red Sox, DRays) and it is a result of leadership at the top with their best players and respect for the manager. Do you think Cameron Maybin might think well since I am going to be good as well I may start taking it easy like the star player does?

I really didn't think that the situation was a big deal, and thought it was just ESPN being ESPN and blowing the whole thing way out of proportion, but when I saw the play, I lost a lot of respect for Hanley and agree that his lack of hustle, as well as his attack of Fredi Gonzalez, was despicable.

The 2nd example must be Bobby Knight. Is the first example Terry Francona?
And Im only half kidding. Part of being a great manager is being able to motivate certain personalities. You may run through a brick wall for the manager that says have a seat we have your back while a more dominant personality will see that as weakness and take advantage of what he sees as weakness. Compare what he said to what Hanley said, and the difference to me is the attitude. Edit - And I definitely agree about the approach, and would respond more favorably to the first. But judging by the reactions from his teammates it sounds like it was more of #1 than #2. Last edited by NYY #23; 05-22-2010 at 01:05 AM. |

Good point. Dogging it, gets you pulled out of one game. Complaining about being pulled out for dogging it, gets you talked about negatively on a baseball board for 3 pages.

So, I will give Hanley credit for this. Did anyone see the play he made in last night's game vs. the Phillies? Above and beyond the call of his fielding duties I'd say

You are 100% right. There is no possible way that he will ever change. Once a thug, always a thug. He should have been put out of baseball forever. He will never be a productive teammate or player.

I saw it, was surprised, and made a mental note of it for the next time he loafs.
