Basic modding question

New to modding, I have a reall basic question. I have read the manual on modding and am unclear about a procedural concept.

I want to create a fictional league that would involve changes to nations, cities, injuries and names. All of these changes are to be made out of game, not with any in-game editors.

Let's say I:

1) back up original .txt files
2) insert corresponding modified .txt files
3) create league, save league
4) re-install original .txt files

If I do this, would the league file that is created retain the modifications even though the default .txt files have been re-installed to their original locations? Or do the modified files need to stay in order for those changes to be reflected in-game?

Jeez, I hope that makes sense.

Well, the game basically takes your .txt files and creates .dat files. It draws it's information from those .dat files. If you play your league with the modified .dat files (from your modified .txt files), the game will continue to use your modifications. You can modify and re-import the names and injury .txt files and the game will reflect those changes.
I usually just rename the original .txt files that I modify...I don't bother "reinstalling" them.

Hope some of that makes sense.

Yes, thanks. I'm pretty sure I get it, and I'll give it a go.

I followed this hands-on precisely:

OOTP Baseball Manual - Hands-on: Nations

And my nations.txt now is saved with the line
229,Markusonia,Markusonia,MKS,Markusonian,5,5,7,60 ,0,40,,,,
at the end, just as the hands-on tell you.

Yet when I reboot OOTP 11, create a new custom game, that new nation does not appear in any nation drop-down.

What am I missing?

Do you have any cities for the new nation? Gotta have a city (or three).

Thanks, but its still not working and this is driving me crazy.

Currently my nations.txt includes just these two lines:

Quote:
1,Abdubia,Abdubia,ABD,Abdubian,5,5,7,60,0,40,,,,
2,Markusonia,Markusonia,MKS,Markusonian,5,5,7,60,0 ,40,,,,
My cities.txt includes these only these four lines:

Quote:
Markusonia,5000000,2,Markusonia,-16.26,156.47
Throon,4000000,2,Markusonia,-16.33,166.49
Abdubia,5000000,1,Abdubia,177.00,-17.33
Quell,20000,1,Abdubia,170.44,-15.00
Both are stored in My Documents\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 11\database

I boot up OOTP11, chose New Custom Game, then Add Fictional League. Under League Nation drop down there are NO choices. Its completely blank:

What am I doing wrong?
Attached Files
File Type: txt nations.txt (109 Bytes, 126 views)
File Type: txt cities.txt (166 Bytes, 127 views)

A line in the nations file needs to read like this:

Code:

1,Afghanistan,Afghanistan,AFG,Afghan,2,0,17,100,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,180,0,820,0
There aren't enough fields in your file - its possible that the mod manual is a little out of date?

Anyhow, your countries should read:

Code:

1,Abdubia,Abdubia,ABD,Abdubian,5,5,7,60,0,40,0,0,0,0,200,200,200,200,200
2,Markusonia,Markusonia,MKS,Markusonian,5,5,7,60,0,40,0,0,0,0,200,200,200,200,200
The 200s are the values for facegen ethnicity (add up to 1000), but as far as I'm aware the ethnicities.txt percentages overrides them based on which namesets your nations are using.

Your nations file only has 15 fields. There should be 20. You need to add the commas or enter the values you want for all 20 fields. Otherwise, my experience is that the record is not saved, so in essence you have not nations.

*****OK I guess we have this covered.

Thanks Ray and others for the quick reply. Obviously that's the issue. So yes, I just spent the last day pulling my hair out because I was following this page of the on-line manual, and that page specifies 15 fields per line.

Silly me for reading the manual. Is there an up-to-date, user-made guide to basic modding?

I don't have access to the game at the moment, but I will try your revised nations.txt and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

ignore the manual when it comes to nations and cities - go based off of help u find on here.
thanx to the many responses i have had u should be able to find my threads fopr help on nations and cities.
For my EBL league i have been in the process of creating over 500 new cities and 11 nations.

Cities must be in alphabetical order. nations will be at the end and be numbered, 229, 230 etc

also they way i do mine is i match my cities up with a real city Endor City becomes Chicago so the line looks like this

Endor City,7841952,229,New Coruscant,41.84,-87.68

city, population, country ID, State/region, lat/long
what i am doing is creating all my cities in a separate .txt and cutting and pasting them in alpa order. i am also copying and pasting the orig city into my new.txt so i can change the names but keep the long/lat, pop.
i made Endor City bigger then Chicago.

p.s. from what i have done my new nations r all at the bottom which makes them become 229,230 etc i left the top alone mine are not 1, 2, 3 etc

also on my Cities or nations thread someone said they r creating an in game Cities Editor. and u can use the ingame Nations editor under explore world, but it doesnt save to teh nations.txt. nor dopes it let u create new cities.
